BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER ⤠4.15 This Yearâs Girl
josephbrandâ:
âItâs true, I wouldnât blame her either, but itâd never get her out of it.â Joe nodded in agreement with her. For as much as Joey indulged in the things of the arts, and how many people in the various fields in it, especially in media, he didnât quiet know how it all worked. He jumped so often from fascination to fascination, holding on to some details, but not all of it. â I donât think they expected it to be so popular, but then it blew up, the film industry does like to underestimate the power of teen fans.â He added, as much as he enjoyed the arts it was a place that was rather pretentious, itâs why he had so much enjoyment of insisting and seeing it all as art. â To their credit though, I do think some of the wigs got better over time, not great, but not as bad as Jacobâs first.â
With the confusion that twisted on her face it was clear that heâd gotten something wrong, or maybe she was really contemplating what heâd said about the food. His eyes flicked downward as he waited to find out which, a little less confident in his interpretation of what she said. â Well, you-â Heâd open his mouth to explain what heâd meant a bit further, but was cut off as the realization hit her. Joey gave a shake of his head as Nico explained and let out a hearty laugh, heâd been so off base he couldnât help, but laugh at himself. â Very cute, right, I see. â He said after his laughter died down. He hadnât really done well in language classes, it wasnât much his thing, he might of even taken some french once, if he did though it clearly hadnât stuck. Subtitles were a god send for him when it came to the foreign films whenever one came across things. Joey contemplated a joke about how he made up for the lack of refinement in other areas, like in women and films, a little joke and compliment for her, but wasnât sure itâd land. He didnât want her feeling pressured in anyway and while theyâd known each other awhile Nico mostly had stuck to herself for awhile and might not know it was just a teasing compliment.  â Maybe, but unrefined in a charming way, in a very Très mignon way, yes?â Joey joked, nudging into her lightly offering her a smile to let her know no hard feelings.Â
Joey leaned into the couch getting more comfortable, well even more comfortable and waved his phone a bit before he unlocked it to find the delivery app that had his favorite place on it. â Luckily, with modern development we wonât have to go past the door, we can just sit nice and cozy while we wait.â He answered, pulling up the restaurant and itâs menu for Nico, then offering his phone to her. â Here, go ahead and look, Iâll add what I want after youâre done, but I will be getting spring rolls and mango sticky rice for us to share.
âDo you ever think about the butterfly effect? And Twilight?â Although it was a bit of a jump from what they were actually talking about, she couldnât help but stop think about how crazy the impact had been. Teen romance had always been a popular genre, even more so now. Twilight really had been a cultural reset, she hadnât been joking about that. Twilight as a franchise had ushered in the new genre of fan fiction based films. If she remembered correctly, the butterfly effect went even farther, back to 9/11. She wasnât really sure about all that, she hadnât lived in America at the time, but maybe Joey knewâ being the twilight fan he was. Realizing sheâd all but completely ignored what heâd said, she sheepishly added, âBut, yes, the wig was really bad.â
She was grateful he took it well, even seeming to find it funny with her. Having had to learn English, she knew that learning a second language wasnât always the easiest thing to do, so she never really judged people if they struggled with understanding. There were situations, however, where they were too funny not to laugh. Especially as he continued to butcher her native tongue. Despite having just explained what it meant, heâd still added âveryâ in front of it, nursing another laugh out of her. âJoey,â she giggled, trying to catch her breath, âI just explained this, très mignon means âvery cuteâ. You donât have to add very in front of itâ but you are right about one thing, you are very very cute.â She finished her compliment with a nudge back, shoulder lingering against his for a moment.
Although she rolled her eyes, a smile accompanied it as she replied, âI know what delivery is, I just meant that not every place does it. Especially not local placesâ have you noticed that?â She scooted closer to him, pausing when he reached held his phone out to her. In truth she felt a little bad, itâd probably take her a while to look through it all, and he seemed to already know what he wanted. Still, she took it from him and started scrolling. As expected, most of it was unfamiliar, and she quickly realized sheâd be better off guessing at what she might like most. She settled on something called Massaman Curry. It seemed similar enough to the types of food she normally ate, lots of meat and potatoes. Handing it back to him, she leaned her head on his shoulder to watch as he ordered. She wasnât trying to be nosy, she was just curious about what he was getting for himself. âMangoes and rice? I never wouldâve thought to put the two together,â she mused thoughtfully.

Nico hadnât been the best at coming up with devious plans. At the start of her self appointed ârebellious phaseâ sheâd made a list of all the things she could do to act out. Sheâd even used her favorite gel pens to do it, but she liked to think sheâd gotten betterâ worse. Better at thinking of worse things to do. Starting with Angel. Angel was by far one of the worst people she associated withâ not because he was a bad person, but because he did bad things. At first sheâd been using him to get back at her father, but over the time sheâd gotten to know him, sheâd really started to like him. Not too much, not like that, but he was fun to be around. Which had led to her most recent, dastardly plan.
âIâve been thinking,â she spoke as she turned to look at him, âI think we should date, or, I would like to date youâ If you would like to.â She was certainly nervous, though she tried her best to make sure it didnât come across that way. It wasnât like there were any stakes involved, she was really asking him out. It wouldnât matter if he said no, but she wasnât about to deny just how bad her fear of rejection was. Even if it was all fakeâ only sheâd forgotten to include that part, hadnât she. âFuck, No.. I donât, I donât mean it like that!â She exclaimed, eyes wide in a panic, âI meant, pretend. FakeâŚMy father would hate you,â she finished, hoping he would get the point.
Much to her embarrassment, Nico had never been an athletic person. Her dad was a fan of sports, and heâd tried to get her to be too, but sheâd just never taken to it. One of her fatherâs favorite sports had been Skiing, heâd called it an art form, something that required talent to do and look good doing it, but more often than not sheâd end up in the hotel room, or the lobby, waiting for him to finish up. Today felt a lot like that, Sat on the couch in the lodgeâs communal space with a cup of cocoa. With her free hand, she scrolled through her phone, sipping absentmindedly until a familiar figure passed by her line of sight.
Her lips curled up into a smile as she locked her phone and set it on her lap, âJuliette! Salut!â Her excitement caught her a little off guard, but she tried to maintain her smile nonetheless. âCome sit down with me, have a cup of cocoa?â She hoped that sheâd take her up on the offer. She didnât know Juliette too well, but there was something about her that Nicolette just liked. For further emphasis, she patted the spot next to her, still smiling brightly.

josephbrandâ:
Not long after the words had left his mouth had Nico seemed to untangle and stretch finding a new comfortable position. It seemed she was satisfied enough with his answer to stay and make herself comfortable, relenting to wherever the night took them, which was for sure at the very least two more twilight movies. Joey followed her, scooting a little closer towards Nico, not too close not that he thought sheâd mind either way, but just enough so his legs could lay lazily on the coffee table as well. â Apparently you can get sick of a masterpiece after the 100th watch or something like that.â He laughed, thinking about how the enjoyment of the movie had snowballed into whatever it was to him now. They were good, they had their flaws of course, but every movie did. Some of the greatest seemed boring sometimes, or too much blood and gore, but they did for the most part always have something despite their flaws, and twilights was that it was fun- and a masterpiece. â But sometimes I like to make up reasons, like she has a keen interest in wigs and hates the ones they used, or doesnât like how they promote the killing of mountain lions. My favorite is her secret feud with Robert Pattinson after he cut in front of her at a self check out.â Joey mused, sinking lower into the couch, getting more comfortable.Â
His eyebrows furrowed at her words, he never really learned french nor did he really catch on despite Nico using it, but within context it sounded like filet mignon which words he did know, so he figured it must be a french dish of something similar. â Tres mignon? Well I donât know enough about if there is any french food that can compare, nor if my palate will ever be as refined as yours, but we can probably find you a good steak somewhere I have faith in New York in that at least.â Joey replied, confident heâd been barking up at least the right tree and if that had been what Nico was after he could find it. He could probably find french food too, though he might just suggest they go to France if she really didnât believe they could, that was probably too much for a simple movie night though. â Thai food? Oh, yeah itâs great they play with the sweet and spicy well. If you like curries at all the have great ones, and then the noodles and soups⌠really if you like Chinese or Indianan, itâs kind of a mix of elements and flavors from both.âÂ
Nico felt even more comfortable when Joey followed her in getting comfortable, even scooting a little closer to her. In part, she wished heâd done so earlier. There was nothing Nico liked more than a good cuddle, especially while watching a movie, but sheâd wanted to give him his space. An eyebrow raised subconsciously as she listened to him speak. She often wondered if he really thought the twilight films were masterpieces. They were good, sure, but calling it a masterpiece seemed a bit far fetched. Either way, she couldnât help but laugh as he continued on. âThey are pretty awful wigs, I wouldnât blame her if that was actually why. I mean, really, youâd think for such a popular film they couldâve budgeted better.â
Much like Joey, Nicoâs face twisted in confusion as she listened to him go on. His comments on his unrefined palette went unnoticed as she tried to get to the same conclusion he had about her wanting a steak. In all honesty, steak wasnât a favorite of hers, and she really only ate it when her father took her out to dinner because it was what he ordered. âIâm sorry, I donât understand, why a steak? I donât...â she trailed off, his words finally clicking. âYou mean a filet mignon? Très mignon means âvery cuteâ. It was sarcasm,â she replied with a laugh, âI see your palette is neither refined in language or taste.â She let out a sigh, once again testing the waters. It was so much harder with other people now that sheâd expanded her social life. With Gunnar it was easy, she knew him as well as she knew herself, and she never felt uneasy around him. Joey, however, she couldnât tell what might or might not offend him.Â
âI do like spicy food,â she replied, allowing the earlier miscommunication to pass, âand sweet. I would like to try it. Do we have to leave for it, or can it come to us?â
josephbrandâ:
Heâd say Nico was too polite, or maybe a bit more sheltered seeming than some of them, and thatâs why her words came across as if she thought her presence was a burden to be around. However, he couldnât really argue that knowing if she was around long enough sheâd just crawl into his bed and never leave, so it really left that she thought that might be the truth. It was a sad thought, and his smile faltered at it, but he did his best to cover it up fast giving her hardly any time to notice. âOf course , I donât mind.â Joey respond quickly, with a genuine assurance and his wide smile spreading. âYou know I take any chance I get to make one of you sit through Twilight. Iâm sure Flo will probably thank you for letting it be you and not her this time.â He added, keeping it on the lighter side.Â
She had a point, there really was nothing stopping them from just eating and watching, theyâd really only pause to make their order and possibly to pick it up from the door. â I wouldnât normally do this, but for the sake of cinema I may be able to allow us to eat on the couch, but you know Iâm not normally that kind of guy as you can tell.â Joey joked, looking exaggeratedly around the room, the joke falling a bit as it was mostly clean except a few cups and blankets brought out for tonight. Flo really did do a good job of following the tornado he left and making sure youâd never notice it. â So, dinner then.. what should we get? Thai? Sushi? Pizza? Italian?âŚ. French?â The last suggestion leaving his mouth in a slightly higher pitch than the rest, he was a bit unsure, but it was too funny not to suggest even if it was more of a sit at the restaurant food.Â
The fact that his response had been not only genuine, but immediate as well had Nicoâs body relaxing and her smile growing. It seemed that he always knew the right thing to say-- at least, almost always. Sometimes he could be a real idiot. Regardless, it seemed that he really did want her to spend time with her, and with his reassurance she was happy to stay. She took the moment to get comfortable, now that she knew she wasnât going to be getting up any time soon. She uncurled her legs from her body and propped them up on the coffee table, stretching her arms above her head at the same time. âI donât know why she wouldnât want to. Theyâre cinematic masterpieces, truly.â she laughed, though she wouldnât deny there was an air of truth to it. Sheâd actually quite liked the first one, maybe not so much the rest of them, but the first at least.
Her smile faltered a little when Joey mentioned making an exception, unsure of whether or not he was serious or joking. The inflection in his voice indicated it was a joke, but it seemed the room was kept fairly clean. Maybe not as much as her own house, but still cleaner than others. Either way, the second time she could tell it was absolutely a joke. âTres mignon,â she smirked with a roll of her eyes, âI donât think thereâs any decent French cuisine around here, and I donât trust you to appreciate it the way you should.â Pulling her legs back up to her chest, she rested her head on the back of the couch as she considered the options heâd given her. She didnât want to make things too hard for him, so Pizza seemed to be the easiest, but she wasnât really in the mood. Reminding herself that he probably wouldnât mind complicated, she offered a response âIâve never had Thai food before, is it good?â
@nx-bad-daysâ
Nico shifted awkwardly from foot to foot, contemplating whether or not this was too weird. A lot of this was still new to her, and she didnât quite understand the social etiquette to most things. Especially not buying drugs. Something told her she probably shouldâve texted first-- asked if it was okay to come over, if he even had anything to sell at the moment, but sheâd already driven all the way out to Patrickâs apartment. It would probably be even weirder if she texted him now. No, sheâd come out all this way she was just going to knock... in a second or two. Chewing on the inside of her cheek she raised her hand, only to hesitate once more. She could just save herself the embarrassment and head home, but in all honesty she really didnât want to. She hated being left to her own devices.Â
Finally gathering the courage, she knocked on the door, albeit a little too roughly. Silently waiting, she rubbed her now stinging knuckles and hoped that someone was home.
I find I always like a little bit of chaos. It helps me think.Â
