Rick Riordan’s switch up on Percy is so funny to me. In older books it’s painfully obvious that Riordan preferred him, with his constant insistence that Percy is the strongest despite severely under-exploring everyone else’s powers, every character speaking highly of him, and his insane feats. In recent books, Percy is both demonised and flanderised. He has been dumbed down to the point of being unable to do anything without Annabeth, he’s being called out and blamed for things he didn’t do, and he’s just being bashed at every opportunity. Literally what happened???

percy all of twelve years old, three apples tall, sitting with the truth that what happened wasn’t a dream. the minotaur was there and it grabbed his mom and…he remembers a shower of gold but he also remembers hearing all about how his mind is wrong from all his teachers and counselors, how it doesn’t work right, not to mention how “normal” human brains function and the way they can overwrite their own memories and force themselves to believe in what didn’t happen rather than what did. percy who spent the last year being gaslit by both grover and chiron about how mrs dodds didn’t exist and that he didn’t kill her. percy trying with all his might to figure out if he really watched his mother became a shower of gold or if it’s his mind tricking himself and she was really a shower of red viscera

I really liked your last post about Piper. I'm reading all the books again and one thing that sticks out to me is that Rick has a pattern of embarrassing women in a kinda sexual way as a joke, have you noticed this? Like everything with Piper, and Percabeth getting walked on, etc

hmmmmmm true. definitely not all of these are equally bad (i.e. I think the sallypaul scene is fine personally) but it does seem like ones being humiliated most in these contexts are piper reyna and annabeth, and that it happens often enough that it's fair to feel discomfort with and point this out in rick's writing of women and girls. you know especially girls

i feel like a big reason for why nico is known as the character with the most trauma or the most tragic character- regardless of if he actually is or not- is simply because he had a very clear and strong reaction to it

for other characters that have gone through a lot of trauamtic events we never see too much of a reaction aside from when it just happens. we hardly see percy even think about the bullying or abuse he went through, annabeths pov in hoo gives us almost nothing about luke or her father, leo is more well known as a tragic character but even for him he ignores his trauma with humor

though another big reason for why nico is seen as so tragic is because of how old he is, but by the time hoo comes around rick has forgotten his age so much that he made him basically the same age as a few of the seven and of course his age also is a reason for his such strong reaction. for a lot of these characters, we dont see their most extreme traumatic event happen in real time and mostly only hear of it, but since we see nicos direct reaction to the traumatic event, and considering his age and how dependent he was on bianca, we can see how it affected him a lot better than we can for other characters

basically nicos trauma is a lot more of his personality than other characters

percy constantly says pacifically instead of specifically and it drives annabeth crazy <- three seconds away from throttling him

Percy, no! You'll start a pun war you won't be able to end! She'll replace "I'll" with "owl" and even though it sounds the same, you'll know she's saying "weave" instead of "we've!"

ALSO. the funniest part of odypen -> percabeth reincarnation idea to me. is the thought of penelope!percy listening to odysseus!annabeth slaughter the suitors. then percy sighing longing about it in modern times. “you don’t slaughter suitors for me anymore :(“ annabeth not even looking up is just like “i almost did with rachel. do you want me to go back to my ways?” and percy giggles and blushes before sighing and going “nooooo rachel is my friend :/“ percabeth finding out they’re odypen reincarnated and percy immediately imagines annabeth slaughtering the suitors and being butt ass naked and covered in their blood. it takes him a good five minutes to refocus. percy imagining annabeth as a man like odysseus and going. oh waow. annabeth imagining percy as a woman like penelope and going. oh WAOW. it takes them a minute to lock back in. bi4bi losers

I saw the gifs of Percy holding up the sky in PJOTV S3 and honestly my reaction was "This would be really cool if it was a stage play, but can't they do better than a big bowl for this huge TV production?" It looked like an inconvenience, not an unbearable burden.
