Throughout its dynamic history, indie pop (of the indie pop tied to Postcard, Sarah, Early Creation, etc.) has often crossed over into the realm of electronic music. Notable examples of this include The Field Mice, Even As We Speak, The Wake, Primal Scream, among countless others. I must admit that the first few times I heard my twee pop heroes venture into such territory, I was a bit turned off. I was closed minded and felt that everything just boiled down to mundane radio techno (though I must admit I’ve always had a soft spot for eurodance as a genre). However, over time I grew to enjoy these brilliant artistic efforts and began to understand the depth that electronic music can provide.
As far as the content and theme of the song, I was half envisioning the feelings one might have surrounding a school dance. While I’ve never been much of a casanova at any point in my existence, I still found myself overcome with nerves in any sort of social affair that involved any emotional undertones. The flashing lights, the loud music, everyone awkwardly trying to connect with the people they like. There’s a sort of definite timeline in the lyrics, which read more like a story than a dance track.
Trying hard to talk, bury my head in my hands
Still willing to listen, you would not understand
I still regret it to this day / Nothing I could say
Break up our dreams, I took the pieces with me
Tried to put it back together, much harder than it seemed
Would you remember me today? What more can I say?
‘Cause I’ve read your poems and I’ve been between those lines
I forget the rhythms now but that’s just between us
When I wrote these lines, I pictured myself in every writing class I’ve ever taken. The thought of only half paying attention to art that people have poured their hearts and souls into is a perfect summation of the human experience.
Don’t forget your music when you leave us behind
Sleeves and jewels might even protect you sometimes
I really wanted to have the line “jewel cases” in here somewhere, but I unfortunately found that it didn’t really flow. Kids carrying piles of CDs in their backpacks was the cool thing when I went to school.
Either way I’ll see you by next September
I carry the torch so you will never be that cold
Though this whole thing might convince you otherwise, I usually have a hard time tweeting my own horn. That being said, I feel like this line might be the best I’ve ever written.
Listen for the bells I shouldn’t be here right now
They’ve already started and they’ll leave me behind
Who can’t relate to being late to class because they were being a chatty Cathy.
Will we come back again? Would things be the same?
These halls heard the secrets that we whispered back then
So I turn to them because I always seem to forget
So I hope you listened well / Would you ever tell?
‘Cause I’ve seen you dancing and I’ve watched you turn away
And I’ve felt your push and pull / There’s nothing between us
I hope this line hits as hard as it did me when I wrote it.
You never looked for me when all the lights were turned down
No one would believe me if I told them right now
Either way I’ll see you by next September
I carry the torch so you will never feel you’re lost
Many years from now when you think back
And the memories blur together
Reaching out for something that’s not there
I’ve done the same thing
Dusting off the pages you’ve forgotten about
So you’ll catch a glimpse of something you had put down
Does it look the same today?
After catching a magnificent LCD Soundsystem show at the 2017 Sasquatch! Festival, I was more gung ho than ever to try doing a song with an electronic feel. Rather than go blind into uncharted waters, I figured it’d just try converting a song I already had into my idea of what a gothy club banger should sound like. After trying a few different compositions, I decided that this little tune I called “Torch” would be a good candidate. This song had struggled to take flight in its original form, but it got new wings when I slapped an assortment of synths on it. It was quite refreshing to work with a different set of tools than what I was used to, and I think it gives Bittersweet Defeat nice variety.
I read somewhere that a good pop song should overstate the most basic emotions. If we gauge this song by those standards, then this is surely a bad pop song. The message of the lyrics is so vague and convoluted (like most everything else I do) that anyone would have a hard time finding any true meaning. On the other hand, the fact that it’s so nebulous allows folks to inject their own meaning to the words, which is kinda better, in my opinion.
Be safe, children.

Hello friends! I hope yr staying safe out there.
Tonight we’ll talk about track number two of Bittersweet Defeat. This is dedicated to the folks born between May 20 and June 20. More specifically, it was written about one Gemini, and that’s Keith Girdler. For those of you out of the loop, Keith was the lead vocalist and songwriter for Blueboy. Their album Unisex is an absolute masterpiece of pop music, and I will never be convinced otherwise. Everything that band put out was just perfect, in my opinion. We sadly lost Keith on May 15, 2007 after he had been battling cancer for some time. Learning this was beyond heartbreaking, so this song was written as a sort of homage to Keith and the impact his music had on my development as a person.
When the leaves start falling on your steps outside, you will find me out here
Stones throw from where you think you are
That “stones throw” line was referencing the cover art for the Popkiss single. Though I never owned the vinyl, and only ever listened to this release digitally, I always found myself getting lost in images of the album art. The movement that the blur of the shutter illustrates makes the subjects look like renaissance-era catholic paintings. The rain clouds and the grey buildings evoke a lot of feeling. Very wistful.
I’ve been hiding away since I don’t know when, I’ll wait for you to find me
The map is hidden in the words I write
This line relates to the idea that songwriters tend to hide a lot of themselves in purposely vague lyrics. There’ve been many times when I listened to songs and felt this strong desire to understand the “meaning” of certain verses that seemingly make very little sense. Though I also know that some lines are meant to throw people for a loop.
And it’s a blue world, I’ll keep you with me
And it leaves me cold, You’re making me see
Hear my heart beat louder than a thunderstorm, hold me in your silence
I sprinkle a lot of references to Unisex song titles in this verse specifically.
Gentle like a rose in summer bloom
This is more of me getting lost staring at the band’s masterful cover artwork. This time, obviously, Unisex.
Cosmopolitan girl knows there’s better than me, but she holds me tightly
And she says she’ll never break my heart
My heart is blue, girl, as blue as the sea
It’s broke in two, oh, I hope that you see
And I hope you’re back by the month of May, see the summer waiting
See the first paragraph for more information.
Where you said you’d never break my heart
There’s a ton of suspended chords throughout, which I feel add to what I consider to be Blueboy’s signature sound. That coupled with a string accompaniment creates the atmosphere I was hoping to capture for this song. I can’t help being devastated every time I hear the opening to So Catch Him, and I wanted some of that emotion here. Even though, in the end, Gemini ended up having more of an airy string section. Either way, I hope this was a fun one for Blueboy fans to listen to, and I hope I did this beautiful artist a bit of justice. The most brilliant souls always seem to be the ones who leave us too quickly.
Be safe, children.

If we’re to start at the very beginning, I wrote my first song (if you could even call it that) when I was 14. I wrote this song when I was 24, and it has been one of my proudest achievements as a songwriter. Not because I think it’s a perfect song, but because I think it expresses something so perfectly. If every song I’ve written has been an attempt to meld melancholy and sweetness together, I feel like this is the closest I’ve gotten to achieving that.
This, like most of my songs, is about awkward love. I feel silly having to explain what I mean by this every time, but since you might be new here, I’ll try again. When I say love, I don’t mean exclusively romantic love. While the lyrics definitely apply to that, I feel like the meaning could extend to an awkward love for anything or anyone. Love for life, love for art, love for eclairs, etc.
In earlier versions of this song, the intro was the sound of a bell played in reverse through a delay pedal, but ultimately, I figured a simple melody played on a synthesizer was better suited for the feeling of the rest of the song. The original is still really neat, so I’ll include it for those who are curious.
You’re a chiming echo, hearing that bell ring
It’s no wonder how this angel got her wings
If you’ve seen the film It’s a Wonderful Life, you know this is a reference to the line “every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings.”
Such a pretty problem, stop me on my tracks
The heart is there but the conscience lacks, sends me back
Looking in the aisles, if you want to see
Try 791.43
If you find yrself in a library that sorts its nonfiction using the Dewey decimal system (which is practically every library in America), you can find the books relating to movies in this section.
It’s never been a problem, till I saw you here
It’s so hard to be sincere
I haven’t found you in these pages
And I don’t believe that’s the way it is
Falling snow, letting go
I won’t know how wonderful it’s been
It might be worth noting that words with the root “wonder” are meant to strengthen the ties to the movie, but I feel like that’s a little obvious, no?
Put love in quotations, taking tiny steps
That’s leaps and bounds as close as I can get
It’s all words and smiles, play it off as friends
I see how all of this will end
The phrase “Words and Smiles” is used kinda deliberately here, and I’ll be impressed if someone gets why. Most of the guitar parts in this song were my attempt to sound like Beat Happening, particularly the song Tiger Trap. The title could either be a reference to the first Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, or to the band of the same name. The band Tiger Trap has an incredible song called Words and Smiles, so its inclusion in the lyrics is all an awkward attempt to pay homage to any and all of these things. (P.S.: The Bratmobile split version of the song is infinitely better than the one in the self-titled.)
I haven’t found you in these pages
And I guess that’s the way it is
Falling down, come around
Yes, I found how wonderful it’s been
Oh, Mary, oh, Mary
I haven’t found you in these pages
And I don’t believe that’s the way it is
Falling snow, letting go
Yes, I know how painful it could be
Originally this was inspired by an album, that was itself inspired by It’s a Wonderful Life. I was a fan of Alex’s music from the first time our bands played on the same show together. I will admit that it’s a little embarrassing, in retrospect, that I was so moved by his music that my first instinct was to try to rip him off, but looking back now, I think it’s a sweet sort of tribute. We should all write tributes to our friends.
I don’t think there’s much else to say, so I’ll leave it at that for now. I hope I didn’t ruin too much of the “mystique.” Be sure to follow for more of these little TED talks on Spring Rain songs.
Be safe, Children.

Please listen to the first episode of my horror film podcast Video Heaven with music by @dreaminspires! As a pastel goth queer Jewess, I think I have a kinda cvte perspective on horror and horror kvltvre! This first series will focus solely on the revenge horror sub-genre and starts off with my childhood favorite Hard Candy! If candid discussion of graphic child abuse and sexual violence is a trigger for you (like it often is for me), please do not listen to this first episode! Follow me on Insta too if ya want (myvideoheaven)!
Episode one of the Video Heaven podcast explores 2006 revenge film Hard Candy and provides an introduction to the series.

““But if the alternatives to House’s rule are fascist military control and throwing the whole region back to fuckin’…Sparta, or whatever…” Rory rested her head in her hands, unsure what to make of it all.
“Sparta is Greek, not Roman,” corrected Arcade gently.
“I don’t give a shit,” Rory replied, just as sweetly.
Suddenly, Arcade’s eyes lit up. “Of course, you could just…I mean…if you had a friend who was pretty good with computers… maybe alter the objectives of this massive Securitron army, just a little off course…”
Rory was pretty sure she saw where he was going, but felt it important to curb her enthusiasm for practicality’s sake. “Arcade,” she said levelly, “you would have to know what you were doing. I mean really, really know what you were doing.”
Hi there!
My name is Rose, and I’ve worked really hard on this story. I’m no good at formal summaries, but let me try and pitch it to you.
Was Arcade Gannon your favorite?
No, I mean like, REALLY your favorite?
Do you wish he had more friends?
Do you think he deserved to be the hero of New Vegas?
Do you think it’s totally possible, nay, probable that Arcade is Jewish and wanna learn more about his relationship with God?
Well then let me sell you on this one.
Arcade meets the girl who would soon become his best friend, Rory Wood, when she stumbles into the Followers camp for a severe leg wound. Together, they go on a mission to chronicle the ins-and-outs of the wasteland…until Rory gets them tangled up with Caesar by mistake.
Now, they’re trying to get out of the Legion Fort, and move on to the next part: securing an independent New Vegas.
Arcade’s past, though, is knocking at the door, threatening to lose him not only his best friend, but the support of the Followers…
Will he tell Rory the truth?
Will the Followers find out?
Will Caesar crucify them both?
Read on to enjoy! Updates several times per week.
Content notes: This is a zero-smut fic. Arcade is a gay man, and ArcadeXF!Courier is a NOTP for me (and he should be for you too tbh, don’t straightwash gay characters :~) ). This is an action/adventure tale of best friendship and emotional intimacy–yknow, like you should have with the homies.
That being said, there is quite a bit of graphic violence, so just be aware of that!
A new chapter of this is up! And if I can just say? It was one of my absolute favorites to write lol.
Y’all have to check out my girl’s incredible Fallout story! Prepare to get freakishly sucked into it. You’re gonna be crying your eyes out btw. Also, it doesn’t matter if you haven’t played the game! I’ve never played. And I’m still obsessed. ❤️
