[part 1] [part 3]
-> ATSUSHI NAKAJIMA
The tossing and turning from the person sleeping next to you jostles you awake, and you hurriedly rush to his side.
“‘sushi. Wake up!” Shaking his shoulders, your heart aches seeing the pained expression on his face, murmurs of nothingness leaving his lips as he remains trapped in another nightmare. You’ve never been able to successfully wake him up out of one, and since he’s never mentioned them to you before, you don’t say anything in the morning.
“Please wake up…” you hate seeing him like his, and wish with every part of you that he’d wake up just this once, because tonight’s nightmare seems worse than the ones before.
Atsushi suddenly shoots upwards, startling you, breathing heavily and tears threatening to spill out of his eyes.
“Atsushi. I’m right here. It’s okay.” You pull him into a tight hug, and he silently sobs into your shoulder. “Your nightmare seemed worse than normal tonight. Do you want to talk about it?” You already know his answer, but you decide to try the question anyway.
“I’m sorry, I’m interrupting your sleep, please don’t worry about me.”
“No, ‘sushi. I care about you. That’s why I’m awake.” Atsushi looks at you, and you can see in his eyes that he’s begging you to leave him because he thinks he’s not good enough for your love.
You know exactly what he’s thinking, but you also know that he’s wrong.
“It was the director again, wasn’t it.” You can tell your statement catches him off guard, his body stiffens in your embrace and he looks at you with wide eyes.
“How do you know about the director?”
“That’s irrelevant. I just want to help you forget about your past. You’re with me now, and I swear on my life that I will protect you from anything.” Atsushi’s confused, but he sort of understands.
All you want is for his nightmares to stop. You can tell the affect it’s having on him and his work, he shows up some mornings with heavy lidded eyes, slightly swollen from crying, lack of sleep evident in the way he carries himself.
“Please, y/n, don’t worry about me too much though, I don’t want to hold you down.” You press your lips against his, kissing him gently and resting your forehead against his own.
“I love you, Atsushi. I love you so much and that’s why I will always care, okay?”
“Okay.” You sit in each other’s arms for a moment longer, the silence comforting. Before Atsushi finally falls asleep again, you hear him murmur in your ear.
“But how did you know about my past… I never told you.” You don’t answer, and he falls asleep seconds after he speaks his mind.
Kissing his forehead, you cuddle into his chest and let out a satisfied breath.
“I’ll tell you one day. But for now, have a good sleep.”
-> AKUTAGAWA RYUNOSUKE
“How's your sister doing?” the words leave your lips before your brain can even process what you just said, and you await an answer from Akutagawa, who’s sitting on the couch next to you. You couldn’t help yourself, Gin just fascinated you so much and you honestly really wanted to be friends with her.
You were dating her brother, after all.
“My... sister?” Ryu doesn’t really know how to answer, he’s never told you about his sibling, so how should you know that he has one? Maybe you just got confused and it was an accident.
Screw it. You think. After all, I already slipped up so I might as well ask anyway.
“Yeah, Gin? How’s she doing? It’s been a while since I've seen her around.”
He’s completely at a loss for words. He understands the two of you are dating, but never has he mentioned his sister to you. He’s pretty sure he didn’t even tell her that you two were together. So there’s no reasonable explanation for how you know about Gin.
“Uh... she’s... alright I guess. I haven’t seen her for a while now too. We've both been busy...” He narrows his eyes at you, and you strike a look of false innocence.
“How do you know about Gin, y/n?” You shrug your shoulders, running full force with your lie.
“I dunno. I just figured cause you guys look alike, you have similar personalities...” you keep rambling, listing things that the Akutagawa siblings have in common.
“Alright, alright. I was just a little confused... that’s all.” He doesn’t really believe you, but he’ll let it slide for now because he trusts you enough to know you’re not hiding anything too severe from him. He also knows that one day you’ll explain to him what’s going on—you always do.
“Okay!” You grab your empty mug from the table, springing to your feet and sprinting off into the kitchen. Your heart races as you start to mindlessly clean the small mess from earlier, and you wonder if Ryu bought your lie. You doubt it, but all the same you know he’s not going to push it.
You just hope you don’t slip up again, otherwise he might just find out the truth.
-> YOSANO AKIKO
Sitting at her desk, Yosano quietly sifts through her paperwork, eyes occasionally drifting up to where you’re also at your desk, scribbling in your notebook, most likely out of boredom. The loud opening of the door startles everyone in the office, and Dazai along with Atsushi walk in. The pained expression on Dazai’s face is evident of some sort of injury, and Yosano sighs, standing as the two walk over.
“My wrist... can you fix it?” Your head snaps up from your desk, quick enough to see Yosano stiffen, trying desperately to mask her emotions but you can see the swirling emotions in her eyes as they stay fixed on Dazai’s sprained wrist.
“Fix it yourself.” You practically growl from your desk, looking at Dazai with anger.
“But it hurts so bad, and Yosano-sensei can just use her ability, no problem.” You slam your fist on the desk, causing him to jump, and you stand.
“I said no. Fix it yourself.”
“Y/n-” Kunikida tries to reason with you, but you cut him off.
“Akiko isn’t a machine. She's a human too and her only job isn’t to heal you. Especially when it’s just a stupid injury that you can fix yourself. If you were dying, sure, I might have pity on you, but right now? Go and bandage it up yourself.” Yosano looks over at you, wondering why you’re getting so defensive about something she’s never mentioned to you. She can feel the heavy weight of the butterfly clip in her hair, and she turns away from Dazai.
“Y/n’s right.” She expertly hides the shaking of her voice while she speaks, keeping her emotions well in check. “Just bandage it, make sure it’s tight enough that it holds the wrist in place, and don’t use it. It should heal in a week or so.”
“But-”
“No buts. Go.” Yosano points to the med room and Dazai sulks away, Atsushi following close behind. The office goes quiet, everyone surprised at your sudden outburst. You walk over to her desk and offer your hand.
“Let’s go talk for a bit.” She willingly accepts, and you take her up to the roof. The both of you sit quietly for a moment, watching the clouds slowly move across the sky, before she finally speaks.
“How did you know?” You continue to look forward, letting out a relaxed sigh.
“That doesn’t matter.” Reaching over, you grasp her hand, giving it a squeeze. “You weren’t made to just heal people. You’re human, just like the rest of us. And I think it’s hard for people to realize that because your ability is so easy to exploit.” You finally turn to look at her, leaning in and kissing her cheek.
“The only thing you need to know is that I love you for who you are as a person, Akiko. Not for your ability, as useful as it can be at times.” She smiles shyly, resting her forehead on yours.
“I love you too, and thank you.”
“If you ever need to talk about your past, don’t hesitate to come to me.”
“I’ll remember that.”
