The continent of Westeros is home to immense natural resources. Gold and silver is found under the hills of the Westerlands, whilst marble is quarried in the Mountains of the Moon. Amber is mined from the Red Mountains, whilst lemon groves dot the Dornish shores of the Summer Sea. The great forests of the North are rich with game, whilst lumber from those woods give rise to powerful longbows. Proud horses are reared on immense ranches on the Reach, whilst the Riverlands’ fertile, well-watered fields yield barley, corn and wheat in immense amounts. Iron mines dot the islands named for them, and vast fish shoals can be found off the shores of the Seven Kingdoms.

Trade is the lifeblood of the Seven Kingdoms, merchants carrying goods and news from Castle Black to Saltshore and sometimes beyond, across the Narrow Sea to the Free Cities and Slaver’s Bay, sped on their way by steed and ship. The constant wheel of growing, harvesting, trade and travel keeps life in the Seven Kingdoms ticking over, and when it is interrupted by war, religious strife and piracy, chaos and sometimes famine results.

House Reed of Greywater Watch is a noble house from Greywater Watch, and one of the principal families in the north. They rule the crannogmen, small men who live in swamps and marshes in the Neck. According to a semi-canon source, the Reeds descend from the First Men.The Reeds first swore their oaths of fealty to House Stark when the Starks were Kings in the North, thousands of years ago.

DRAGONSTONE was the original seat of House Targaryen in Westeros and had been colonized and fortified as the westernmost outpost of the Valyrian freehold. After Aegon’s Conquest of the Seven Kingdoms, Dragonstone in the newly-created crownlands and served as the seat of their heir, known as the Prince of Dragonstone. The castle was built by the Valyrians, using arcane arts, fire, and sorcery. With the use of magic, the Valyrians were capable of liquefying stone. The Dragon lords twisted stone into strange, fanciful, and ornate shapes, and as such used their magic to shape the castle to look like multiple dragons. Smaller dragons can be found throughout the castle; Small dragons frame gates and dragon claws hold torches. A pair of great wings cover the armory and smithy, and dragon tails form archways and staircases.

This post inspired me to procrastinate make a speculative Martell family tree. The anon asked whether Doran was Daenerys’s great-grandson, but I think it more likely that Doran is her great-great grandson. 

The name “Marence Martell” comes from Blood of Dragons. I assumed Marence was the son of Aliandra Martell, but that’s completely speculative on my part. Manfrey Martell is a cousin to Doran, but we don’t know what degree. “Loreza” is, of course, a fanon name. Dates are approximate. I’m guessing Qoren Martell was the great-great grandson of Deria Martell.

The Isle of Women, also known by the more ancient name Abulu, is a small island in the Summer Isles. It is located north of central Walano in the Summer Sea. The isle was home for a time to Nymeria and her Rhoynar refugees before they moved to Dorne in southern Westeros.

All this is also true of Myr, Lys, and Tyrosh, those three quarrelsome daughters whose endless feuds and struggles for dominion have so often managed to embroil the kings and knights of Westeros. These three cities surround the large, fertile “heel” of Essos, the promontory that divides the Summer Sea from the narrow sea and was once part of the land bridge that joined that continent to Westeros.

The World of Ice and Fire - Vaes Dothrak

This hollow shell of a city is ruled by women: the crones of the dosh khaleen, all widows of dead khals. The Dothraki esteem Vaes Dothrak as the holiest of cities. No blood may be shed there, for the riders believe this to be a place of peace and power, where one day all the khalasars shall gather together once more beneath the banners of the great khal who will conquer all, the “stallion who mounts the world.”

Notes:

I previously uploaded a draft version of the Stark lineage; this is the final published version. Unlike the draft, this tree has helpful little roman numerals to designate birth order.

This is of course not the full 8000-year lineage of House Stark; it appears to begin some time after 101 AC, as it is missing Lord Ellard Stark, who voted for Princess Rhaenys in the Great Council of 101.

Some notable characters:

Cregan Stark was Lord of Winterfell during the Dance of the Dragons civil war (129-131). At the end of the war, he served as Hand to Aegon III for a day, presiding over trials and executions, in what became known as the Hour of the Wolf. Corlys Velaryon was spared a trial “by the machinations of Baela and Rhaena Targaryen, who convinced Aegon to issue an edict restoring to him his offices and honors, then by Black Aly Blackwood when she gave Lord Stark her hand in marriage in return for the boon of allowing Aegon’s edict to stand.” (Alysanne “Black Aly” Blackwood was one of the leaders of the Riverlander “black” forces, along with her younger brother Benjicot and the young lord Kermit Tully.)

Cregan’s son Rickon fought bravely in Daeron “The Young Dragon”’s Conquest of Dorne; his death in one of the final battles was lamented in the North in the years to come because of the troubles during the reigns of his half-brothers.

A Skagosi rebellion during the reign of Daeron II took the life of Lord Barthogan “Barth Blacksword” Stark.

c. 212 AC, Lord Beron Stark formed an alliance with the Lord of Casterly Rock to throw Dagon Greyjoy’s reavers back into the sea.

Raymun Redbeard, the last King-Beyond-the-Wall to cross the Wall, led an invasion of thousands of wildlings in 226 AC. At a battle at Long Lake, Raymun fought and died, but not before slaying Lord Willam Stark. When the Night’s Watch finally arrived after the battle’s end, Willam’s brother Artos (“the Implacable”, the most feared warrior of the age) gave them the task of burying the dead.

Rodrik Stark, “the Wandering Wolf”, served with the Second Sons mercenary company for a time.

Benedict “Rogers” is a typo — per Elio, it should be Benedict Royce. Thus Jocelyn Stark is the one who married the scion of House Royce of the Gates of the Moon, as Catelyn mentions in ASOS.
