a lot of children - especially mentally ill children - end up traumatized not because someone was specifically hurting them but because their needs weren’t being met, or because their problems weren’t being seen, or because they were rendered particularly vulnerable by other aspects of their identity, like queerness or race.

and it can be hard to look at your childhood and go “I was hurt” and also know that the hurt wasn’t deliberate. it’s uniquely painful to not have someone to blame.

you do not have to excuse the people who hurt you, even if it was unintentional. & acknowledging your own pain does not necessarily entail blaming them for it.

you are allowed to do what you need to do in order to recover.

We made it. If you’re reading this, you survived. I know sometimes that doesn’t feel like much, but I need you to understand how important that is.

The world would be less without you.

Laundry facts!

1. If you overfill the washer drum, it’s harder for clothes to get clean. Try to stay under the halfway mark if you can.

2. Many laundromats take cards or use apps these days, and it is a really easy way to get your stuff clean all at once. Plus you get to meet interesting people!

3. Sort by fabric type, not color. Sturdier fabrics tend to do damage to more delicate ones.

4. Wash on cold. The agitation gets the clothes clean, not the water temp.

5. For dish towels and cleaning rags: wash these separately, and add 1/4 cup of dish soap to the load. Laundry detergent is great, but if you’re anything like me, those dish towels have butter and olive oil and various and sundry other oils on them which makes it harder to get them clean.

ok but if letting your kid use a different name & different words & wear different clothing is scientifically likely to improve their health & happiness and lower their risk of suicide, whether or not they change their minds later….does it really matter whether you personally “get it”? does it even matter if you’re comfortable with it?

if you’ve got all this science telling you that letting your kid do these things is going to make them happier & healthier than not letting them….then just tell them it’s ok.

it’s not your kid’s job to be the child you wanted. it’s your job to make choices that allow them to be the happiest version of themselves. make sure your kid knows that you will love and support them no matter what gender they present as. make sure they know they don’t have to hide.

neurotypicals and even some nd people need to realise that, those psychology posts about lying are bullshit. i have adhd. i will not maintain eye contact. i will look around the room, be unable to sit still, fiddle, rub my nose and ears, blink a lot/blink too little (depending on where i am dosage-wise), add unnecessary details, randomly go off on tangents about related topics - everything that you think makes me out to be “telling lies” is just me being neurodivergent and attempting to communicate while you hold me to standards that are not correct for what my brain is like. i’m sorry but your sherlock ass can stop

The misconception that “people who do fidget, blink too much, look around a lot, etc. always have something to hide” made widespread by popular culture is something that can put people in serious trouble. I have ADHD and I’m always, without fail, stopped in airports for “random security checks”. No one else in my family ever is, it’s always just me and I’m pretty sure it’s because I can’t stand up still and move a lot in place.

It’s more of an inconvenience than anything else to me, they let me go fairly soon, which I suspect it’s because I’m white but I imagine people would be way more intrusive and possibly even dangerous to a person of color with ADHD in the same situation.

One of my kids gave me and my partner coffee mugs (we collect them) that say “Proud parent of two bisexual college students” and I love them so much!!! It’s exactly what I wanted! My partner wants to take his to work and wait for his office mates to notice. I’m gonna use mine every friggin day!

Dry brine your meats.

You won’t regret it.

And it’s very simple! Take meat out of the package and cover it with salt. I recommend kosher salt, but any large grain salt with do. Don’t use table salt. In fact, just stop buying table salt, it’s way too fine. Treat yourself and buy a small dish for kosher salt. Put the dish by your stove so you can reach it easily.

Back to dry brining!

Cover your cut of meat with salt. You can use just about any cut, but keep surface area in mind - the smaller the cut, the less time you need to leave it for .

Get a baking dish. I like to use my roasting pan - tall sides, handles, it’s a good dish. Cover the bottom of the dish with a layer of salt. Place your meat on it and then pour salt over the top. Cover as much of the meat as you can. Stick it in the fridge and let it sit. Small items (chicken thighs, individual steaks/chops) only need an hour-ish. Bigger items can sit for longer.

Once it’s done, rinse the salt off and pat it dry. Stick it back in the fridge for a little bit to dry the rest of the way.

Cook as originally intended! This method leaves you with crispy poultry skin and really nicely seared meat.

Do not add more salt while cooking!!!!! It’s already salty enough, I promise!

Actually life is beautiful because the sound I make while trying to breathe around hot food sounds like my dog trying to eat an apple. When I yawn my cat tries to put his face in my mouth like a little dentist man and when he yawns I put my finger in his obligate-carnivore trapzone and we both know he will not hurt me. When I do not fold my clothes, they do not hold it against me.

I am demonstrably sad, and lonely, and full of fear. But there are other people who will hold my hand, who will point out the hawk overhead, who will give you That Look in a public place. The other day at a coffee shop a child said "look! It's snowing!" so all of us strangers went to go look out the windows. It wasn't the first snow and it won't be the last but wasn't it lovely like that?

How wonderful to live in a world where birds and frogs both say beep! How wonderful to have an ocean of beautiful sharks with their dinosaur teeth! How wonderful the moon and her changing face, how wonderful the bees and their dancing to communicate, how wonderful shrimp and their forbidden layers of vision! How wonderful, you, and what you will give the world! The way we love things enough to spend entire blogs devoted to them? How people will let me explain my Pokemon team to them? How we will both jump at the scare in the movie, how we laugh so loudly, how it feels to give someone your baking? How wonderful to be alive. I am sorry for forgetting.

This is the process of getting better. With wonderful people and wonderful strangers and wonderful friends: I am getting better, slowly. Thank you, whoever you are. In some way, you've been wonderful, and left a wonderful place in the world to ripple out to me. In some small way - isn't it beautiful - I promise, you've been helping.

I’m going to say something that may seem a little “gross” if you’ve never experienced, depression, executive dysfunction, or disability. But this post isn’t for you.

This is for everybody who has watched their plates grow mold in the sink. Had no energy to even look at what’s in the back of the fridge. Had clothes get mildewey from sitting so long. Closed whole rooms because it’s the sight of how messy it is makes you feel worse. Can’t remember their last shower Just can’t summon the motivation to begin, because how can it ever end?

I see you. I see your struggle. You’re still a valid and valuable human being, and your difficulty caring for yourself is not a moral failing. You are not an evil person because of a struggle partially outside your control. I hope that you get help in the forms you need it, and can feel at peace in your space again.
