vegas 2011

vincent lemaire was just happy to be there. he knew he didn't have a hope in hell of winning rookie of the year despite his solid performance. he had made his peace with being a seat filler but he was going to commemorate the evening all the same. before the evening began in earnest, he cornered hollander and rozanov for a picture in the photo booth, and sure, the vibes were off, but he just put it down to nerves and slung his arms around them for the four quick snaps. they sloped off before he could give either of them a strip but he was happy with the result even if they were each shooting the other funny looks through their canned smiles. after the fanmail video and an interview where they mention the lack of photos from early in their relationship, his wife convinces him to send them one of the strips. and if it ends up on the hollander-rozanov fridge with magnets covering vincent lemaire's beaming face between them, then what vincent lemaire doesn't know won't hurt him.

sochi 2014

carter vaughn made it his goal to get pictures with as many athletes as he possibly could during the winter games. there was a booth tucked into the corner of a bar near the athlete's village and by the end of the opening weekend he'd worked his way through both the US men's and women's hockey teams. he got rozanov the night before his match with latvia. he talked a big game about how russia had it in the bag but there were bags under his eyes and a tension at the corners of his mouth that wasn't there during the regular season. so carter pulled him into the booth under his right arm and they struck silly pose after silly pose and he sent him off with a strip tucked into his jacket pocket and a good luck clapped into his shoulder. carter got hollander after he stomped back to his seat during the men's short form figure skating. he clocked the sharp change in hollander's mood and insisted he join him and scott at the bar afterwards, "they even have ginger ale," he told him, and yanked him into the photobooth under his left arm after some good natured chirps got the light back in his eyes. hollander left with a strip stashed in his wallet. years later when shane finally moves into ilya's ottawa house, they unearth the strips and if they angle them just right in the frame, it almost looks like the three of them took the photos together.

vegas 2014

they each have two strips from that night. the first, neither of them can remember who shoved them into the booth but they were crammed in with more broad shouldered teammates than the booth could really accommodate, all of them red faced from too much champagne. they were at the back. shane's back pressed against ilya's front and ilya's hands snuck underneath shane's suit jacket to pinch at his hips just to get a rise as he hooked his chin over shane's shoulder. the second was taken just after. shane stayed after the others left, hit capture for some solo shots because, well he didn't really know. it was something to do. in the end it told a story. between the first shot and the last ilya pushed back into the booth with a loud shout of, "must have dropped my key card!" before pushing shane back up against the photobooth wall to kiss him until it left his knees weak. he slipped the penthouse key card into shane's tux pocket along with the second photo strip and a low, "see you soon." they don't keep that particular strip where anyone can see them. ilya keeps his in his wallet now, tucked behind his cash, where it's easy to pull out when he needs it. shane keeps his on his office desk wedged into the frame of his favourite picture from their wedding as a reminder of how far they've come and how far they'll go.

As someone writing 2 rarepair fics (Crushin' It! on AO3 for one and the companion fic that will be out after the final chapter drops), I feel this so much. I wanted to see Troy/Shane in fic, so I wrote it.

ilya's bisexuality really is such a vital part of his character and his identity and i Do get a little bothered when people (usually normies/straight people) just refer to him as gay bc he's in love with a man....but that's just my personal feelings as a #bi person

ACTUALLY i'm adding onto this bc there's something i always notice in ep 6 that i wanna talk abt briefly, and that's yuna & david's faces when shane says "ilya likes both" - especially yuna

there's concern there. it's obvious. and it's SO common when it comes to bisexuality bc there's this huge and annoying misconception that bisexual people are unfaithful unloyal cheaters. and you can see it in her face as she processes the information that this is an immediate concern for her and for her son.

and now let's look at ilya's face

now he's concerned, because he knows he has to explain himself (which he does. he shouldn't have to but he does) and he's basically throwing out a hail mary to shane's parents that says hey, wait, no, i'm not gonna cheat on your son. i love your son. just because i'm bisexual doesn't mean i would hurt shane.

and this is something bisexual people deal with all the time btw. not just from straight people, not just from gen x & boomers, but from our own community too. it's incredibly exhausting. anyway i just notice this every time it makes my heart hurt a bit for ilya.
