WITCH ARMY RANKING SYSTEM IN MOTHERLAND FORT SALEM - AN OVERVIEW
Season 2 of Motherland Fort Salem is over so I decided to make a chart of the Ranking System of the Witch Army after two seasons.
@smallfrost have a post explaining the Ranking System in Motherland Fort Salem back in Season 1 and it is very deep. I also use their work as a reference while making mine.
Check out their post if you want a better understanding on this subject, the link is below.
Feel free to let me know your thought and theory!
Quarterhorn in season 2
Sekhmet/Union of Earth & Sky
I love mythology, so I wanted to read up a bit on the subject and I think Sekhmet is such an interesting choice for the coven name. I mean, we know all covens are named after war goddesses (as per Abigail in 2x02):
(Which, by the way, is dope.) War gods in general are associated with violence and death, but Sekhmet is depicted as particularly evil. She was created by Ra, with the sole purpose of destroying mankind, since Ra thought they were conspiring against him. At the last moment, however, he changed his mind and tricked Sekhmet into getting extremely drunk to let her bloodlust subside. (He accomplished this by colouring beer red, to make it look like blood. He spread it across the land and Sekhmet, thinking it was blood, drank it all.)
The point is, there is this element of pure bloodlust associated with her image. Some kind of pure evil. Ancient Egyptians that worshipped her, did so in hopes of appeasing her and preventing disasters and dangers from happening to them. One thing she’s especially held responsible for, is the spread of infectious disease, like plague. Which, in the context of the witch plague in Motherland, is very interesting. It might suggest that the witches themselves are responsible for the creation of this witch plague, even if they’re not aware of it.
Because she is the creator of disease, she is also able to cure these diseases. She is often depicted with an ‘Ankh’ in her hand, which represents life. This symbol is also present in the Sekhmet hall in Motherland (although it is upside down):
Priests of Sekhmet were therefore often highly regarded as surgeons. The point here being that there is this strong sense of ambivalence in this goddess, that I think fits the show very well. I made an earlier post about how I think the witch plague could be the anti-Mycelium (here), and I think we can see this kind of balance again in the mythology surrounding Sekhmet. The difference however, is that using Sekhmet as a coven name highlights the ambivalence between good and evil. Especially since it relates directly to plagues. The cure for a disease might be found in its origin.
Also, small side note: Sekhmet is strongly linked with fire as well. In the sense of the extreme desert heat, but also in the sense of literally breathing fire. It could be a nod to the Spree workings that use fire, maybe.
To add to all of this, the union of Earth and Sky is also very prevalent in ancient Egyptian mythology, which made me think about what Hearst said in 2x10.
In ancient Egyptian mythology, there is Geb, the god of the earth, and Nut, the goddess of the sky. They’re siblings, both children of Shu (god of air) and Tefnut (goddess of moisture). Of course, they were not just siblings, but also lovers. That apparently loved each other so deeply, that they were locked in an eternal sexual embrace. This annoyed the hell out of their grandfather Ra, who asked Shu to separate them. So, he did:
He held Nut above him and left Geb on the ground. So, Shu created the atmosphere which allowed for life as we know it. Nut’s hands and feet represented the 4 cardinal points of the world and helped Shu maintain the separation of earth and sky. They were called the “Pillars of Shu”. Geb took this separation really hard: his tears formed the oceans and he eventually married his mother to separate her from his father, as revenge.
Going back to what Hearst said in 2x10: the union of Sky and earth must be prevented. In the myth of Nut and Geb, it is said that originally, they were locked so tight together that no life could be possible. So, their separation made life possible in the first place. This would make me assume that their union would destroy life again. In the same myth however, Nut does get to come down to Geb at night, which just causes darkness. Finally, when there were storms during the day, it was believed that Nut was closer to Geb as well. It remains unclear what will happen when this union happens, but it certainly doesn’t seem to be good. Not for anyone (except Nut and Geb). I have been assuming that, in Motherland, this union is something we would want to happen, simply because the Camarilla don’t want it to happen. But what if it really is something terrible for both witches and civilians?
Can we have season 3 now? Please?
How to be the best Spree agent worst Spree agent… ever
A 101 guide by Scylla Ramshorn; Edit by Anacostia Quartermain
1. Find your target and befriend them. Know their weakness and exploit it.
Edit: Fall in love with your mark. Show everyone how whipped you are for her, and let them know how she’s your weakness—so much so that they use her in the end to break down your walls.
2. Disguise and discretion is everything. Have many faces ready to change into.
Edit: Change faces or use work out in the open, where literally anyone can see. Oh, and be careless while you’re at it. Examples: Stare at yourself in the mirror as you change faces in an enemy base, while waiting for your mark to show up at the last minute; Light up your face at an enemy base with guard patrols at the dead of night, or at a wedding event full of ‘enemies’; Talk to your boss on a public toilet without checking that everything is clear, then proceed to talk about your ‘nefarious’ plans about kidnapping someone (mention their name, too, by the way); Try to use working the moment you enter a Camarilla gathering.
3. Always be vigilant and be mindful of your surroundings. Be one step ahead of the enemy.
Edit: Be so clueless that you think you outsmarted your ‘enemy’ in letting you go after being captured, but you end up leading them straight to your headquarters. (Please also refer to previous guide and examples.)
4. Always be prepared for the worst and have a back up plan.
Edit: Charge head on without a plan and barely survive through the worst on pure luck and with the help of other better-prepared companions. Examples: Murder someone or make them commit suicide on broad daylight without so much as a cover up (and be saved by Spree cover up); Attend a Bellweather elite wedding event without invite (and get vouched for by girlfriend); Sneak up on a Camarilla member and end up being the one snuck up on (and be saved by Anacostia -_-); Enter a Camarilla facility through the front door (and be saved by Willa); Leave the door open as you try to go through enemy’s surveillance (and be saved by Willa… again).
5. Don’t blow your cover, no matter what.
Edit: When all else fails, use your real identity as a diversion even though the odds are against you. Confess you’re a witch (a Spree one, at that) and proceed to survive on pure luck… again. (You may also use this tactic to sass your interrogator when you’ve been captured. -_-)
6. Never reveal your emotions. Be stoic. Have self-control.
Edit: Freak out inwardly AND outwardly every time you did something dodgy and when you get caught (like when trying to lie to your girlfriend after you’ve indirectly killed your ex, or when making small talk after killing someone’s husband and getting caught exiting the house). And of course, gay panic every time you’re near the love of your life. Screw having no emotions. Give her heart eyes and make sure everyone sees how much of a simp you are. (Please refer to guide number 1.)
7. Keep your mind on the mission. No distractions.
Edit: Try to abort mission the moment you see your ex, who’s still the love of your life and still looking ever so gorgeous with her really cool hair. Examples: Stare at a picture of your ex and pine away even before the mission starts; Have flashbacks as you walk through the mall where you murdered civilians, and be so distracted with your feelings of remorse that you failed to see an ‘enemy’ spying on you until she showed herself on the podium -_-. (Please also refer to previous guide and examples.)
8. Don’t be suspicious. Know where to hide or flea, in case of worst case scenarios.
Edit: In the midst of chaos, stay and listen to your ex as she makes a speech mentioning you—all while hiding behind someone and looking suspicious as hell. Then after that, proceed to stare at each other for a second before disappearing. Oh, and leave a crumb (like a picture), just to affirm your being there.
9. Have sleight of hand. A skill in thievery might come in handy.
Edit: Be so obvious that you want to steal something by staring and pining at said object, and then get caught not even a minute after stealing it.
10. Be an adorable sass to manipulate people into loving you even though you’re a murderous and evil Spree agent.
Edit: No arguments.
End.
W ell, that was that. Wouldn’t it be funny if Anacostia had actually been watching Scylla since the beginning and was witnessing all her epic fails as a Spree agent? And those are one of the factors why she knows she can sway Scylla into changing paths? Lol. Farfetched, I know. Oh well… I had fun procrastinating and writing this. Gotta get some shuteye now. Can’t wait for the season 2 finale.
Motherland Fort Salem | 2x09 "Mother of All, Mother of None"
Thoughts about the witch plague
So, I’ve been thinking a lot about the witch plague in Motherland: Fort Salem and why it is... like that. What if, for all intents and purposes, it is the anti-Mycelium? I think it would really fit into the world that the show has built so far and might be what the Mycelium was alluding to in 2x07 when talking about a “great war” that’s coming.
Okay, so:
1. The design of the witch plague just reminds me very strongly of the Mycelium. Like, look at the tendrils and the general webbed structure:
Of course, one is light and the other is dark, which seems symbolic as well.
2. We know that the witch bomb only affects civilians and the witch plague only affects witches. This suggest a similarity in the way they operate, recognizing the biological difference between witches and civilians.
3. We learned in 2x09 that the Mycelium was created by Alder’s grief, can we say that the witch plague was created by the Camarilla’s hatred? Or specifically their leader’s hatred? I would love to know more about the creation of it, and its evolution. The witch plague is obviously not a normal virus, or something similar. It seems to have a supernatural element to it, and seems to represent this pure hatred. I wonder how much the Camarilla are able to control it. I would argue that they don’t, really. They are able to contain it in simple glass (for now), but they don’t direct it, they just release it and let it do its thing.
4. Both entities are sentient to some extent. The Mycelium has motivations and agency, and is therefore clearly sentient, but with the witch plague it’s not necessarily as clear, but it does seem likely. We do know that it can perceive any nearby witches and will actively pursue them, like in 2x06 when it tries to attack Alder behind glass:
Or during the attack on the train in 2x05 where it seems to pursue Adil and Khalida.
So, if the witch plague can be seen as the anti-Mycelium, what does that mean? Can a civilian link with the witch plague like Raelle is linked with the Mycelium? That would be absolutely terrifying. I want to see it. What I think is interesting is that when Khalida was affected by the witch plague in season 1, it was contained within her for the most part. In any case, it didn’t spread like wildfire, which we’ve seen happen in season 2. Additionally, then it could be cured by Raelle/the Mycelium, which wasn’t the case in 2x07. So this thing mutates, fast. I’m just wondering if the Mycelium can grow at the same rate, as it’s opposite? And what would trigger this growth? Raelle dying? The witchbomb killing civilians and taking over their bodies?
Now that it has been revealed in 2x09 that the Mycelium is made up of the souls of dead witches, does that mean that it gets stronger when more witches die? If that’s the case, is the witch plague made up of dead civilian souls? Did the spree inadvertently make the witch plague stronger with their terrorist attacks?
Overall, I think I like this idea because it has the potential to subvert this rigid Good versus Evil theme, which we see in media all the time. You have these two forces, that survive by feeding on each other and therefore cannot exist without each other. While in most shows you would expect the message that good always prevails in the end, it’s clear that nothing is that black-and-white in Motherland Fort Salem. I hope we get to see nuance brought into these concepts, and how these forces will coexist in the end.
Side note: the Mycelium is obviously a mushroom, but what is the witch plague? It reminds me a little bit of algae, it seems... wet. Now, I don’t know a lot about biology in general, but it does seem that these two are in real life able to form a good symbiotic relationship. Maybe the two will combine at some point in the future of the show?
The fact Scylla is now related to a Celtic goddess as cool as the morrigan literally makes me so happy, and it makes so much sense!
Morrigan is seen as the Celtic goddess for death, destiny and war. Sometimes represented as a single deity, and sometimes as a trio of goddesses (some believe she was both at once), Badb, Macha and Nemain (or Anand), which reminds me of one very special trio to the show... It's also a nice callback to Norse and wiccan mythology in general, since both see three as a sacred number.
(I also have a theory that each of them represents one of our unit girls as rebirth, war and fertility but that's another post)
Morrigan can bring horrible deaths upon people but above all, she's the protector of the land, who strikes fear into the hearts of the enemies just as much as she fills heroes with great courage and strength. Legends say that you would see her washing your blood stained clothes as you were about to die, and that once the battle was over, Morrigan would fly through the field as a conspiracy (yup, that's the plural for it 😅) of ravens to collect the souls of the dead.
Very reminiscent of necromancy in general but also of the Mycelium, since we learned last episode that it collects witches souls just the same.
Morrigan's reign over battle gave her the title of "Ghost queen", and the very name Morrigan derives from a harsh translation of the celtic "queen of terror".
This all makes me think Scylla and her "whisper" will have a big role to play in the final battle. Maybe she will even become a leader of some sort to the Dodgers. Specially if we take the legendary battle of Magh Tuireadh into consideration, a well known war of celtic mythology that featured the gods and goddesses against the Fomorians, who were described to be horrible, cruel monsters who only wished to kill (reminds me of someone, but idk 🤔).
According to the myth, Morrigan meets her love (Dagda, who is also referred to as her husband and I might even write a whole post on the correlations he has to Raelle later bc it's surprisingly a lot) on Samhain and they have a "tryst" over the river Unius right before battle.
(Dagda is an immortal God that represents magic, protection and wisdom and can control the ways of life and death? Where have I heard that before... 🤔)
After they do the deed, Morrigan promises to summon all the magicians of Ireland (cofcofdodgerscofcof) to bring an end to Indech, the Fomorian king. She even says, and this is a quote: "I'll take the blood of his heart and the kidneys of his valour". And bitch did JUST that, she even came to the same river later along with handfuls of Indech's blood to dump into the water (lord knows why)
(We all know if anyone on this show is gonna be that much of a savage, it's the murder nugget)
It's told that during the battle, Morrigan sung a song over the battlefield in her raven form that immediately turned the tide in their favor, since the Fomorians started throwing themselves at sea. Again, almost TOO on the nose 😅 it makes me think Eliot had this correlation in his head all along even before the show started since he just straight up gave her Morrigan's mind control powers.
I don't really know what all this means for the series finale or S3 but I hope with all my heart and soul that Scylla's gonna live her best mythkin life as a reincarnation of a war goddess and tear the camarilla's hearts out, and she's gonna do it all with the help of her new friend and her military wife.
Heads up
Hi there! I used to be a Tokyo Ghoul blog, until I wasn’t into it anymore. I have been inactive on here for a few years, but am now planning on just using this blog for all shows/things I am interested in (which is mostly Motherland: Fort Salem at the moment). Will keep the profile picture, though, I love it. So if you see this on your dash, just know that there won’t be any Tokyo Ghoul coming from me anymore :)
Do with that info what you will, unfollow or stick around, and enjoy the rest of your day/evening/night!
