What happened? Why has this changed that people don’t reblog stuff??? Genuinely want to know because people are very much using repost/share features on sites like IG and Bsky, but they are doing that less and less here where the site was literally built to function via reposts which we just call reblogs on tumblr.

Like I get that no one owes anyone “engagement” or whatever it’s called these days - but this ain’t about that. It’s about sharing our love for a thing PUBLICLY (dare I say socially) and hoping it’ll find new people to also love it PUBLICLY. (Don’t get me started on my old man yells at cloud speech about fandom being privatized/gate-kept and hidden in discord servers)

Like what happened to unabashedly sharing interests? Putting stuff up on the tumblr fridge (via reblogs) that are basically saying “omg guys look at this amazing thing, I saw it and I wanted everyone else to see it so I’m putting it up on my tumblr fridge for you to see because it’s amazing and I thought you’d like to see it too and hey maybe you can take a copy (reblog from me) and put it on your fridge cuz maybe someone you know that I don’t know will want to see it too”

i was going to add this to my tags rant, but actually i need to say it out loud:

if you privatize your enjoyment of fandom creations, fandom creators are going to start privatizing their creativity.

art will stop being posted. fics will stop being updated. blogs and ao3 accounts will disappear. some of these creatives will just start sending their works to people they know will enjoy them; others will stop creating entirely. and it will be because they got tired of being ignored in favor of secret little discord bookclubs and shunned to the hidden likes section on people's blogs.

the biggest contributors to this toxic fandom culture of apathy and selfishness love to point out that no one is owed engagement. you forget that you are not owed what you now call "content", and you will lose the things you enjoy because you refuse to be kind to the people who are making them available.

It's true you should first and foremost create for yourself and people that enjoy it will rally behind you BUT it's also true if you get like 5 likes you might stop posting that content or content all together because it just feels like a beat down to spend hours on something for people to consume it so quickly and move on with not even a nod your way. I'll say it again: Discords with friends are fun to spread creativity, and share ideas but if you're not sharing the love with the creators you enjoy they might not be there when you finally do come back.

I think a few things happened:

1) At some point, reblogging started to be seen as rude and inconsiderate, especially if someone reblogged something the "wrong" way. I have seen people complain about people adding onto posts, and when tags became visible in the notes there was a HUGE outcry because now the OP had to see them. I think this might stem from when notifications destroyed your dashboard but it's always been weird to me that a healthy amount of people on the Share Posts Website get mad when people share posts.

2) At the same time, some people got exceptionally aggressive about demanding reblogs rather than likes, which if you act rude and entitled enough over it, results in people deciding that the post isn't worth engaging with in any form.

3) The fact that people on tumblr use the term "reblog" to mean "share the post onto your blog" and the term "repost" to mean "steal a post and claim it was your own work", while other sites use "repost" to mean "share the post onto your account", doesn't help anything either. Reblog even shows up as a spelling error on my phone while repost doesn't! So a lot of people (and I have seen people actually talk about this confusion) will see posts that say DON'T REPOST!!!! and think "huh. Guess they don't want me to share it. Well, I'll give them a like, anyway."

4) Tumblr's moral purity guardians of "I can't believe you reblogged a post about that!!! I'm going to write a ten thousand word callout and get you harassed off of the site!!!!" are...not really conducive to wanting to share posts if you are in any fandom ever. And even just fandom hostility in general can give people pause. For a very mild example, in around 2013 a large portion of the Doctor Who fandom was extremely vocal about hating the Eleventh Doctor era. That's the sort of thing that makes you worry that you will be yelled at by strangers for liking something.

I'm sure there are other factors too but these are the ones I've noticed over 13 years on this website. And notice how almost all of them are because of people being assholes. (Aside from the reblog/repost thing which is a legitimate terminology misunderstanding.)

We talk a lot about how cringe is dead on here but in order for cringe to actually be dead, people need to feel safe engaging in fandom however they want, and reblogging posts they enjoy without getting yelled at.
