glad yall are enjoying Meemaw ^^
"Modesty" is the PR reason for wearing hijab. A lot of time it is just nonsense and untrue to many wearers. The true reason to wear a hijab is faith affirmation.
I am affirming myself that I am indeed a member of this faith and I would like to be seen as one. That's all to it.
I would not consider it immodest to not cover my hair the same way I would consider it immodest to wear a miniskirt. I wouldn't go outside without long loose opaque clothing but I don't find it scandalous to step outside for 5 seconds without a head scarf. But I understand that someone else might have a different mindset. It depends on the way we were raised, where we are in our journey in learning about Islam etc.
I myself wear it because I think I look prettier with it.
Having said all that, wdym by "PR reason"? It's all part of the modest clothing rule that Allah told believing men and women to follow.
The affirming part makes sense though. Allah told us to differentiate ourselves in appearance (for example, muslim men trimming their mustache but keeping the beard)
By "PR reason," I mean it's the explanation that's presented to the public. It's the first reason people give for wearing a hijab, even though we both know that's not true for many people. The way I see it, modesty in Islam is about a lot more than what you wear. It includes things like humility, self-restraint, avoidance of luxury and how you carry yourself.
That's why I'm not convinced that hijab is inherently a symbol of modesty. For a lot of people today, it seems to function more as an expression of faith and identity. Of course, some women wear it specifically for reasons of modesty, but I don't think clothing alone is a reliable measure of whether someone is modest.
What I'm trying to say in my first post is that faith and identity are much stronger reasons for keeping the practice of hijab than the usual argument about modesty. To me, modesty is about character, humility, and how you treat others, not a piece of clothing.
That's why I find the modesty argument unconvincing, especially when discussions about women's modesty often seem to matter far more to men than to the women actually wearing the hijab.
