Yes. More than anywhere else
siblings siblings siblings
Water tribe siblings !!!
made this edit with katara's original nose
i appreciate how well they manage to convey at the brutality of the prison while keeping it kid-friendly. like suki straight-up thinks a guard's gonna sexually assault her. the other guards are way too chill about sokka wanting to rough up a prisoner. the way the guard forces chit sang to bend in self-defense and then punishes him for it, the petty power-tripping of it all. what i'm saying is that it definitely works as a setting for my definitely not kid friendly old man yaoi
one of the other prisoners in the lineup is shirtless. why is that. and why not hakoda
it's kinda crazy that the guards are like "eh nobody interesting in this batch of new prisoners" when it includes the guy who led an invasion of the fire nation capital. isn't that like. a big fucking deal
like i'll buy that they don't care about him being the chief or the leader of the southern water tribe fleet, they assume the southern water tribe is small and unimportant, but like. direct assault on the capital. is the fire nation trying to cover up that there was an invasion at all?
then again i've said before that the southern water tribe fleet might've been mistaken for pirates bc they're small and scrappy so maybe "there might be a pirate" was about hakoda

it's so funny how sokka leans in when zuko talks about mai. omg you guys were DATING??? like sure they're on a suicide mission but he's excited to get some hot dating gossip!
(either that or he's surprised to hear that zuko dated a girl. "it wasn't that hard to leave my girlfriend" I Know What You Are)
my exciting birthday plans
Probably the funniest take on Ozai is that he's a "master manipulator". Guys, this is the same man who thought asking his abusive father nicely to make him heir would actually work. He's got all the subtlety of a hammer; where do you think Zuko gets it from?
And yeah, I know someone's going to point out how Ozai manipulated his children, but like, that's the thing. They're his children. Manipulating someone who is entirely under your control and does not have enough life experience to see through your bullshit isn't very hard.
Absolutely correct Ozai take. Turns out it doesn't take brains to be a monster.
@muffinlance is so right. Except instead of a journalist, it would literally be Sokka sitting at the end of the table for a war council, wearing his fake moustache and calling himself Wang Fire.
i know i said this before but god i love natla azula mai and ty lee. like they weren't the MOST sexualized teen girl characters in animation but it was definitely there with azula's occasionally-seductive voice and ty lee's midriff-baring outfit and some shots in "the beach" and when so many adaptations decide to take female characters and make them more sexualized it's awesome that natla went actually these are teenagers, we're not putting them in revealing outfits, they're round-faced and adorable and you are going to really confront how they're kids trying to be adult warriors
like i always read azula's makeup and seductive voice as "kid trying to seem more adult" but honestly i'm not sure that was super explicit and you can very much tell she was voiced by an adult woman, she is definitely treated as this ~seductive evil woman~ by a certain type of fan and it is unequivocally a good thing that natla decided to ignore that and depict her as an actual young-looking teenage girl

I wanted to make a modern Atla AU and here are some concepts and character sheets. Instead of books 1, 2, 3 I was thinking about making it take place in three highschool years, where the gaang finds each other through different circumstances. I also aged Toph and Aang up bc 12 is just way too young to hang out with Highschoolers.
Maybe Iāll write a Fic for this if I find the time. Who knows
