Wait...that kinda means Martin accidentally out maneuvered The Web. Annie said that Martin (as a fellow introvert) acted more sweet and innocent than he actual is and I hope everyone caught that as far back as season one but if you didn’t he spelled it out with Elias and Peter. Martin is actually kind and empathetic but the dark side to empathy is manipulation but you know (sorry) what string to pull to get certain result. So Martin slipped a little dark empathy here and there by manipulating everyone but particularly Jon to win him over. He filled every gap Jon had in his life with himself, Jon straight up hated Martin and poetry and I’m pretty sure he’d prefer a cigarette over tea. He has a jealous, confrontational, and sarcastic streak that slipped out when he’s either not around Jon (before they became a couple) or when he’s highly stressed. If he was a bit more malicious you could get away with calling him controlling, but then Tim and Jon died and Martin went from ruthlessly presuing a crush to having to deal with being one of a few survivors to a tramatic event. Even Annie said her plans really stopped when Martin fell deeply into the Lonely that’s all the way into season 4 up until that point I think Martin really had more of a connection to The Web than Jon, he still wanted Jon for himself until Jon woke up Martin was still manipulating Peter by feigning complete ignorance because his goal at that point was death not saving the world. Then Jon came back and Martin went from simply feigning ignorance to keeping Peter’s attention on him and honestly I think it was at this late date that Martin’s crush turned into love he wasn’t trying to get Jon to like him anymore, he wasn’t jealously steering away perceived rivals (Basira and Melenie and Helen kinda) he just genuinely with no other motives wanted to protect Jon. Her plans for Martin would have worked up until then because Martin’s subtle manipulations and Jon’s near constant traumatic events left Jon pretty dependent on Martin but rather than claiming his prize Martin voluntary following The Lonely (arguably deeper that expected with a accidental push from Elias showing him how his mother felt). Martin choosing not to go to Jon after he woke up, was the 1st unraveling of the Webs plans and Jon willingly entering The Lonely was the final nail because they both choose the other over the benefits of the Fears. All of Martins plans could have come to fruition if he went to Jon in the hospital, and Jon could have “eaten” his fill had he just went with Elias plan and embrace The Beholding. Killing Martin after all that wouldn’t be killing someone’s lover, it wouldn’t send Jon into a blind rage, it would be severing his last connection to anything, Jon would have marched right back to the tower and joined The Eye.
