Some of Van Gogh’s best work was done during a period of his life that he spent in a hospital being treated for his mental health problems. I could be wrong but I think Starry Night was among those.

This is consistently the case. Creators tend to do their best work when they are in a healthy place and receiving proper treatment and not being self destructive in their efforts to cope. Go figure.

All our experiences, good and bad, inform what we create, but suffering is not the price of great art. Suffering is what prevents artists from completing great art.

I can confirm that Starry Night was indeed painted during a time where he was receiving treatment. To be precise, it’s the view from his room at the hospital he stayed at in…France, I think? He added the town himself too, it wasn’t there irl.

So yeah, he got his motivation and creativity back through treatment and art isn’t born from suffering.

Can't stop thinking about muntjac deer. See the thing with muntjacs is that they have these large scent glands below the eyes and on the forehead, and they use them to mark territory. Many types of deer have the glands in front of the eyes (pre-orbital) but muntjac are unique in having forehead glands (frontal). Here's the video I saw. There's something really unsettling about the idea of an animal being able to like. Open it's face. Idk I think it's madly creepy but it's like a perfectly natural thing for the animal to do. It just looks scary.

No, a hummingbird’s heart will not stop if it stops moving. You’re possibly thinking of Spoink, which is a Pokemon that supposedly powers its heart by bouncing, and as such can’t stop moving. Hummingbirds don’t sit often because they’re busy looking for food, but they can and do sit. The females sit on eggs in nests, after all, and they do have to sleep.

Fun fact: the leg muscles of a hummingbird are so stripped down to save on weight that they cannot walk. They can step sideways along a branch or other perch, but they cannot go forward without taking flight.

However they absolutely do stop moving. In fact, hummingbirds hibernate! Overnight. Instead of sleeping. Because if they tried to sleep like a normal animal their hyperactive metabolism would mean that they starve to death before breakfast.

Unrelated fun fact: the primary Aztec god of war would take on the form of a hummingbird, and the souls of the bravest warriors were said to turn into hummingbirds in order to join him after death, presumably because every hummingbird is approximately four grams of pure concentrated asskicking which fears no man nor beast and will gladly throw down with somebody seventeen thousand times their size if offended.

Sorry to rant but a lot of the comments are like "haha this student's just mad whatever"

Quite a few professors are so unbelievably confident in their teaching abilities that they refuse to accept any criticisms. A lot of the responses these professors got are mean and unnecessary, but a lot of them don't seem to be taking it on. Something has pushed these students to say what they said. One of the professors even said "A student once climbed out the window to get out of my class" like its a funny joke. How that isn't a wake up call for them, I will never know. If that is happening to you, you need to reevaluate what you're doing.

A lot of professors have never had any formal teaching education, and are placed into these positions purely because of the quality of what they do in their field. Just because someone is a world-reknowned archaeologist and expert in Ancient Egyptian, doesn't mean they are qualified to teach. How would someone coming straight from the field know how to cater to students of differing learning abilities, without formal education on the matter? Why is it that for students aged 4-18 teachers need to complete years worth of training in classrooms and at university to be considered worthy to teach, but once that student has entered university it's their fault if they don't understand the information that's just being read to them from a textbook the professor wrote?

The most fustrating part, I find, was when a professor of mine that I'm fairly close with told me that when the evals, which are anonymous, come in, the professors make a game of matching the negative comments with the failed students. They don't take on anything that is written and brush it off as "oh, they're only mad bc they failed." This is embarrassing and just because you have tenure does NOT mean you are exempt from learning and bettering yourself. I've struggled through years of university. I've had a professor for Egyptian publicly shame students who asked for further explanations. I failed a class due to personal reasons and when I asked the professor just to tell me where I went wrong on the exam so when I redo the class I can do better and instead of answering he told me that I should only come back when I'm prepared to commit. It's been 4 years and I've had these professors over and over again with no change to their behaviour or teaching pattern.

Your job is to teach. Your job is to make information and your knowledge accessable to your students and your job is to help them learn. Sure, if the student doesn't show up or do the homework or something, fine, that's on them, not you. But if you are frequently getting students brave enough to say "I don't understand" then you need to find a way to make them. You are required, in your position, to help them. If your reviews are suggesting what you're doing isn't working, change it or change your job. You are not exempt from bettering yourself and you are not above listening to your students.

Also you have to legit beg on your hands and knees for students to fill out evals...you could tell them your wife was kidnapped and filling out evals is the only way to save her and your students would still be like, lol no? Professors are lucky to get like 4 evals for every 30 students.

So for these students to actually fill out your evals and with such fucking detail means you are a complete fucking fuckup as a professor and you should be embarrassed.
