the right thematic moment for a Black Widow solo movie is right after Winter Soldier. She’s blown all her covers and is counting on time to figure out a new one. She’s not joining Fury to go root out the remains of Hydra, she’s not joining Steve and Sam on their quest to save Bucky, she’s going on a selfish journey of self discovery, right after she loses more than maybe anyone else (except Fury maybe?) in the movie, leaking her whole history to the world

What needs to come next, obviously, is a story where Natasha can square this movie with her future. CA:TWS ends on a very similar note as The Avengers, with them going their separate ways but with the promise that when they’re needed, they’ll be back. How does she get to that, though? “When I joined SHIELD, I thought I was goin’ straight… but I guess I just traded in the KGB for Hydra”

This is where a solo project slots in! Natasha on her own, trying to define who she is apart from these Organizations that have shaped her. Natasha’s past finally public. We needed a nemesis here, someone she’d wronged who could only come after her now because of the file dump, someone to make her question who she is and what she should do next—something like the Edmonson/Noto run would stun here—where the end of the story is, of course, her independence from spycraft and decision to commit to the Avengers full time

Natasha’s entire life was spent in service of others – first for the Russian government, then SHIELD, then the Avengers as a more independent group. She was dedicated to protecting the greater good, even when those in charge were revealed, over and over again, to be pursuing more selfish ends. She abandoned political structures when they failed that purpose, but she never abandoned humanity or those who had earned her loyalty. She threw herself in front of so many bullets, literal and metaphorical, to protect people.

Her experiences may have made her cynical and pragmatic, but they never broke her determination to do the right thing. And she did it to the very end.

This has been said before by people better at articulating their opinions than me, but the bad reception Black Widow got from male MCU fans is about so much more than just the simple concept that it's a superhero movie starring a woman, but the fact that it's so clearly a film by women for women. It's in all the little things, like all the amazing braids sported by the female characters instead of having them constantly fight with their hair down, Yelena and Natasha being excited about the vest and all its pockets, zero sexualisation of any of the Widows, the forced hysterectomy being discussed matter-of-factly, and the women getting to wear minimal to no make-up in settings where that makes sense. But it's also in the big things, like the story centred around the epidemic of girls being subjected to human trafficking with a theme of reclaiming your anatomy and freeing other female victims, both others and your own.

Obviously this doesn't mean that every single woman on earth is automatically gonna identify with and like the movie, that's an impossible achievement. But it is a movie that's so much more than pandering, and these geeks are just completely incapable of inserting themselves into a point of view different from their own.

the joy Yelena has for her pockets (which is so cute and tragically heartbreaking) alone shows this cos lord knows women's stuff lacks pockets and a brainwashed spy knowing this speaks volumes.

plus the piercings being objectively a hinderence to their fighting but still kept- honestly cherry on the top and not just because it highlights their desire for bodily autonomy; general desire to control their inner and outer perceptions (plus it looks cool).
