there are not enough people wanting to fuck the monsters from power rangers
Oh, are you new here? Let me introduce you to everyone. First is Fred Cook, he's a locksmith. Then there's Joanne Smith, our hunter. Hayden Carpenter works for the banks, and Liam Schumacher is our cook. Then there's our carpenter, Christian Priest. Up there on the right is Emily banks, she's a shoemaker. And of course we can't forget about the priest, Jacob Hunter.
happy pride you know what that means

I think it's perfectly possible to maintain character immersion while having that extra layer of abstraction necessary for a metanarrative. But it's a very delicate thing.
It's possible but you're fighting an uphill battle when you do it.
However, Gameoverse isn't trying to do a meta narrative. It's trying to do a regular narrative, with a layer of meta stapled on because the creators are Gamers™.
no wait i've got more to say about gameoverse
i think even if i enjoyed the experience of watching the pilot it still wouldn't click with me on a deeper level because the premise is fundamentally broken.
imagine a show where you're told off the bat that there is a multiverse. and in that multiverse, for some reason, entire universes are disappearing when some condition is met within them. and there are two factions: one who is trying to prevent these conditions from arising, and another that is intentionally bringing them about to harvest the dead universes for nefarious purposes. this is a solid premise for a show. the goals and stakes are easy to understand. this is gameoverse without the game. it's overse.
taking this idea, and then going "oh and also it's in a video game world" sounds like it should be trivial, but it's not. there's more to being a video game than just being a video game. a video game is something that is programmed by a human being person for other people to play. a big part of gameoverse's premise is that these video game worlds die when the "game" is "over", which is also when you stop playing a game. but is there anyone playing the game? if worlds are deleted when games end, are they not also created when a new game begins? are all of these worlds not inherently disposable? they are made to serve a purpose, and when they are no longer needed they stop existing.
you can say I'm asking a bunch of stupid questions but my point is that the show has seemingly put very little thought into the "being a video game" part of being a video game. if you have a video game world that doesn't already exist within the medium of a video game, it being a video game world is going to create an extra layer of separation between the story and the viewer which is going to make it harder to care about anything that's happening. this is what i was referring to in that inscryption post i made way back when, about stories that are meta but also expect you to stay immersed in the characters. NO! you cannot have it both ways! if you're going to make a show about a video game world you need to address how being a video game affects this world! and if you're not going to address it, then what the fuck is even the point of setting your show in a video game world?!
gameoverse kinda sucked a lot
I got around to actually watching the pilot because of this ask
I thought it was pretty good? I'm at least hooked enough to actually remember to watch the second episode whenever it comes out. Time will tell if it hooks me for real, but you know, I'm at least curious
Jschlatt using his normal voice and setup for Kaboodle is probably jarring to some, but I think it's really funny
I also watched the pilot because of this post.
uhhhh the worldbuilding is really weird and arbitrary, the setting feels slapped together purely to justify a story engine and it's one that doesn't catch my fancy.
none of the characters stood out as all that interesting. malice, maybe? but one solid character does not a good show make.
also it's uhhhh not funny. i will agree that schlatt is one of the highlights, he knows how to sound funny even if he's not saying anything funny.
i will not be watching episode 2.
i will automatically believe any zelda theory that makes vaati more important
