One of the worst recurring experiences I’ve had with people who use their religion as a justification for being anti-LGBT is this. I will mention that (due to trauma), entering a church or other religious place makes me feel deeply uncomfortable, anxious, and sometimes even unsafe. The person hearing this then has the audacity to invalidate my trauma and say that that horrible feeling I get about religious meetings and places is just me being convicted, like I “know I need to change”. That type of gaslighting-esque statement, especially after having heard it so many times, really messed with my head for a long time and sometimes it still does. But I shouldn’t have to deny the fact that I feel unsafe in these areas because of terrible past experiences as well as worries related to the experiences of others like me. I shouldn’t have to shovel guilt into my system to “swallow” my trauma with. It’s awful. I wish people understood that saying stuff like this hurts and can literally make a person feel self hatred on an extra level for years. Ugh.
