there's also the argument of how pop culture used to be the trickle down from high culture for the longest time but now it's an ouroboros eating itself as access and willingness to engage with high culture have been systematically destroyed and diminished through the last decades so your popcorn flick moviemaker now only gets inspiration from other popcorn flicks when their foreparents used to actually read literally and see art of all kinds and your pop musicians used to listen to all sorts of new and old music rather than just their contemporaries/competition and maybe this absence of any sort of culture outside of our easy algorithms is why everyone's so defensive of what they passively consume and so attached to it as a part of their identity but that's a discussion for another day

Good design should speak for itself, and I feel like Nolan's Odyssey fails at that. Why is Telemachus in viking garb? Why is Penelope, queen of Ithaca, so drab? Why is there a viking drakkar? Why pants? Why the lack of color? It can't even be answered by the classic: "it's realism" because that's obiously not the approache. Because it looks somber? Because Nolan needs a lack of color to convey a grittier/darker vibe? Because he is colorblind? Fine, that explains the colors (or lack thereof). But why the viking drakkar in the Odyssey?

I think Nolan is unimaginative and that's the end of the discussion. None of those questions can be ansewered because he didn't think about it. The costumes are shit because he doesn't care about costume. This mythical time and place looks boring because he is uncreative. Nolan cannot write women because he doesn't see their interiority and doesn't want to even imagine it. If he did wonder, he would have at least tried. But he doesn't. People who cannot think outside of their field of "what's known" are unimaginative, uncreative and uninteresting.
