📝 Guide: The Magic of the Desktop.ini File — Making Beautiful Folders for CC

When @leebbi04 and I started putting together themed mod packs, we immediately ran into a question: how to make everything look beautiful, so the folders wouldn’t feel like a gray heap of files but like an actual collection. The picture in our heads was gorgeous, but there was simply no clear guide online. I had to dig around, test settings, and experiment for a long time.

Now I want to share what I’ve learned, so you don’t have to waste time and nerves.

What is Desktop.ini and why do you need it?

Desktop.ini - a hidden system configuration file that Windows uses to change the appearance of folders. It’s what can "order" a folder to display a custom picture instead of a plain yellow icon, and to show a pop-up tooltip when you hover over it. All this visual goodness in Windows 10 and 11 relies on this tiny text file.

Step 1: How to see the invisible

By default, the system hides these files. To reveal them (relevant for both Windows 10 and Windows 11):

Open your folder

In the top menu, click View → Show and check "Hidden items".

From the same menu, open Options, go to the "View" tab and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)".

Now, inside folders with custom settings you’ll see a semi-transparent desktop.ini.

Step 2: Anatomy of Desktop.ini using my example

Here are the contents of the file from our "Winter" folder:

[.ShellClassInfo] InfoTip=Winter mods that bring frost and cold to the kingdom. IconResource=icon_snowflake.ico,0 Flags=0 [ViewState] Mode= Vid= FolderType=Documents

Let me break down each line:

[.ShellClassInfo] — the main section responsible for customizing the folder.

InfoTip=... — the tooltip text that appears when you hover the cursor over the folder. I write a short description of the contents here.  Important: to make sure Cyrillic text doesn’t turn into gibberish, the file needs to be saved in ANSI encoding. For other languages you might need Unicode, but for Cyrillic — ANSI only.

IconResource=icon_snowflake.ico,0 — specifies which file to use as the folder icon. In my case it’s icon_snowflake.ico, and the 0 after the comma means the first icon inside the file. A .png file can also be used. The icon file must be placed inside that same folder.

Logo=... — if this line is absent, Windows tries to build a folder preview by itself. But you can explicitly specify, for example, Logo=folder.png, so that Explorer knows exactly which image to show in the thumbnail preview. I sometimes add this when the automatic thumbnail doesn’t appear.

Flags=0 — a service parameter, you can leave it untouched.

[ViewState] — a section where the system stores the folder’s view template (e.g., "Large icons" or "Details"). You can safely delete this entire section along with the Mode=, Vid=, and FolderType=... lines if you only want to keep the custom icon and tooltip.

Step 3: How not to break the beauty when sharing

And here’s the most crucial part — the one that stands between you and a beautiful folder. If you simply click “Send to ZIP” or pack the folder with any archiver using default settings, all the desktop.ini magic will be ruined. The person on the other end won’t see your custom icons or tooltips — only plain yellow folders. !!!To keep the beauty intact, I only archive my packs with WinRAR using the RAR format and specific extra settings.

Here’s exactly how to do it:

Right-click the folder → “Add to archive...”

Set the archive format to RAR 

Go to the “Advanced” tab.

In the “NTFS” section, I check three boxes:

“Save file streams”

“Save symbolic links as links”

“Save hard links as links”

These settings preserve hidden and system files along with their attributes, so the desktop.ini stays intact and doesn’t get lost when unpacked. After this kind of archiving, anyone who opens the folder will see everything exactly the way I intended.

It may sound a little complicated, but in practice it’s really easy and quick. The best part: this method isn’t tied to any specific game — it’s universal. Anyone can make beautiful folders with custom icons and tooltips, for any purpose, because it’s all just built‑in Windows system settings.

PSA for Windhawk users 🖥️⚠️

I couldn't figure out why Sims 3 and Sims Medieval kept crashing randomly. Turns out, Windhawk was the culprit.

Here's a crash log from my game:

ACCESS_VIOLATION writing address 0x00000000 Module: MSVCR80.dll Loaded module: windhawk.dll

Windhawk injects into running processes to modify Windows behaviour. For some reason, this conflicts with older games like Sims 3 and Medieval, causing them to crash on memory access.

Once I removed Windhawk, the crashes stopped completely.

So if you're using Windhawk and experiencing random crashes – try uninstalling it. It might just save your game.

A long post about Castaway stories

I wanted to play Sims the other day, but I'm already tired of the usual Sims, like the Sims Medieval. And I remembered the existence of Sims Stories.

This game turned out to be so pleasant and bright for a cold and cloudy winter! It's so warm!

But in order to play it fully, like in Sims 2, you need to set it up first. And it's not that everything is difficult, but I suffered.

1.To begin with, as in the case of Sims 2 - Graphic Rules Maker

In the drop-down menu, select Castaway or find it manually.

In general, the setup is similar to Sims 2 and there are many guides on this topic, but I want to clarify that if you are going to use the reshade, then you need to check the box next to the "Disable Dirty Rectangle".

2.Then, as in the case of Sims 2, you need to patch the game to avoid crashes.

3.I haven't checked if the RPC launcher works for this part. But if you don't have it, then here are the instructions for installing the ReShade.

4.Next, install mods and cc.

Just like in Sims 2, create a "Downloads" folder in the documents.

And don't be like me - don't forget to enable this option. I've broken my whole head why only floors and CAS items work, but buy mode and hacks don't…

On the MTS website, it is recommended not to install mods until you complete the main plot, otherwise it may break. I haven't experimented with this, but cc for CAS and for buy mode don't break the game.

5. My must have list of mods:

1)Garden Crop and Ultimate Fruit Collection - An absolute musthave, because in any survival there should be gardening as a constant source of food. I moved all the plants to the "general" section in the simpe, which corresponds to the "Nature" section. Otherwise, they will simply have nowhere to appear.

2) Woodworking bench - That was the first thing I thought about when I started playing this game. It works great, but! Do not try to make a guitar, a violin and a shelf, otherwise the table will freeze. I cut out all these functions from my desk and put it in the "Survival" section (corresponds to the "Sitting-rest" section), which I advise you, otherwise it will appear in the mirrors by default.

3)A workaround for the broken MoveObjects cheat - Required for the previous mod.

I am still actively playing this game and sometimes I correct/add to the list. Everything in it is used in my game together, there are no conflicts.

Be careful with the mods for autonomy! Many of them disable the entire autonomy of the game

I was really long looking for such a thing that would remove this ugly snow-white foam when brushing teeth. But I didn't find anything. 

I decided to remove it myself and immediately realized why no one had done it yet. The foam file is responsible not only for brushing teeth, but also for the foam bath. Removing it - bubbles come out of the bath, but there is no foam itself.

I played with this file, trying to change the color, replace the foam with a single bubble, but it all looked terrible. As a result, I made three versions with different transparency of this foam.

My husband liked the option with 20% the most. At a distance, the foam is not visible at all, but at an approximation it looks like small splashes of paste.

The version with 50% percent is not much different from the original, but the foam when brushing your teeth ceases to look like a piece of paper and becomes softer.

In the version with the effect completely turned off, the foam in the bathroom also disappears, only single bubbles come out of it.

This list has been created for years. It is sharpened for realism, smoothness of the game.

All these mods can be used together, they are tested for compatibility both through the panel and in the game.

I have all the add-ons, catalogs and the store.

Some of the mods need to be configured (Passion, system core, BGLMFT)

No need to blindly download everything, at least briefly read the descriptions of mods and their possible errors, as well as the settings

Make sure you have completed all these steps for a smooth game

My computer is average.

There are no visual fixes and default replacements in this list, otherwise the list would have doubled.

SimsAsylum is not broken, registration is needed 

If your computer still doesn't pull - look at the mods in the Misc category - there are the heaviest script mods

If in addition to this list you use other mods- do not forget to check for compatibility, version, put it in other folders other than the list, so that if anything, you can quickly figure out what the problem is.

After massive downloads, installations and file transfers - do a system cleanup. This greatly affects the loading time of the game.

Abandoned Town

A tiniest map. 

Once this island was planned to be built up with resort areas, but funding stopped, construction sites were abandoned and now only builders who were left without work and criminals hiding from the law live here.

Of the rabbit holes, only the Base of criminals and the mausoleum. There is a library (gas station), an old church, a "gym"...

Since there are no shops, you need to grow and catch products, fortunately there is an opportunity for this :)

There are 2 starter houses or a tiny empty plot for you to choose from. The city is inhabited.

It is ideal to buy everything, renovate and create a little paradise :)

The colony on the planet r256613

A tiny colony on the tiniest map 😊

If you are wondering what a miracle of nature is, then this is the highest point on the water planet. The highest point at which a meteorite impact created a crater 😅

There are 11 public lots and 4 residential. 

Since it is important to produce healthy offspring in the colony, the emphasis is on health. There is a hospital and a scientific institute in order to detect diseases in time. A huge "Health Center", which has a swimming pool, gym and examination rooms. All residents need to undergo regular medical examinations.

Since plants cannot survive in the local climate, they are grown artificially under domes and in buildings. The more plants in your house, the richer you are :)

In the huge central park under the dome you can find edible vegetables and fruits, butterflies and small animals. There is also a plot with a large greenhouse where you can find even more edible crops.

There are also all kinds of shops, a 3-in-1 town hall, a cinema, a school. Library, cemetery and fishing spot.

Inhabited by 2 families :)

Kelava Town

I created this world a few years ago. I had a very weak computer, but I wanted to play all the add-ons. My goal was to create a world, without using cc materials and mods, on a small map, trying to fit everything that could fit. And Kelava was born.

There is almost everything here. A few starter homes and empty lots. Beaches, clubs and bars, parks and squares. There is a houseboat and an immersion zone adapted to all skill levels. Metro system and food truck platforms. All the buildings necessary for life, like a fire station and a laundry.

The city is inhabited by several families. There are children and old people and lonely characters.

But if you are waiting for an exciting story or beautiful mountain scenery - you are not here. His dignity is not in this. Its loading takes about 1-2 minutes, instant saves, long-worked routing. It is practical, fast and stable.

Some problems:

Due to the size and fullness of the lots, wild horses will tend to get stuck all the time. It is better to disable them in the settings.

Because of the size, the largest free lots are 30x40. There are no 64x64 lots at all.
