Hii wasn't dumb, he knew something was off about you the first time he witnessed you fight just as recklessly as he did, completely unafraid of the consequences that might come. You fought relentlessly in every fight you went into, barely flinching at anything that came at you, even if they were potentially hazardous or, in the worst cases, extremely deadly. It didn't matter if it was the terrain or your opponent; it was clear you ignored the threat of danger in any scenario. At least you weren't a coward like that pathetic boy he'd made a pact with.
Still, despite his suspicions, the reasons fueling your impetuous practices ultimately remained a mystery to him. Besides one inkling, that is, the small hourglass presently attached to the loop of your belt. Of course, he'd figured out it was a jinki a while ago, back when Fu had first joined the side of the Cleaners on trial. Though he had no clue what it did or how it worked, and it seemed no one else did either. So he left it. Why would he bother investigating any further? Learning the answer wouldn't benefit him, and not knowing was hardly an annoyance; it didn't bother him or Fu.
At least he thought it didn't, I mean, he's sure it didn't at first. Apparently, something had changed between you both when he'd first encountered you compared to now. You were just such an odd case. All Hii was to everyone else was Fu's cursed doll, nothing more. He never cared; he knew he was real enough when he got his chances to shine, fighting and doing the things his other half couldn't. It was the only time he could speak and freely move around, so of course, when he was back in the doll, nobody acknowledged him.
Except for you. It was strange, the way you greeted him and told him hello, sometimes even before you did Fu. Constantly, it was ❝ Hey Fu ❞ followed by ❝... and Hii ❞. He didn't answer; the only one capable of hearing him was Fu, so he never bothered. You continued doing it anyway. You especially liked talking to him when he did have control over their body. Questions, questions, and even more questions. Occasional compliments on his fighting. That's when Hii decided you were annoying. Really annoying. Even so, he decided to let you stick around. Only because you were nice to Fu.
He tolerated fighting beside you, your pestering, and all your small habits. Everything. And today was no different, same old type of mission, get rid of the trash beasts. He was used to it by now. He could tear these pests up without thinking twice. You were here too, with a few others, but Hii had seen you handle yourself perfectly well plenty of times in the past. Like he said, today wasn't going to be anything different. Just get the job done and leave.
It was going well. He'd taken out a fair amount of the smaller trash beats, ripping them apart and shredding through them with brute force. The supporters and cleaners were doing their share, but you were out of his line of sight, surely throwing yourself directly at the problem. He was busy feeling the rush of adrenaline fighting typically gave him, indulging in it while it lasted. Hii trusted you could manage by yourself. Until someone screamed your name, tone panicked and desperate.
His head turned by a margin, just to check, but in that moment, he swore everything slowed as he saw it. The noise of the world was drowned out by the sight in front of him. The permanent grin usually plastered on his face fell completely, your eyes were blown wide as blood seeped out your mouth. Time seemed to have stilled in that moment, everybody's eyes glued to your speared body. Then it was over; the horn had been ripped out just as quickly as it had gone through your chest. He moved without thinking, his body reacting faster than his mind could catch up. His hands were ripping into the waste-made flesh, muck staining his palms as it was torn apart piece by piece. The anima-powered creature, now reduced to debris and ash, blew away after meeting its fate in the hands of Hii, who only stopped after hearing the distressed sounds you were making. Your body had collapsed onto the ground, bleeding out, unable to move in horrible, staggering pain.
Your arms were shaking, fidgeting with the loop of your belt for something. Unaware of how you were able to move, but knowing whatever you did made the hourglass on your waist light up. He didn't care about that; he was too distracted to focus, watching you lie there, moving slower by the second. He cautiously scooped you up. Your pulse was barely audible, your heartbeat faint. Too faint to even feel or hear at all. He stood there with you in his arms like that for a minute to two, staring at your limp form with incomprehensible thoughts he couldn't seem to straighten out, all jumbled in his mind that had simultaneously come to a halt and somehow thinking two million things at once.
There was no way you were dead, but the stillness of your body, followed by the blood loss caused by the gushing wound seeping into your uniform, told him everything he needed to know. You were dead.
For maybe 5 minutes at most.
Hii couldn't do anything but blankly stare at your wide, lifeless eyes. He had remained staring down at you as grief washed over him, until you'd abruptly gasped, writhing around for air as your lungs expanded. You sat up in a sudden motion, nearly hitting him in the face. He yelled and cussed and nearly dropped you. Which was fair, considering he was entirely and irrevocably sure humans weren't supposed to come back from the dead, but the hole he knew he saw gaping in the middle of your chest had magically closed? And you were seemingly fine compared to the lifeless body he had just been holding a few minutes ago. Your eyes met his, and a spew of words fell from your mouth ❝ ...Hii, this is really nice...but we should probably find me a doctor asap...Before I actually do end up dead ❞, you choked out the remaining blood in your mouth, smiling stifly before you suddenly raised your hand up and pulled his head down towards your face before pecking him on the cheek. His whole body stiffened before he slowly pulled away, followed by your whispered ❝ Okay? ❞
Perhaps the more jarring idea to him was the fact that your death had upset him at all, let alone overwhelmed him. But this was a close second.
All he said after was ❝ ya owe me an explanation later; a big one.... ❞ accompanied by a hesitant mumble ❝... and don't let that happen again ❞
Hii learnt a lot about you that day. That apparently being immortal came in lots of different shapes and sizes, including jinkis, and that you just so happened to have lived a thousand different lives through yours, retaining your memories from nearly all of them. Including the last breaths you took during them. You'd been so many different people.
Yet, somehow you'd begun to cherish this life in particular, the desire to live a fulfilling life with no regrets pouring into that little hourglass you kept ( something you'd only started keeping to keep up with how long you'd liked this life. It occupied you ), so that when you reset it, it reset your body too. The wounds would fade back in eventually, but if you reached a doctor in enough time, you could be right as rain again in no time.
Unfortunately, he learnt something else too. As stupid and agonizing as it may be, he didn't want to lose you. He'd like to be a part of this version of you, this life you're living right now, just a little bit longer.
... You two would definitely be talking about that kiss later, however.
