Imagine yourself on this rock formation... It's like from Norway or Ireland, nah! It's Mt. Ulap of Itogon, Benguet.

The peak rises 1,846 meters above sea level and has 4/9 difficulty level. It was a cold 17 degrees Centigrade morning when we arrived at Sitio Ampucao, Itogon, Benguet. You may settle registration fees and guides here at the baranggay hall. The group hired a van from Manila to avoid public commute and to lessen travel time. We left Pasay around 2100H and arrived at Ampucao around 0500H in the morning. Did I say they offered free native coffees? Haha! The residents are so generous here. Free CR, free shower, free food.

After settling all permits and registrations, we started trekking around 0700H. You'll be treated with cool weather and hundreds or even thousands of pine trees along the trail, just like Baguio minus the overcrowded residentials. The views on the upper part are awesome too! I'm out of superlative words to explain. I can see the lowlands of Central Luzon, on adjacent side the Mt. St. Thomas and Baguio, the Sierra Madre mountain range and to the north the majestic Cordillera mountain range. From covered pine trees trail you'll pass the open trail grassland, just like in New Zealand. Wild cows roam the area but beware 'coz they chase anyone according to local guides. Then comes the steep rocky trail, now you really need those balancing and scrambling skills. Some parts of this trail is a steep cliff on both sides.

Arriving the summit is an achievement or somehow we were mitigated. There's this rock formation slightly attached to the solid summit where you can pose for an awesome picturesque view at the background. (Dayum, somebody draw an Illuminati sign at the rock) Who would have thought that there's a place like this here in our island nation. After some photo ops we descended back to jump-off, took a shower and headed back to Baguio for a bountiful dinner at Good Taste Restaurant, then finally back to Manila.

I thought we've save a lot from this day hike. We only paid P1200 all-in (food and transportation) to Mam Jho Esteban the organizer. Tranportation from Manila to Baguio normally costs P500 so that would be a thousand bucks already back and forth. I really suggest a private transportation here because the jeepneys to Baguio are also limited.

Yo! I’m back. It’s been the longest time since I last wrote something here. I’ve been too busy both in school and work and sometimes too lazy to write something down because of slow internet connection and procrastination. :D

Anyway, I’ll post my missed August to early October adventures soon. But for now, here’s one of my latest.

Since my Day Hike Warriors group didn’t make it, I invited JM (my metal-kor friend) to this mountain for a day hike adventure. He was with his college friends Jeka & Eumie whom confirmed the night before the climb.

Mt. Binacayan is the twin peak of Mt. Pamitinan, they’re separated by Wawa Gorge and both are day hike-able, suitable for pabebe climb. 

The sun is on beast mode when we started our climb. That scorching heat of 10AM sun tho. XD It can’t hinder us to reach the summit. After passing the open assault trail we’re relieved by shaded trails of bamboos and other trees. The terrain is same as it’s twin peak, steep and jagged rocks covers the area. Don’t forget to bring gloves! ‘Coz none of us brought one. :D

Our drained body were mitigated upon arrival at the summit. We were wow-ed by the 360 panoramic views of Sierra Madre mountain range, Mts. Pamitinan, Hapunang Banoi, Ayaas, Parawagan and other nearby peaks and the lowlands of Montalban, Rizal. The river really adds some drama in the view, or I thought any bodies of water near the vicinity of a mountain. After some buwis-buhay shots we descended around 1400H, just in time as the blistering heat of the sun is unstoppable (I left my arm bands). As expected, exposed parts of the body are sun burned after the hike; happiness in exchange for tan lines LOL. We dip at the serene Wawa River to cool down our body before munching at the jump-off.

We’re back to the urban life after spending a day chasing butandings in Oslob and adrenaline producing canyoneering in Badian. We’ll explore and gonna eat mouth watering native foods here at the Queen City of the South:

First stop of our city tour, the Basilica de Sto. Nino and Magellan’s Cross at the heart of the city. And there’s always this Island Souvenir Shop anywhere in the Philippines where we bought some pasalubongs and souvenir shirts. 

Next stop, Fort San Pedro. Since museum has an ongoing repair we just took some snaps at the entrance then headed to the Taboan Market. After an hour or two of price bids and buying of chorizos and other native Cebu foodstuffs, we’re already starving. We feed our empty stomach at Casa Verde, their glistering platter of Brian’s Rib is so heavenly! :3

 Walk - jump - swim - float - repeat.

Dead-tired after chasing the gentle giants in Oslob, now we’re heading to the town of Badian in western part of Cebu province to experience this so called canyoneering adventure. But I guess I need to take a nap first ‘coz we’re sleep deprived since last night’s flight from Manila to Cebu.

Canyoning (aka canyoneering) is traveling in canyons using a variety of techniques that may include other outdoor activities such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping, abseiling (rappelling), and swimming.

I was awaken by sun rays hitting my face.The group is already preparing for the canyoning adventure and I was so drained that I can’t get up from the car. After the orientation and find-the-suit-that-fits-you game we ride the habal-habal to the jump-off located in Baranggay Kanlaob. 

To jump start the adventure you have to take a leap at this 5 feet waterfalls; for safety purposes you have to wear the mandatory life vest and aqua shoes. Without hesitation I took the first jump. XD The big 5 then followed me: Raz, Em-em, Sarah, Tito and Kiko. Uhm, the others went to the safer ground JK! Maybe they’re not yet ready for a YOLO jump. Anyway, we did the usual downstream canyoning the latter is doing it in reverse (starting from the kawasan Falls.)

Such a breath-taking place hidden deep within the jungles of Badian town. The canyon river is flowing with crystal clear bluish water. You’ll have to trek the river, scramble on rock formations, dive from cliffs and even waterfalls, swim and just float on the downstream river flow and - repeat. After about 3-4 hours of canyoning we reach the first falls, and from here you have to plunge 50 ft high gawd! We did it of course. There’s also a monkey swing that falls you to the water again. Or you can just stare at the awesome view of the waterfalls. XD

We munch and finally walk to the second falls, they ride the raft and take some snaps but I’m so drained already that I need to take a nap at the cottage. Oh hey I met Squirtle on the way home, I took him a snap shot.

We spent P1200 for this adventure. Inclusions: habal-habal ride to jump-off, meal, guide, registrations, wet shoes and life jackets. Last convo I heard at the van was that we’re heading to Moalboal. Cebu Adventure continues...

Mt. Pamitinan is one of the twin peaks located in Rodriguez (formerly Montalban), Rizal. Separated by Wawa Gorge the latter is Mt. Binacayan. The peak boasts it’s rocky limestone terrain and the Wawa dam itself.

So I found this photo of a mountaineer hanging herself at the edge of a cliff while browsing my Instagram, geotagged Mt. Pamitinan. I googled the peak’s location and sample itineraries then posted an event on my facebook account. The hike was not pushed thru until recently Nawie commented on my post that she wants to hike the peak.

The group (Nawie, Echan, Abmelaine (hope I spelled your name correctly), Ford, Mira, S’Mike, S’Edrian, M’Gerielyn meet at McDonald’s Pala-pala around 0300H to 0400H. We fetch Boss Mhike and Jang at Pasay. We ride a bus to Coastal Mall (P30+) then transfer to a city bus (P40) drop-off at Farmer’s Cubao. Van (P50) bound to Rodriguez accompany us to the town proper, actually until Wawa Dam for additional (P30). Later we realize it was a rip-off! The fare from Rodriguez town is just P10 for a trike ride and P8 for jeep. Moving on, there’s a P2 entrance fee at the DENR. Guides are mandatory to scale the mountain: one guide per 5 pax. Kuya Herminio and the other one (forgot his name) were the assigned guides. There’s no fix rate but we gave P1000 to them P500 each later.

After a quick orientation we start trekking past 0900H in the morning; passing a hanging bridge then gradual assault to verdant forest. An enchanting Balete tree will greet you along the trail followed by limestone walls. You’ll then proceed to a steep jag rocks terrain. Gloves and presence of mind are essential here as some rocks are pointy and sharp enough to lacerate body parts. The trail is a bit steep too from this area.

 It’s already 1100H when we arrive at the place dubbed as first summit. This is the spot I saw on IG where there is a small crack on rock formation serving as platform where a mountaineer hang herself at the edge of the cliff. XD Later we scaled the second summit. From here you’ll be astonished by the 360 degree view of the vicinity. The Rodriguez lowlands, the twin peak Mt. Bincayan, the Wawa Gorge and dam and the Sierra Madre mountain range. Past 1500H when at long last we reach the end of trek after an hour and half of descent. We quench our thirst with refreshments sold at the dam area and headed to the jump-off to have a quick shower (since the water at the dam is a bit murky).

That feeling of accomplishment after the climb despite of being drained physically.  Haha! Another summit marked check on bucket-list, more soon. Credits to God for the fine weather, for the opportunity to pursue our avocation, for every new friends I (we) meet and for the safe climb.

“Oh! These vast, calm, measureless mountain days, inciting at once to work and rest.”

This popular day trip destination is my fave hang-out place whenever I feel like “the mountains are calling and I must go.” Every-buddy knows the drill: to be at the meet-up place McDonald’s Pala-pala from 0500H to 0600H. Jen confirmed to join with an invite Josh, Mariel my CISCO classmate also confirmed she’s with her friend invite too Jessalyn and lastly, Yeng my former colleague.

We started trekking a lil bit late 1020H. Business as usual for the baranggay, they’re still implementing the mandatory guide (see price below), even though we already know the trail. You’ll still find locals selling buko juice along the trail as well.. sigh I only got 1L of water. After 3-4 hours of ascent we arrived at the rockies 1400H. The spot is a bit crowded with folks enjoying the holiday break. We took some groupfies, chomp our meals and enjoyed the familiar scenic view. Some vegetation are turning brownish color mainly due to blistering heat of the sun.  We descended and reach the jump-off around 1730H, just in time for a sip and taste of halo-halo.

Browsing the pictures at the camera gives me a deja vu. Actually the whole time i sit at the rocks, take some snaps and stare the views is a deja vu. Anyway congrats to Mariel, Josh & Jessalyn it’s their first time to climb. *Drums roll!* to Yeng for finally reaching the rockies, nyahaha! You know what I mean.

What’s gonna work? TEAMWORK!

Uhm... just an overnight bonding with Hardware Support team mates. Boodle fight, videoke and night swim. Also a farewell to JJ for her resignation. D:

The main pool was awful, the water smells like stagnated for a long period of time like what you can smell on a fish pond. Geez! Aside from that the place is so-so, there are four small cottages and one roofed event place for videoke with a small kitchen.

“Maraming lakad, init, pagod, sugat, ligaw atbp. pero marami din namang bagong natuklasan, natututunan at kaibigan...”

A massive composite of rocky columns surging on the mountainous area of Maragondon, Cavite. Mt. Marami according to locals was coined from ‘marami’ meaning several or many attributed to several rock formations found on the summit. 

The group met at Jollibee - Trece Martires, rode a jeepney to Naic (P22) then trike to Magallanes town (P350) finally another trike to Brgy. Ramirez (P20) the jump-off point. There is no registration fee for the hike just log at the Baranggay hall and hire a guide. Manong Alfredo our guide lead the group: Ford, Johnvie, Rose Anne, Echan, Joemar and I. We started trekking around 0915H on a humid dry weather.

Somewhere in the middle of the trek. Ford and Joemar are lost, they followed a different path leaving us to wait for about an hour. :D We were delayed reaching the summit 1530H (Whew! That’s six hours of ascent). We are welcomed by an awesome lowland views of Cavite and Batangas at the summit. Hey that’s Mt. Pico de Loro on the NE, Mt. Batulao and Talamitam on the S. I can see Mt. Makiling too on the far SE. Everybody knows the drill! Haha snap shots, time lapse, groupfies, selfies, etc time!

We ascended around 1630H to catch the last jeepney ride to Naic town sadly we reached the jump-off 1930H. We decided to rent a trike again (P400) back to Naic.

The trail is just easy one. Just prepare extra bottle of water and protection from scorching heat of the sun. You’ll be wow-ed by the view at the summit. I swear! Thanks God for another summit we conquered, new adventure buddies met and for the courage and strength to pursue our dreams. High five! :D
