everyone i've talked to about this has been completely unaware so: if you didn't know already, there's going to be a solar eclipse, with totality or coverage of 90% or more in some places, over a lot of europe, on august 12th 2026. in the uk it will start just after 6pm, and the maximum will be at 7:13pm.

Hey so that was a great date, yeah, but I don't think it's going to work out. My friend messaged me today having a mental health spiral after finding out about the threat to the rice belt of many East and South East Asian countries from rising sea levels.

And I had to say, The Netherlands and Belgium managed to turn the sea floor into farmland with only the technology that was available a few hundred years ago, so we can definitely save agricultural land from the sea with the brute force of human hands. Also the rice paddies in Indonesia that have been flooded more recently are now being used to farm Mud Crabs which actually both feeds the farmers and is more lucrative than the rice.

Also Chinese scientists have already genetically modified popular rice strains to be salt resistant so they can be cultivated in brackish water. Which is expected to feed 200million more people than today by 2030.

Human society often doesn't lock in until it's crunch time, but we do hand in the assignment.
