analysing haikaveh's body language and distance in a parade of providence compared to cyno's story quest 2
in Cyno’s Story Quest II Kaveh seems secure in his position as Alhaitham's equal, and as such, Alhaitham is regarded as Kaveh's equal in turn. There is no reference to the superiority of a senior's expertise as “correctness” has been disregarded, and with this, the unequal power imbalance (as discussed here). The two have surpassed this issue on their road to reconciliation. The lack of titles within this story quest serves as a means of equality between the two now that scholarly pride is no longer an obstacle between them.
As such it is interesting to (over)analyse Haikaveh’s body language and distance within A Parade of Providence and in Cyno’s story quest 2
They are the most distant within A Parade of Providence, in which the two are always separated by a physical barrier, such as a desk:
or standing at a distance from one another and on opposite sides, preventing them from facing each other directly:
or with Alhaitham being elevated upon a platform, whilst kaveh is on the ground below:
Within the event, the only time the two are physically on an even level is at the end, in which Alhaitham tells Kaveh that they have move past being “wrong” or “right”. In this, the only time in which they are physically open with each other, and on equal elevation levels, is when the potentiality for the overturning of scholarly pride is discussed, and therefore there exists the potential of a true, mutual understanding.
Comparatively, in the flashback scene within cyno’s story quest 2, Kaveh is observed on two occasions to sit on the table rather than opposite or next to Alhaitham on a divan. This ensures that the two directly face each other:
This can be seen again in the House of Daena, where, when studying, the two sit on opposite sides of the table, facing each other, as they are of equal standing:
In terms of equality, this can be speculated as physical manifestation of their aligned perspectives. Rather than one existing on an elevated level, through one sitting and the other standing, or directly sitting next to each other (which can restrict the observation of the others’ gestures and body language), the two are now on equal standing.
The only time the two are shown sitting next to each other is in Puspa’s Café, but rather than this being an indicator of inequality, it serves as a reinforcement of mutual intimacy, as the two are paired together rather than being separated in the large gathering
In this sense, this equality in elevation levels can also physically advocate for the open communication the two have now established. This can be seen in their current in game relationship as the two now fully physically reveal themselves, alongside their thoughts, to the other, rather than concealing themselves with defensive body language, and double entendre in speech. They are now open and honest with each other - mutually equals in all respect!!
(This analysis snippet is from my Haikaveh queercoding essay found here!)
I love how the game visually plays (heh) with their dynamic. It's not necessarily uncommon between the characters to be placed and move to deliver a nonverbal reading to the player about the relationships, but it stands out how much of a core mechanic it is for haikaveh specifically.
Usually if the characters are established friends or know each other, they'll stay at each other's side when meeting someone new, but the game also likes to mix it up when these new acquaintances are brought "into the circle" and progress into friendship (I will always go insane over the playable characters interacting and making friends across the nations, for many - like Ayaka, Furina, Kokomi, even Nilou - it's such an exciting thing to see unravel, since they're isolated one way or another from the world/companionships). But both Alhaitham and Kaveh tend to be put opposite of each other at any turn the game can make, and the environment plays with it too.
I love how their emotional turmoils are visualized externally. A table between them? They build walls around their feelings and refuse to get close. One standing above the other on a platform? That's a great projection of feeling inferior (if it's true inferiority or just negative emotions manifesting in a toxic way is a debate for flavor). One sits and the other stands above him? That's just someone trying to be the bigger person/bigger authority, but the one sitting still somehow has the power in the moment (Alhaitham's confidence is goals, truly).
Anything before Cyno's 2nd story quest was really an elaborated dance of inner struggles that couldn't be contained inside. With Kaveh it makes sense, he wears his emotions openly (for the most part), his inner thoughts getting translated to the public is nothing unexpected. Alhaitham is better at keeping it to himself, but truly, in Kaveh's presence he just automatically starts reflecting his own emotions (it does make me wonder if it's something he can't even control, like a Pavlovian response; he sees Kaveh and he just drops all of his 'cool act' because this is more valuable to him).
Their first equal standing with no barrier between them (that we were allowed to see as outsiders) was at the end of Alhaitham's story quest in their study when the Traveler was meant to be gone. There was this quiet, calm air, they talked pretty straight forward, no over-excessive bickering; the silliness came after the serious talk as a way to lighten the mood, really.
Their second equal standing was the talk about Kaveh's dad. They stand eye to eye, they're calm, quiet, serious. They're stumbling through it like newly born foal, but they get the main points across as gracefully as they could, and then they switch into a silly bicker, because dropping all the heavy emotions at once in the open wouldn't be good for them (like, those feelings and problems are dragging on for years, them switching the topics at a drop of a hat to lighten the mood is the healthiest thing they could do; it takes time sorting this out).
And then we get Cyno's 2nd story quest and it's just....get a room, please. They stand side by side way closer than they did any time before. When they stand across each other there is nothing standing as a barrier between them. They're still silly, but the air and tone they use is gentler, less of probing where the boundaries are (it's more confident that they're on the same wavelength). And isn't that amazing?
And them sitting next to each other? Wild. I mean, jokes aside, sitting next to a person can be experienced in a lot of ways, but it often boils down to: 1) easier time being honest (because there is no direct eye contact (if not deliberately turning to them), and that makes confessing one's true thoughts easier; it's how talking at night or in a dark space pushes people to be more open), and 2) there is trust in the one besides you (being 'blind' to the other person means there must be some sort of trust, be it for personal space, covering the blind spots, not being in each other's way...). And haikaveh sitting opposite each other when studying/reserching/dealing with problems, but sitting or standing next to each other outside of such things, is just another physical manifestation of their dynamic.
Their ideals are mirrors; it's not complete opposite, like an antonym, but it's the same thing from two different perspectives. And them dealing with problems from those opposite sides makes the problem solving easier, because there's less details to escape their collective effort. In the end, their ideals stride to the same destination, they just go about it from two different angles.
And since it's all a balance and not a competition anymore, they can put their ideals aside in times that it's not needed (drinking coffee together doesn't always have to be a philosophical debate, or squabbling on the street can be something else than altruism vs egoism, because they're more than their ideals).
It just really makes me think that their fallout was due to them clinging to their beliefs blindly and not knowing yet that you can have ideals and still be a person. Since they were young at that time, it's nothing surprising, anything like this early in life feels like it's the most important/the whole point of a person, and letting it go for a moment feels wrong. Them now being able to compromise or even leave it at the door, because there is time and place where their opposite views don't matter to be a debate, and let themselves simply enjoy life must be healing for them both. Because now they can be just some guys, and nothing more.
!!!!!!!!!!!
Love this whole discussion 🩷
Kavehtham makes me so insane because in any other genre they’d make for the world’s most gripping love story, but they’re stuck as side characters in a game haunted by China’s censors so we only get vague ideas of what they’re up to
BIG mood
I need a game where it’s just Haikaveh - You play as one of them and the other tags along like they’re your Paimon… Wandering Teyvat, bickering and trying different foods and coffee like they’re on a travel show…
a memento
I just have to rec this fic today, because it’s the best thing I’ve read all week! ❤️
@heartslogos threw everything at the wall and it stuck with this one 😄 People stanning Alhaitham like it’s a job and thirsting after him — SO so relatable!! 😆 (I feel very seen and I appreciate you incorporating me into this story 😂👌) Cyno and Dehya doing the lord’s work while trying not to lose their minds… And Kaveh. Dear sweet Kaveh that I (and Alhaitham) can always rely on to be his masterful, magical self ❤️🥰
Seriously y’all - you NEED to read this over the weekend!

That feeling when you don’t even get a chance at a promotion because you’re autistic and don’t “fit” but now you have to train your boss to do a job you’ve been doing for a decade:
same fucking lovestruck stare i’m gonna throw up
(the golden ratio one might not be from a quest so take this with a grain of salt ok gtg continue to throw up now)
Who is this Dr Ratio person and why does he look exactly like Alhaitham and Kaveh’s love child??
Some of my fave hkvhs that I’ve done 🤲🏽
Society: be yourself!
Me as a child: *be’s myself*
Society: ewww omg what is wrong with you! We said to be yourself not weird! We’re gonna reject you and make you an outsider!
Me: but I followed your rule of being myself? Why don’t you like me? What’s wrong with me? Why does everyone else get the rules that need to be followed but I don’t?
I wasn’t planning to play this guy…
But then he said “There’s something about those two guys hanging out with each other… You just can’t look away!”
And I realized Sethos is one of us and I can’t not support his ascension dreams
I'm so normal about this (no im not)
