Nephthys and Seth in those young lovely days
T E E N A G E G I R L S + M Y T H O L O G Y: Nephthys
Where do dead things go, she asks as a child, later to be answered with the chilling reply of: to you. Tears run from her lashes, their cause uncertain, a sombre ache to the way words fall from trembling lips. She lays awake all night, goes for walks that have no destination. No purpose. People stare when she wanders into school, clothes wet from wading through the river. Nobody questions it properly until girls start going missing, turning up on mossy banks, water lilies entangled in their hair.

The only time I've ever used the Face Book™️ was in 2010ish on my mom's account to play a game about building an aquarium but all my fish kept dying so I stopped
Nephthys: Guys, I'm sorry but I can no longer ignore my feelings. Nephthys: I think I'm in love with Set. Isis: Seriously? Nephthys: Yeah. Any thoughts? Osiris: Just prayers.

God of the Earth.
A Return to Quieter Days
“All right. Now, what else needed to be done again?” Nephthys wondered, having just finished cleaning a table. She started walking away from the dining room. One of the potted plants nearby caught her attention. “Oh right. The garden,” she said as she started walking towards the living room.
“Hey, what are you in such a hurry for?” Set asked. Nephthys stopped when she heard Set’s question. She turned to find him sitting on the sofa, a glass in one hand. Some fruit was sitting on the table in front of him.
“Set? What are you doing home so early? Don’t tell me you dumped all the work on the vizier again,” said Nephthys. She had heard from the citizens of Egypt how often her husband had shirked his duties as pharaoh to do whatever he wanted. It made her wonder why he even wanted the throne so badly if he insisted on behaving so unprofessionally. “You know you’re supposed to set an example for the people.”
As usual, he simply shrugged off her concerns and chuckled. “I’m sure he doesn’t mind a little extra work,” he said.
“That still doesn’t mean it’s okay to make him do all the work!”
Set frowned, “Give me a break, Neph. I took today off so I could be with you.” It has been a while since the last time we’d spent some time together, hasn’t it, Nephthys thought. So long, in fact, she couldn’t even remember.
“Here,” Set held up one of the glasses, “Come over here and have a drink with me.”
As tempting as it was to just sit and relax with him, there was something else bothering Nephthys at the moment. “Okay. But what about all those other times you had left work? Where were you back then?” Her tone of voice was far more suspicious and demanding than she had hoped.
Set glared at her. “Why are you acting like I never came back here before? And the few times you were around you brushed me off, talkin’ about how busy you were with chores or whatever. So I went somewhere else instead.” He’s right about that…
Nephthys looked away from her husband. The only other question she could think of asking him now was one that would lead to yet another huge argument between them. Their relationship was strained enough as is; the other gods - and even some of the humans - could tell.
While Nephthys was stuck in her thoughts, Set continued talking. “I’m not cheating on you if that’s what you’re thinking. You know I still love you, right?”
Even after all these years?
“Yes. I know that” she finally managed to say. But it didn’t matter how many times he’d said it. Nephthys still couldn’t help but wonder if Set was seeing someone else behind her back. That he had found someone who was more open and honest.
That he was getting back at me for what had happened between me and Osiris…
“Say it.”
“Huh?”
“I know you got somethin’ else you wanna say, so say it.”
The way Set was staring at her made Nephthys wish she could hide her true feelings from others. This wasn’t the path she had hoped their conversation would take - there was nothing more that could be said. Not without it ending in nothing but anger and pain and leaving each other alone again. So she stayed silent.
Set was the one to break the silence between them, “Neph? What-”
“I’m sorry.” She started walking towards him. I want us to go back…
“Sorry for what?” He moved over to make room for her.
“For bringing up old times. There’s no point in bringing up the past now, is there? What’s done is done,” Nephthys said, placing her hand on his.
“Besides,” she leaned into him, resting her head on his shoulder, “I miss days like this.” If only we could stay like this forever…
Set put his arm around her and smiled. “Yeah. Me too.”
A Familiar Scent
Nephthys closed her eyes as the familiar scent of sandalwood and rose drifted throughout the bedroom. It seemed like every day brought about a new event - whether it be some creature rampaging through a town, or a foreign god declaring New Kemet as their own. And this was on top of her usual duty of sailing through Duat with Ra and the others. Using incense helped put her at ease during rough times.
(She found herself using far more than usual these days, however. She was thankful her followers had given her so much.)
Nephthys looked out the window, seeing the pitch-black darkness of night barely illuminated by the moon. As much as she enjoyed the technology of modern life, she missed gazing at the stars - Sothis in particular. Maybe the city lights had something to do with the diminishing stars, she thought. The dull scenery made her drift off again, thoughts of both her old and new life swimming around in her mind.
She wondered who - or what it was that forced them to leave earth and move to this strange new territory, and why. What was their purpose? She desperately wanted to go back home but she knew whoever sent them here wouldn’t allow it. Though everything looked the same, it was nothing more than a pale imitation of the Kemet of olden days.
He’d love it here, much more than anybody else. Where are you now, Sutekh?
Nephthys’ eyes shot open. She turned to look at the incense stick burning nearby. Now she knew why this scent seemed so familiar; it reminded her of him. After he left, Nephthys decided to use this particular scent sparingly; no matter how much she loved it, this scent brought up too many memories. Memories of both pleasant times and times she wishes she could forget.
It was the last gift Seth had given her before they separated for good. He had always boasted about his creations before, but he seemed especially proud of this one - said it was “strong and sweet, just like us.” Or something like that. When asked why he gave her an incredulous look and stated how obvious the answer to her question was (He was never good at explaining things.) But the more she thought about it, the clearer his words became to her.
The scent, as far as Nephthys could tell, was a combination of rose, oud, jasmine, and sandalwood. She remembered how it overwhelmed her the first time she used it. (Seth, on the other hand, loved it and was surprised when Nephthys expressed her distaste for it.) But it gradually softened as time went on, developing into a warm, earthy scent, with the flowers settling neatly into the background. Perhaps that’s what he meant when he said that.
As much as she loved that memory, Nephthys felt a sudden wave of sadness wash over her once she realized she had gone back on her word of not using this particular scent so much. She had been using it more than anything else ever since she and her comrades left earth.
She realized she had lit the last one.
