βYouβre not on breakfast duty, what are you doing that early in the kitchen?β
Perona yawns and wraps her arms around you from behind, burying her tired face in the crook of your neck. Her lips kiss your bare skin softly, sending a warm shiver down your spine. You canβt help but smile, taking her hands in yours and closing your eyes for a bit, enjoying the sleepy kitchen cuddles. Earlier you were careful not to wake her up as you sneaked out your shared, cozy bed but apparently she had noticed your absence immediately.
βIt was supposed to be a surpriseβ¦ but since youβre here, letβs do it together?β, you suggest and hand her a whisk. She looks curious over your shoulder, trying to catch a glimpse of the recipe.
βFlan? Oh, Iβve heard of that, you told me all about it!β
She shuffles to the other end of the kitchen (the tiredness from ten seconds ago completely forgotten) and comes back with two aprons. She sewed them herself for your first anniversary. After you had spent many date nights together in the kitchen, it was just fitting. Hers was black with lavender frills and a little pocket to keep a tiny plushie, yours was in your favorite colors and had her jolly roger on it.
You help each other tying the aprons behind your backs, paired with lots of kisses on the cheek and forehead, both of you giggling like the fools in love that you were. Not a day has passed where you didnβt feel like the luckiest person walking on earth with her by your side. With a gentle kiss on the lips you take the two scrunchies from her wrist, carefully tying her messy bed hair in two ponytails so it doesnβt get in her way.
With one of your favorite vinyl playing softly in the background, the two of you finally get to work. You knew this recipe by heart, how could you not? It has been passed down for generations through your family and something that always reminded you of home, just like she did. Carefully you instruct her step by step. She was eager to learn more, it was a delight to watch her in the kitchen. Perona knew what she was doing when she prepared the caramel and also watched you carefully when you explained how to do the filling. During the time the flan was baking in the oven, you worked together to clean the kitchen again, feeding each other the sweet leftovers.
βIs it ready to eat yet?β, Perona asked eagerly as she watched you take the flan out of the oven, tiptoeing around you in anticipation. You shake your head and smile apologetically. βWe need to cool it down in a waterbath first and then put it in the refrigerator for a few more hours.β
The disappointment from her face vanishes when you suggest making a few sandwiches together and play some video games meanwhile. This girl was easy to motivate and was happy as long as you could spend time togetherβ but so were you. Hand in hand you run back to your shared room, greeting Mihawk and Zoro cheerfully as you pass them in the long hallway, letting them know that you left them a few sandwiches ready to eat in the kitchen. None of them were questioning where you were running off to β probably your usual Kuraigana Island shenanigans.
Time flew by, you spent hours playing and napping together and as the sun started to set outside, you snuggled closer together under the warm blanket. If only you could lay like this forever, with all the worries being shut out, just pure bliss and a love that was as soft as cotton candy.
βDo you want to do something forbidden?β, you whisper into Peronaβs ear, your thumb drawing small circles on her hand that lay in yours. She gives you a look and instantly knows.
βFood in bed?β
You nod and let her pull you into a sweet kiss, her excitement almost spilling over like that big strawberry milkshake once did that led to the food ban in bed in the first place. But tonight, you didnβt care.
You pick a handful of flowers through the open kitchen window and put them in a small vase on the tablet, next to the finished flan. Carefully you balance the whole thing back to your shared room where Perona was already waiting eagerly with the biggest smile on her face. Her eyes widen when she sees the flan gently wobbling from side to side with every step you take and your heart feels so full and warm. That was all you ever wanted. By now, the memory of her big smile had burned itself in your heart forever.
βItβs so cute, I donβt want to eat it!β, she exclaims, giving the dessert a small jiggle with her spoon, grinning from ear to ear.
βBut the first bite is the best. Hereβ¦β
You dig in with the silver spoon in your hands, taking a small piece from the side and turn to Perona, smiling when you see her open her mouth to let you feed her. She takes her time to taste it, overexaggerating in her gestures until she dramatically flops back to the bed, yelling out loud that it was the best damn thing she had ever tasted and that she demanded more. You spend the night feeding each other, cuddling and kissing in between until you fall asleep next to the almost eaten flan, waking up in the morning and remembering why you had that food ban in bed in the first place⦠but it was all worth it, because once again you were reminded that your love tasted sweeter than caramel, melting your heart as if it was made out of sugar.
Depends on if youβre talking strictly from a literary standpoint or if you want to look at it from an in-universe perspective.
Literarily, Luffy is an anti hero with a strong emphasis on hero. Most of his actions are ultimately quite heroic and have a net benefit on society as a whole. Even his most morally ambiguous actionsβreleasing the Impel Down prisoners and stealing a bunch of gold from Sky Islandβhave extenuating circumstances attached that add a little asterisk beside the crime. Yes, Luffy stole a bunch of treasure, but the Sky Islanders were willing to give it and more to him freely. Yeah, a lot of those prisoners were terrible people, but they were being horrifically tortured by an unjust government and ultimately used to try and save a man being executed for the crime of being related to the wrong man.Β
If we want to pretend if Luffyβs a real personβ¦he acts more like a fey creature or some ancient god of old.Β Thereβs a logic to his actions, Β but it doesnβt follow a modern morality system, and itβs easy to imagine a universe where a slightly more capricious Luffy causes just as much harm as good.
Luffy is ultimately a very selfish character. He doesnβt really care for people other than himself or his friends, and ultimately the reason why he wants friends so badly is driven by a personal desire to never be lonely. He didnβt save Nami because of some noble desire to free the enslaved and see justice done against a murderous pirate, but to help a friend he knew to be hurting.
ItβsΒ just that he happens to make friends very easily, often to good people with noble intentions, and is willing to move heaven and earth to ensure their personal health and well-being. Heβs not interested in being a good person. He doesnβt care if his crew and allies are full of murderers and brigands. He doesnβt want to be conformed by any standards or rules forced upon him by another person. He doesnβt want to be obligated to do anything he doesnβt want to do.
As he put so succinctly, he doesnβt want to always share his meat. Now, if he chooses to share it freely, thatβs a different story.
At the same time, Luffy does have a very rigid code he upholds himself to. All of East Blue was spent exploring his ideal of what it means to be a pirate and a captain, and we see how he reacts to anyone who doesnβt live up to his exacting standards.Β
Itβs just that that code has nothing to do with the typical moral quandaries. His personalΒ βthou shalt notsβ have nothing to do with stealing or murder, and everything to do with how he goes about pursuing his own personal freedoms.Β

You confused Law.
Most Heart Pirates respected him. He could say a command and instantly know it would be received and followed through. He could come up with a plan and trust it would be executed to the best of each pirateβs ability. He could speak and rely on his crew to listen intently to his words. His authority was never questioned on the Polar Tang.
You, on the other hand, were different.
He could tell that somewhere deep down you did respect him, but you had a ratherβ¦ unusual way of showing it. While you eventually followed through with Lawβs orders, you often didnβt do so without a borderline unbearable amount of bickering with the captain. No matter what he did, you seemed dead set on pushing every one of his buttons that you could, drawing satisfaction when the Surgeon of Death lost his composure. It was confusing, it was infuriating, but for some reason, Law found himself letting you get away with it most of the time.
However, there was another thing about you in particular that stumped him: your strange attire.
Ever since Law met you, he noticed the sheer number of clothes that you wore. Layer after layer, you bundled yourself up in jackets, pants, shirts, anything, as if you were preparing for the largest blizzard known to man every time you stepped out of your room. It was almost comical how you were nearly drowning in your own attire.
At first, he had chalked it up to your origins. You were from a winter island, after all, and a painfully frigid one. It would make sense for you to layer up for warmth in a place like that, and old habits die hard. It wasnβt until your second month as a Heart Pirate that Law began to wonder, but he decided it was best to keep his curiosity to himself.
Lost in thought, Law hardly noticed Shachiβs repeated question until the poor man was practically yelling.
βCaptain?β Shachi let out a sigh of relief when Law finally turned to him. βCaptain, shouldnβt we wait on (Y/N)? Sheβs not out here yet.β
Bepo nodded. βI donβt think it would be fair for us to search the island without her. She always loves it when we dock at new places.β
Law blinked at the two of them before turning to glance around the deck. Sure enough, he didnβt see (Y/N)-yaβs familiar face in the crowd. How had he not noticed that she was missing?
βHm,β he hummed, lips turned down in a frown. Scanning the crowd yet again for your face, Law let out a frustrated sigh when he was met with no sign of you. βI thought I was clear that we would be leaving at noon.β
βDo you want me to get her?β Bepo asked. βShe probably just slept in, you know how she-β
βThat wonβt be necessary,β Law cut in. βI can check on her myself.β
A silence fell over the Heart Pirates, the discomfort prompting Law to glance around at his crew. To his annoyance, each pirate wore a similar expression of worry on their face, and Law couldnβt help but feel that their concern wasnβt for him. There was nothing wrong with him going to check on a crewmate, so why did they all look like (Y/N)-ya was about to be murdered in cold blood?
Law rolled his eyes. He didnβt have the energy for his crewβs antics right now. There was absolutely nothing weird about him going to get (Y/N)-ya himself. Heβs her captain. If sheβs not on schedule, itβs up to him to remind her the importance of punctuality on his crew. He had an exact mental itinerary for how this day was to go, and he would not have her tamper with it. Tearing himself away from their stares, Law made his way toward the girlsβ rooms.
By the time he arrived at (Y/N)βs door, the room all the way at the end of the hall, Law had drafted a complete lecture in his head. He knew exactly what he would tell you, exactly how he would tell you, and he had even calculated a few possible reactions he might receive from you. So, raising himself to his full height and fixing a stern expression on his face, Law knocked.
Silence.
He knocked again.
β¦And again.
Lawβs frustration erupted into full-blown rage. He knew you had a tendency to be late, but to embarrass him by ignoring his knocks not once, not twice, but three times? No, to say Law was angry was an understatement. Law was infuriated.
Without a second thought, Law turned the door handle and made his way into your room. His arms folded defensively over his chest, and his mouth fell open in preparation to hurl a string of likely unkind words toward you. Whether those words were to question your audacity or to generally rebuke you for your silence, he didnβt know.
Moreover, he didnβt think he would ever know, for any train of thought came to a screeching halt at the sight he observed before him.
Bent over and in nothing but your underwear and a backless black shirt, there you were in all your glory, facing away from him and lazily wringing shower water out of your hair with a towel.
Law had absolutely no idea what to do. Should he be looking? No, he definitely shouldnβt be looking at the way the waistband of your underwear hugged your hips. Or the way the criss-cross strings of your shirt were being stretched across your back, revealing planes of muscle that he never- Get a hold of yourself. He just needed to look somewhere else. The wall? The bed? The floor? Lawβs eyes darted from left to right, attempting to stare anywhere but your backside.
It wasnβt until his eyes passed over you a third time that he noticed a flash of black ink swirling around your left hip.
Was that⦠a tattoo?
Sure enough, Law recognized a beautiful tattoo of an oddly familiar-looking vine. The plant started from below your waistband, curling around your left hip and trailing up your spine until it branched off across your shoulder blades into several spiraling tendrils. As his eyes swept across your back, he caught note of the various flowers and thorns that the vine bore. He found himself tracing the spiraling pattern with his eyes over and over again, from the top of your back all the way down to-
βWhat the fuck?!β
Lawβs eyes snapped away from the canvas of your back, instead making eye contact with a bewildered, flustered, and very angry (Y/N). Scrambling away from Law, you pointlessly used the too-small hair towel as a makeshift curtain, attempting to hide your exposed skin from his view. βYou couldnβt have knocked first?β
So prepared was he to give you the lecture of a lifetime, and yet here he stood, rooted to the ground and unable to even make simple eye contact with you. He shifted his weight awkwardly from foot to foot, placing his hands on his sword, then at his side, before retiring them to their comfortable place within his pockets. It was just a tattoo. Nothing abnormal. Pursing his lips, he steeled his nerves and forced his gaze to meet yours.
βI did knock,β he said eventually. βYou just refused to answer.β
βSo barging into a half-naked womanβs room was your solution?β
Law sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose with his hand. βI came to tell you that youβre late.β He then dropped his hand from his face, fixing you with an authoritative glare. βAll of us agreed to set out for this island at noon, so thereβs no reason you should be here unclothed.β
β...And this excuses you checking me out, how exactly?β You shoot back at him, about ready to give up on the tiny excuse for a towel. Itβs not like it was really hiding anything from him anyway.
Lawβs eyes widened for about half a second before returning to their original harsh stare. βChecking you out?β He crosses his arms, the malice practically tangible in his gaze.
βYeah,β you fix him with a glare of your own. βLast I checked, staring at someoneβs ass constitutes βchecking out,β Captain.β Before he could respond, you simply tossed the towel aside and turned back around, bearing your tattooed backside to Law yet again. While searching for the pants you planned to wear that day, you attempted to backtrack a bit. βIβm almost ready. Sorry for being late, I lost track of time.β
βThat vine was common in your hometown.β
You freeze, almost forgetting the tattoo that your current position displayed for him. He was right, though. Just before embarking on your first journey with the Heart Pirates, you had made the impulsive decision to get a tattoo. It was meant to be something small, just a memento that would remind you of home from time to time while at sea. However, your townβs tattoo artist had a way with words, convincing you to instead receive the elaborate design you now bore on your back. It took you by surprise that Law would remember that vine, even if it was one of the only plants that your hometownβs icy weather didnβt destroy.
You find yourself caught yet again by surprise at the much calmer expression now on his face. Rather than smiting you with a glare hateful enough to rival Satan himself, Law now regarded you with what seemed to be mild interest. If you were correct, his eyes had a twinkle of what looked almost like⦠curiosity.
βYeah,β you said finally. βI thought itβd be a nice tribute to my hometown. Itβs the only place in the world that grows vines like these.β
Law hummed in understanding. βItβs distinctive. Meaningful. β¦I didnβt know you had a tattoo.β
Still unsure of this new attitude of his, you continued to speak as if you were walking on eggshells. βI got it just before we left my town.β
A flash of recognition passes over his face. βThe tattoo parlor.β
βYou saw it?β Your eyebrows quirk in surprise. The tattoo parlor wasnβt quite hidden, but it definitely was not widely known.
He nodded, his eyes widening ever so slightly in excitement at the topic. It was a strange look on him. Not a bad one, per se, it was just foreign to see such an innocent emotion on the Surgeon of Death. βI noticed it by the river. The designs caught my eye.β
βWhy? You wanted another tattoo?β You smirk. βYouβre pretty tatted up already, donβt you think?β
A smirk tugged at his lips, but for some reason it didnβt seem quite so cocky. Instead, it almost seemedβ¦ playful. Lifting his hand with his palm facing toward him, he wiggled his inked fingers. βI like tattoos,β he said simply.
βMe too,β you grin. It was strange. Looking at Law now, he seemed like a different person entirely. With his new, friendlier mood, you thought it might be worth a shot to test the waters. βSince we both like tattoos, how about you let me off the hook for being late?β
Immediately, whatever child-like innocence he once displayed melted into an ugly glower.
βNot in the slightest. You have kitchen duty for the next month.β Turning around, he ignores your sputters of protest. Just before he closes your door, he makes sure to call out behind him. βAnd for every minute that passes, you have an extra day of it.β
And with that, the Surgeon of Death had exited your room, leaving you still half-naked, still with wet hair, and still not at all ready for an island exploration. But also, funnily enough, you had a strange notion that something might have changed between you and your fellow tattooed Heart Pirate. What exactly that was, you had yet to find out.

Itβs always been an interesting topic to see how people interpret Sanjiβs character, in general. Usually, if he is not liked in fandom, he is seen as a hardcore pervert who thinks nothing more than that and all the arguments are based on his will to peep women and his nose bleedings. Then, there are other thoughts, that consider that his ero- kappa side is partly an exaggerated gag made by Oda-sensei.
Ever since the beginning, itβs been fun to ponder the reasons behind the charactersβ behavior and Sanji is not an exception. Actually, he was one of the characters I didnβt completely like in the beginning, because back then, during the elementary school, it was hard to understand why would someone fall in love with (almost) every lady they meet. Then slowly his characteristic started to open more to my blind eyes and the more I saw the soft side of Sanji and how much he puts effort on his friends, the more reasonable it was to see why he is so popular among fans. It seems like the hate he gets is mostly because people pay attention to his lust-side and examine it only from one point of view.
There was a very interesting analyze written by @cruising-on-pirate-dreams
about Sanjiβs personality and tendency to be called pervert. In comparison, the fellow fan used Absalom and there were good points to be lifted up:
Absalom without a shame used his devil fruit skills to lurk on both Nami and Robin and never gave a ratβs eye whether Nami or Robin liked his forceful style to approach them. Both of them were clear objects to him that he licked and touched without permission, he even said openly that he likes Nami more because she is weaker in his eyes and later he kidnapped her and made her unconscious so he could marry her by force.
Sanji has a tendency to put himself into the submissive position, especially when it comes down to interacting with women. Yes, of course, he has this βI need lady~!β-kind of side but itβs remarkable how the more familiar/closer the woman is, the more submissive he actually is, in other words, he never puts himself above the ladies, especially when it comes down to interacting with Nami and Robin.
Before the Whole Cake Island arc was published, Iβve written in Reasons to love Mugiwaras - Sanji - post that I actually do believe that despite the reputation and what he gives out of himself in public (being tough and ladies man), deep inside he is actually very broken and vulnerable and once more of his past was revealed after the time skip, the more sense all the headcanons and speculations started to become logical.
The flashbacks in the Baratie arc showed that he was on edge of dying after the shipwreck which gave a little pieces of information about him but after the Germa66 and Sanjiβs links into it were revealed, it was even more clear that he indeed had a terrible and traumatic childhood and suffered from great amounts neglection and abuse by his biological family until he escaped. The new
supplement/update of the background story finally gave a further and more detailed explanation of why Sanji doesnβt see self-worth in himself and always puts others in front of him. He has put himself under the target line for his nakamas many times without caring how his own life and his dreams of finding All Blue would be thrown into waste if the worst-case scenario happened.
Thankfully, there was someone from the family standing by his side and therefore Sanji grew very close to his mother. Unfortunately, she passed away early due to the illness (that actually protected Sanji to become an emotionless killing machine like his brothers) and then he was again left all alone in his personal hell.Β Soraβs death mightβve left a certain gap in his heart. Perhaps the reason he treats women kindly (especially the ones he really adores) has roots in Soraβs way to support Sanji and maybe inside his core, he decided to continue sharing her motherβs legacy of kindness. He might appear like a tough guy who swears like a sailor but only the fact that he has saved an enemy from starvation tells that Sanji truly has a heart of gold, just like Sora.
Itβs highly likely that behind the scenes and below the surface,Β Sanji could be actually looking for similar acceptance and unconditional love he got from his mother. But why then do all that ero-kappa stuff and womanizing when being around women? Mainly I still believe that itβs a continuous character gag just like Zoroβs poor sense of direction or Namiβs greediness but somehow it feels that there might be logical reasons behind this behavior.
Of course, itβs easy to interpret and only think that he is just a lustful pervert from the fact that his locker is full of girl magazines and that especially during the crewβs reunion after the time skip when it felt like Sanji couldnβt control himself with his nose bleedings.
However, if one takes a look to past 20 years One Piece has existed, itβs remarkable to see how much Sanji actually does pay respect to women, especially towards his crewmates. He doesnβt only give compliments on their appearance (i.e how cute they look) or use polite suffixes (βchanβ and βsanβ) while communicating with them, he also praises openly and sincerely their skills and how strong they are. So, itβs obvious that Sanji definitely sees more than just their bodies.
Then to body swap, what @cruising-on-pirate-dreams wrote as well in another post. Itβs easy to be seen that Sanji was happy that Law happened to swap his and Namiβs bodies and yes, he took peeks and adored the body features. However, because of this ero kappa-gag, one perspective is easily being left out of the spotlights (if readers didnβt pay enough attention): He did take good care of Namiβs body and he was aware how his actions can affect on her body and reflected on them many times. He smoked in her body but felt bad for doing that. Now it could be easily argued: βIf he cares about Nami, why did he smoke in the first place?β but the answer is simple, he is a chain smoker and besides, Nami herself did give him the permission and the cigarettes in Punk Hazard.
Well, despite Namiβs warnings, he did take her jacket away when she wasnβt looking but he had a good reason (Kinemonβs torso was underwater and he happened to be the best swimmer out of the options) and besides, he apologized, just like he apologized for harming her lungs with his cigarettes. He also kept constantly worrying whether the diving would be too much for Namiβs body under the circumstances.
So, if Sanji really does only see Nami as a sexual object he wouldnβt have feel an urge to apologize for things he did when their bodies were swapped. If sheβd only matter to him for lustful reasons and for good looks, he could have taken the advantange on her by taking everything away and do more exploring (if he was alone) but he didnβt because obviously, they were busy solving the mess Caesar made but mostly, (putting aside the comedy-reasons) he knows that going further would have been way too disrespectful and would have violated their nakamaship (and would be against the fact that he has protected her purity back in Thriller Bark and tried to avoid to stain her) especially if he later got caught somehow and it would anyway make no sense if he wanted to hurt her in any way intentionally.Β
So, at least for me especially Punk Hazard was an arc that proved that despite the comedy, Robin and Nami are clearly not objects for Sanji and although he surely has felt some lust towards them, he respects the boundaries treats them well and speaks with much softer tones to them and even uses certain suffixes while addressing them.Β
Someone asked the reasons behind the suffixes and whether there are any deeper meaningsΒ Odaβs response was that he was basically inspired by his older staff members who wanted to be treated as they were younger. Zeff taught Sanji chivalry and perhaps this detail of the story was really based on Odaβs real life.
Back to the previous topic, why is Sanji portrayed as a pervert? Well, mainly for sure to make balance with comics on heavy storylines and because being interest in opposite-sex openly seems to be part of who he is but then thinking below the surface, what if those wild nosebleeds and dreams about peeping women are all actually just a mask of him? Yes, he does have a crush easily on women he meets and flirts with them but what if there is more than that?
Actually, one of the headcanons Iβve had for years is that Sanji has experienced a traumatic loss that has given him the deep fear of losing the others he holds dear (and thatβs why heβd be so sacrificial) and Whole Cake Island sort of supported that thought. It can be possible that because he was strongly bullied by his siblings and despised by his own father (being called a weakling and so on), this all has stained his self-confidence below zero for good and it still will take time to see that he is worthy. Hopefully, Luffyβs words back in Baratie and the retrieval teamβs efforts and experiencing his lowest point before the tea party opened his eyes for good and gave his character the chance to grow. Β
Like many fans agree, the only place where Sanji has complete confidence is anywhere that is related on his profession, cooking because Zeff convinced that the βchibi-Nasuβ really does have potential in becoming a chef, otherwise, he can be surprisingly insecure although he doesnβt show it up openly, perhaps he hides it with this kind of actions.Β On top of that, Zeff raised Sanji to respect women so if he really was a pervert and didnβt care about what his foster father taught, then perhaps he would act more like Absalom. However, (again setting the comical aspects aside), I think Sanji himself knows where to cross the line when it really comes down to women. Most likely Zeff wouldnβt approve if Sanji really thought that women are just objects of lust and Sanji probably doesnβt want to disappoint (even unconsciously) someone who saved him from certain death and raised him as his own child.Β
Only Oda-sensei knows completely his character and knows the answers but Sanjiβs behavior makes me wonder that what if actually at some point he has created kind of an βalter egoβ to protect himself? What if he built himself a personality full of confidence so no one would see that deep inside, there is a fragile boy and a wounded man?
Well, this is all just speculation so itβs hard to say whether there is any truth behind these thoughts or not but shortly said, Sanji is a great character and there are definitely reasonable reasons for his behavior, in general. However, he indeed is stuck in these ero kappa- gag and itβs sometimes a shame indeed that some (potentially shippy) moments are ruined by those weird faces or when he goes too lustful but on the other hand, it might be just Odaβs way to keep the seriesβ focus on the main points instead of romance
Itβs really hard to believe that Sanji would actually be a pervert as in the term is officially described but once again, itβs all about interpretation.
