First time hearing about Masakado superstition, what's that about and why it can get tm in trouble irl? Ive seen other Japanese franchises portray him just fine?
It's really an incredibly ancient tradition, so I'm not familiar with its origins and cases either, but Masakado has been a prominent figure in Japanese fiction since the ancient times, yet it's kinda always been said that his ghost will curse everyone that publishes fiction depicting his character, unless they visit every single shrine dedicated to Masakado's worship to respectfully announce their intents to his sacred spirit before making the material public. I think the superstition is more prominent applied to theater plays (in the West, Macbeth has a pretty similar history of theater accidents, by the way), but it was also commonly applied to writing and illustrations as well.
I don't think many people seriously believe the Masakado curse nowadays, but famously, Atlus has a set Masakado shrines route they make their entire staff pilgrimage through for each of their Shin Megami Tensei releases featuring him.
