Orange: 6 facts about my home town

Well, I may not be in the same city anymore (let alone the same state), but you know what they say - you can take the girl out of Chicago, but you can’t take Chicago out of the girl.

1) Opinion, not fact, but the point remains that Chicago has the best damn food anywhere. Tell me you can find pizza or fried chicken or beef sandwiches or hot dogs from anywhere else that are better, and I get to call you a liar.

2) While there’s some dispute as to the Windy City moniker either discussing actual wind or if it’s referencing our traditionally long-winded politicians, there’s something to be said for the wind tunnels that happen downtown, doubly so if there’s a rainstorm going on at the same time. Travelers beware, your umbrellas will be forfeit to the rage of Chicago’s storms.

3) While most people will hear LSD and think of the drug, most Chicagoans will hear LSD and wonder why the hell you’re on Lake Shore Drive.

4) Corporate buy-outs will change the landscape of any city, but it’s still Sears Tower, Comiskey Park, and Marshall Field’s to us, just to name a few places that money tried to change the name to and succeeded only so far as what name gets put in the papers.

5) While I could talk about how the city wasn’t the best place to grow up in, doubly so for having grown up in territory disputed over by two (or three, I don’t remember) rival gangs, it’s nothing short of amazing if you’re coming in as a tourist. With a wealth of museums, cultural areas, and historical landmarks (including the handful of buildings that survived the Great Chicago Fire), you’re damn near guaranteed to need at least a week there just to talk a portion of it all in.

6) Just because you live on the North or South Sides of Chicago doesn’t mean you can only root for one baseball team, or that your loyalty has to lie with either the South Side team (the White Sox) or the North Side team (the Cubs). Case in point: I was born and raised on the South Side, as was my grandfather, and we were both staunchly loyal Cubbie fans despite the protests and anti-Cub sentiment of our White Sox-loyal family members. I just wonder how things are going to change now that the Cubs won the World Series last year...
