I pan handled from the end of 2017 to the middle of 2018 and here 10 of my notes

1. The Midwest has the most caring racists. The amount of sleeping bags and hot chocolate was surprising and heartwarming, the amount of racism was alarming.

2. People love to give you stuff in Las Vegas

3. Christians love to record themselves giving you a water bottle or a slice of pizza. This is a trap they are going to talk to you about god, and yes some (all) think you are homeless because you are a sinner

4. Most teenaged panhandlers look older than they are (dirty, stressed). Remember they're kids. Most aren't drug addicts. Most are abused for one thing or another. Most of the time it's for being queer.

5. Dont trust RV people ever

6. Dont sleep anywhere where you won't hear people coming and wake up. Trash, sticks, whatever makes noise when people rustle through it. Car camping is so much better.

7. Cops aren't people, they're some strange demon sent to fool you with riddles and drag you away. Treat them like the Fae

8. No one gives handouts in the Northeast

9. No one calls 911 if a homeless person is ODing in California

10. Humanity is so much more about love and connectedness than any of us can understand. Sometimes you have to take advantage of that to eat.

catherine might be the first game changer player who understood the assignment, immediately failed the assignment, figured out the assignment better, told everyone else the assignment, and then failed multiple times cause she truly cannot describe pictures (or name songs). player of all time. i love seeing someone who clearly gets and loves game changer and is just plain bad at games. representation for all of us.

What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?

It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.

My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂

I'm not trying to say gender bending and race bending characters is equal but all this does remind me of when I was in an amateur production of Macbeth playing Banquo and the director specifically wnated to cast a woman as Banquo. First I thought it was an attempt at diversity having more than 2 female named characters, but then he said he wanted to turn banquos death scene from and off stage death, to an on stage death and rape scene to "make the world seem more brutal". Funny how casting a woman in the role suddenly made him want to brutalize the character 😐

privileged demographic artists genuinely think it's profound btw. antiracists/feminists/etc. can rage and scold about it all we want but the genuine truth is that when you grow up inside the bubble of systemic bigotry and propaganda but still in a liberal sensibility, you intellectually understand that everyone is equal but you don't actually internalize the full experience of other groups' humanity. you attempt to treat people of color or women or lgbt groups with respect because you know that's moral but you don't engage with the diversity of their experiences and so you don't know them, and they remain othered in your mind in all these seemingly minute ways that add up to an unconscious segregation from you the objective cultural understander. the extent of your ability to truly place yourself in their shoes and imagine their humanity is limited to just that, unfounded imagination, and Yes They Are Indeed People 🙂 becomes the most urgent thing about them that you think needs emphasizing to your fellow majority demo because you consider that basic fact to be profound, because you still hover on edge of it. you don't at all consider that it's tired and offensive and perverse to the reality of the landscape of minority narratives because you aren't making art for Them, you're making it for racists and sexists and homophobes and transphobes and good moral liberal understanders like yourself who agree that it's profound and worth repeating.

which is why as righteous and earned as it is, scolding these people has almost zero effect because they truly think that their intentions and impact are noble and to simply portray marginalized groups as people without balls and chains attached to them would not constitute fighting the phobias and the isms, and they'll dismiss criticism because you're just one overzealous perspective and it's ungrateful for you not to appreciate their allyship.
