Her ears. Her tails. A youkai? He must have been seeing things. The stress of landing himself in this strange city was taking its toll in the form of hallucinations.
Hastily, he withdrew his glance and steeled his nerves. When he looked again, she would be as human as him. Hijikata turned and tensed even more when his plan failed. āThe hell is this place?ā
ā Another samurai... hmph. Though her last encounter had taught her lesson; acting aggressively would only frustrate her further in their presence. It was best to behave as she usually did around humans: reserved, polite, thoughtful. Even if she wanted to be anything but.
"I believe your sentencing is a bit off. Let us remove your 'the' and hand you an answer: This place... is hell." Teasing and picking on them wasn't out of the question, she hoped? This man was lost and she would to make it worse. "I am meant to be your guide, Okoi. I will lead you towards the road of sorrows, so you may face your greatest sins..."

Unwillingly to venture into areas unknown without being properly prepared, the prince made use of his only reliable source ā a small rat, his forever loyal knight, Leonidas.
And yet unfortunately for him, the usually reliable rat had come skittering back unhanded, visibly flustered about something ā honestly, had Leonidas not been a servant of his for years now? It was absolutely foolish, unthinkable even, that he would exhibit this sort of fear and come squeaking back to his master with nothing useful to report. Perhaps this absurd panic of his was the result of onset fears due to their abrupt placement in this strange landā¦Ā
Disgusting.Ā
And when heād seen what had startled the small creature, it only furthered his disappointment. Was it because his servant had not his entire legion of knights at his side, that he was to be shaken so easily just at the sight of another cat? He would have to punish for this sort of disgraceful behavior later.
"Pardon me. Is it not dangerous for a young lady to be walking alone by herself? And are we not of the same kind?"Ā The blonde asked as he extended a gloved hand toward the girl, fully expecting her to take it in turn.Ā
ā A mouse? A rat? A quick bite? Pests were not uncommon in this city. Nay, they were numerous and a nuisance, scurrying into and out of every nook and cranny there was. There was no reason to give chase to the pesky little thing then, to make it her game of the night before she headed back to sleep. But she was glad that she had. Glad was too light of a word; she was absolutely delighted to have followed the sweet little thing before skidding to a stop. A cat? The same as her? Not a pair of plastic ears or a strange furry hat but-- She couldn't help the wide smile that spread across her face as she answered him.
"How considerate... but you must forgive me for misleading you. I'm far stronger than I appear, there will be no need for worry if I come across any miscreants." Strong enough, at least. This city had taken a considerable amount of power from her claws and her transformations but there was still enough left that a stroll through the city gave her little reason to fear.Ā
"I would hope so! Or rather... your ears, your scent... whether you're a nekomata or bakeneko or what have you, I am pleased. Your presence here gives me far more comfort than you will ever know." Luckily she had noticed the extended hand before she had made the move to bow before him and accepted it happily, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"My name is Okoi-- ... hmm... My name is Miike. It's a pleasure to meet you."
Ā Ā Ā This one was feisty, that was for certain.
ā⦠A tall order, Okoi-san.ā
Ā Ā Ā Assassin still kept his cool presence, despite the otherās words. He held no ill will towards her. On the contrary, she was quite the lovely little thing. But, with a personality like that⦠she really wasnāt his type. Ah well.
Ā Ā Ā He wasnāt much of a fan of cats anyhow.
āIf I āknow whatās good for myselfā, you say? How curious. Iām tempted to ask you just how you know what so happens to be good for me, nowā¦ā
āFor what reason should I abscond for? Illuminate me."
Ā Ā Ā Narrowing his gaze slightly, as if focusing on the other, Assassin awaited any sort of sudden movements. He was both still, and prepared.
ā "Because I know your type! Always swiping those metal fangs, attempting to snuff out my life... I've yet to meet a single samurai who's ever had a modicum of good will in their bones." Sans Seijirou, perhaps. But with his minimal skill with the sword, could you truly call him such? Bless his soul, may he rest in peace never to become a stain as dark as this man.
"I doubt that you are the exception. How many of my kind have you killed with your sword? How many defenseless souls are now lost due to your cunning, Sasaki Kojiro?" Her tails flicked back and forth against the ground, aggravation swelling.
Ā "So do not bother visiting those temples. If you wish to send Buddha your prayers, I will grant you at least that much. My methods are far quicker and much more satisfying... there may be a pinch of pain but I'm certain that you can handle it."

ā⦠Ah. Old habits die hard, then.ā
Ā Ā Ā He couldnāt really relate, but, he sort of understood.
āHm⦠I canāt imagine mice in general are nutritious. Iāve never tried one, either. Canāt say I would particularly want to, reallyā¦ā
ā "Oh? Perhaps you should give them a try. I've never seen a human eat a rat. Sounds it would bring a bellyful of laughter. For this cat, at least, hehe!"
"Hm, yes.... maybe I should leave little sparrows at your doorstop as well? Add in some toads and perhaps some left over scraps and I'll give you a meal fit for a stray cat!"
"Oh?"
"You need some help? Even if you hadnāt asked, the look on your face says it all." Be it far from Ryoko to refuse a complete stranger help. Especially one that seemed so interesting.Ā
Besides the overall feel she got from the young womanās data, her need to see a weapon-shop also got Ryokoās attention. She either needed something for herself or for a friend. If it was the former, then she was a fighter.
"Well, if you want to look for weapons, we can try Sector 4 or Sector 5. 4 is the Cultural Sector, so they might have a lot of things on display, weapons included. But 5 is where you can buy basically anything in its shopping areas. Which will it be for you?"
ā Ā "Is it... t-that obvious?" Oh, how shameful! To display such weakness with her master's form. But the truth was the truth and being lost had Ā given her confidence a hard hit in the shins. But her request of assistance was about to pay off and that's all that matter. In an attempt to make herself apear more confident, she straightened her posture and smiled at the young woman.
"The cultural sector sounds as if it may better suit my needs. What I'm looking for.... Ā I believe it may hold enough historical significance to make an appearance there. Assuming it hasn't already been used."
Ā Ā Ā Ah. A stray cat, as it seems. And he had aggravated it, somehow.
Ā Ā Ā How cute, the man thoughtā watching her movements.
āHoh, is that so? It wasnāt my intention. I do believe Iāve no curse that draws misfortune upon every move I make, either⦠perhaps youāre mistaken?ā
Ā Ā Ā With a sly reply, Assassin smirked. What an odd sight this was, really. ⦠The mention of the supernatural was quite abundant, back during his timeā as were their presence. But in modern times, they had all seemed to fade away. Meager legends and ghost stories. But, before him now, one of those ghost stories was more than a ghost⦠the only ghost was him, really.
āIāve no business with you, my little thorned flower.ā
āAt any rate, I am Sasaki Kojiro. I am but a man, passing on by to visit the many Buddhist Temples around this area. Is that a crime?ā
Ā Ā Ā He did not reach his blade. But, he didnāt need to. Not yet, anyways. After all⦠he could retrieve it the moment she pounced.
ā "I am not mistaken. The ill do not often acknowledge the scourge they summon with every breath nor the cursed words they hack up like phlegm." His easygoing attitude pricked at her temper, threatening to burst her act of calm. But he made no move and she would refrain until then, no matter how annoying his words were--Ā
āIāve no business with you, my little thorned flower.ā
... could she take that back? The urge to turn him into a scratching post had risen.
"...Sasaki Kojiro. Hmph." Words hissed and ears flattened. What was said was an unfortunate truth; it didn't seem like he had done anything wrong ( though he most probably did. ) and she didn't have it in her right to stop him from sullying the temples. "...This thorned flower's name is Okoi, do your best to remember it! Though I suggest you turn back and head home, if you know what's good for you."
'Hm? Oh, no! That's okay.'
Some artists, those who painted masterpieces and sculpted gods out of dull clay, needed absolute quiet and concentration to do their work. Some artists needed weeks of alone time before they could even pick up a brush, a pen, a chisel. And some artists needed to be in the midst of the action ā for their strokes to come natural, for their faces and forms to really come to life, they needed good company, a lively atmosphere, anything to break the stillness.
Haruka was in the latter category. With the stranger by his side, already his hand was moving with more confidence, drawing becoming animated as he turned to look at her proper.
ā and she had the cutest ears! He stared for a moment, transfixed.
'I was just, um?' he began distractedly, eyes finally moving away and back to the scene in front of him. Not too far off, there were a number of kittens playing rough-and-tumble with one another, beautiful in their liveliness. 'I was just drawing those cats over there. They're really cute!'
'⦠you like cats, too, right?'
ā How enchanting! Her intrusion gave him no cause to hesitate, no abrupt pause in his pace... only self-assured strokes that drew her in further. Considering this an invite, his personal bubble was broken and she rested her head on his shoulder, watching the sketch came to life. Her eyes flickered to the cats playing with each other and she was charmed by how much of their rambunctious had been captured on paper.Ā
"I love them. My day is only complete if I'm able to spend some time with another cat..." Ā Ah, that's right. She hadn't reached her daily quota today had she? She curled her fingered within her palm and motioned towards the felines, hoping to catch their attention.
"Have you shown this to them? I could call them over if you'd like and we could listen to what they have to say. I'm certain they would be flattered!"
swallowcutter
ā His scent put her on edge.Ā
A touch of smoke, a smidgen of danger, dollops of slyness... any second now, she expected an assault of chains to strike at her from behind a burst of noxious smoke or find herself dodging silver flashes as a skilled katana aimed for her head..
So it didn't matter to Miike how ridiculous she may look to the samurai, crawling around on all fours as she steadily circled him. It was the easiest way for her to quickly pounce and subdue him, if he made even a threatening twitch.Ā
"... Your lot bring nothing but misfortune with every step you take. I thought here I may at least be free of you vermin... who are you? What is your business here?"
āĀ "... What is Valentine's day? I hear mentions of sweets and adored ones but I'm afraid it's still lost on me."
"...If I don't have a... r-romantic partner... may I still indulge?
ninjactionews
ā She wouldn't go as far as to say she was starving... but Miike was definitely more than just a simple hungry. Her stomach growled with loud complaint and no amount of rubbing it could content it for long. She needed sustenance in any form! Be it simple dango or a heavy boar stew!
... Unfortunately, due to the nagging voice of a certain bespectacled fellow she had reacquainted herself with, asking for ample generosity of passersbys was out of the question. So she would do the next best thing.
"Pardon me sir... may I offer my services to you? I'm in need of a bit of coin for food, you see... I'm quite adept at many things, you must have something you need assistance with?"
"The big christian one⦠but no. I just know my boss is the man closest to god. I donāt actually know him.ā
"He must have something to do with thisā¦"
ā "Chris... tian? I don't think I know that one. Mmm... one of... the seven gods of fortune? Perhaps?"
"... Would he be so cruel? If he serves a god, he must have some kindle of kindness within his heart. Unless you've done something to provoke his fury?"
"Its probably the fault of that guy. I live near the man who is closest to god
and its most likely his fault that Iām in this predicament.āĀ
"THAT FUCKER!"
ā Ā "P-Please do not get so upset! It's an unfortunate predicament we are in... but there are fine establishments to distract yourself with! Restaurant stalls, for instance. Or glowing buildings that challenge you to dance with patterns. Or--
"...? Are you... acquainted with a god? Which one?"
heyho! how about some afternoon regmaf? hereās a check for ya!
hansei-hansui
ā "What are you drawing?" Her voice was soft and gentle, promising not to startle the young artist any further than she needed to. In fact, it probably would have been for the best if she had continued watching from a distance, leaving him unobstructed. But her curiosity was piqued... and as a cat, it was an overwhelming burden to ignore.
"I hope you don't mind my asking. Would you prefer if I left you alone?"
āNah⦠I like cats⦠but Iām wondering how the heck did these guys capture a nekomata of all things. Arenāt you guys suppose to be hard to catch?ā
ā "I have met mixed reactions towards my species here... so I'm quite happy to hear you say that!"
"... T-That... erm, w-well... I was on my way to becoming stronger before they had... imprisoned me here. If I had been a little faster, perhaps I wouldn't have been-- w-what of yourself, sir? You look to be a capable fellow..."
