Everyone in this family is hilarious no notes
Words/phrases I often see from British/Australian writers while writing American characters (and some American alternatives because I know it’s tricky!):
Bugger (American: fuck/fucker)
Flat (American: apartment, “my place”)
Bloke (American: guy, asshole, dude)
Queue (American: line, checkout line)
Cuppa (American: cup of tea, hot tea)
Shite (American: bullshit, shit, crap)
Some of these are regional, like all of the various American words for the British “trolley” (American: shopping cart, buggy, cart, etc) but most of the above words are pretty ubiquitous.
Dropping the article from nouns (American: the/a hospital, the/a university)
Bin (maybe sommme Americans use it? But mostly trashcan, garbage)
Lift (American: elevator)
Arse (American: ass)
We have once again reached the lowered reading comprehension section of the replies. Friends! Please reread the above. There were no value judgements made above. You can continue to use inaccurate terminology for your characters if you choose.
What this is flagging is that the words you are using—in dialogue or narration from an American POV—don’t fit what we use here. and if that’s something that concerns you, or if you want your readers not to get hung up on (to steal an example from the comments) “Why is Midwesterner Dean Winchester talking about a torch??”, these are the words we actually use.
We know what you mean when you use your terminology. We’re saying your American characters would not use those words, so here are the alternatives should you choose to care.
Also one that actually COULD be confusing:
Scheme -> program. You have a jab scheme, we have a vaccination program.
I know it's more nuanced than this but I think having a hard policy of thinking anyone who genuinely hates one group of queer people for their identity might as well hate all of us and thus I should block any queerphobic queer person I see can do a lot to save you from believing anything exclusionists say.
"bomb that kills all-" "I just don't get bi women bringing their-" "pansexuality isn't a real thing-" "all lesbians-" "trans men really are men bcs they're all misogynistic predators-" "theyfabs-" "pfft aroace people are cringe-" "nonbinary people are actually all-" Instant block. Goodbye. Not listening. It's for both solidarity with your fellow queers AND to protect yourself, because once a person is convinced to hate one group for their immutable traits they can be convinced fairly easily to hate another too, and thus I do not trust them.
Just block these people the second they pop up, they aren't your allies and nothing they have to say is worth listening to.
Citations could be so awesome without copyright. Imagine just being able to click on a footnote and it takes you to the exact section of another book being quoted. Imagine how much that would do for stemming misinformation.
Here's yet another Project Hail Mary drawing, this one is inspired by the legendary fishing scene.
just because I don’t start the conversation, doesn’t mean I’m not dying to talk to you
Lmao I’m back- my brain is still chewing on your fic like a squeaky toy- Look at that successful cowboy/space thermos wrangler go!! I really debated whether the American flag should still go on his jumpsuit before I decided that haaaah yeah the US government WOULD do that- Good job as always!!!
Ahhhh thank you! I love this! We've got his space uniform (courtesy of the US of A lol)
I love how you've rendered all his gear. He's so ready for anything. Space ace cowboy Grace!

Magic binder that teliports your boobs to a transfem of your choosing
Imagining a trans womans chest suddenly deflating while she’s at the club and being like ‘noooooo Dylan must be home 😭😭😭’
i think something a lot of people don't get is that years of mocking your child, even in jest, does in fact tend to get under their skin
a decade or two of even light verbal harassment is very much accentuated when it's an authority figure you are in every meaningful way subservient to
I've known a number of non binary people in my life and I think single biggest conclusion I can draw from that is that non binary people are not the same. Like if Men fit in box A and women fit in box B, people really, really want nonbinary people to fit in a theoretical box C, and it just doesn't work like that. They are outside the boxes. They defy any simple categorization because they are not a third way of being, but every other possible way of being.
Being supportive of binary people is relatively simple, they have decided to sort themselves into one of the boxes that we have lots of experience interacting with. Being supportive of nonbinary people can be comparatively tricky, because you have to resist the urge to create box C and drop them all there. That's how we end up with various prejudices like "woman lite". Humans really, really like to categorize things. It helps us think. Unfortunately, sometimes it helps us think wrong.
If you have a non binary person in your life, I think it is important to take the extra effort to learn about them specifically.
Despite it all I can't hate solarpunk. It's caramel-apple sweet-simplistic, a desire for a greater world on one simple axis without grappling with any kind of political reality. You can chip at its ankles but unfortunately it will still be kind of awesome epicsauce at its heart. Sometimes you really do need to just cut past all the hard-nosed realism, get back to the kid looking up at you with those big blubbering eyes saying "what if everyone was nice to eachother?" That kid does not know an ant's arse about the real world or how it works, but they're still 1000 times more correct than all of us trying to explain why it can't be done. You can't lose sight of the stupid, hopeless dream. You can't lose sight of it. Otherwise you turn into a dickhead.
The thing is you can have a grassy lawn or even a golf course without it being an ecological disaster, you just have to a: be cool about having the occasional non-grass plant in the mix and b: be willing to live in a climate that supports grass without irrigation.
