I've been thinking back to that moment when I watched "All of us Strangers" last year and...uff.

How the hell can something be so devastatingly beautiful and so devastatingly sad??? It literally killed me. No movie ever made me cry so, so, so much...

Back then it made me so INSANELY sad that I had absolutely no words for it.

Looking at it from my current perspective I have some specific thoughts about it...but due to (unspecific/vague) SPOILERS I put in under the cut:

Apart from the terribly good display of queer loneliness and queer misery and queer struggles, the film also somehow for me transported this message:

It's good to bury yourself in your own inner world. To write it all out. To process it. To go back to the places that hurt and try to make peace with them. To go to the places, that you are afraid or ashamed of and try to make peace with them as well.

BUT!

Don't wait until you have everything "sorted out" before you open up for human connection. Let people in, even if you are still somehow a bit raw and messy inside. It might be difficult and relationships might take more time and effort to develop and get established. But if you wait until you are "ready", it might be too late. If you imagine how a relationship/friendship could be and write your own story about it in your head, without allowing it to become something real, you might miss the chance. And it will forever remain something that exists only in your own fantasy world. And you will remain lonely. And that is so sad. Because the chance was there🥺

It just reminds me of how important it is, to grab a chance to connect when it's in the air. Even if you can get rejected. Even if it is scary. Even if you are not "ready" because you feel too vulnerable or something. It's almost always worth it!

Especially us queer people. We need to find each other and be there for each other. Because statistically we have an even higher risk to get lonely than everybody else. For reasons. 😥

(Easier said than done, though. I know. Sigh.)

As a society, we need to go back to understanding that strangers on the internet are, you know, strangers. I feel lately that I'm seeing a rise in 'An author I love blocked me because they took my comment the wrong way' posts on the ao3 subreddit, and then the comment is them calling the author a fucking bitch or something like that.

Don't do this. Tone doesn't translate well in text, and if you don't have a rapport with that author, they are not going to interpret, 'You're a fucking bitch' as, 'Author I hate you for being so talented and making me feel so keenly.' They're going to interpret it as you being an asshole. You can shit talk with your friends because you have an established relationship with them and can distinguish between playful banter and genuine anger. You do not have this with a stranger, no matter how much you like their fics. You will have a much more pleasant time in fandom and not get cockblocked from interacting with your favorite writers if you remember this.

I’m not sure how many people realize that there’s a way in which hurt/comfort is actually very kinky, because at its core you’ve got this emotional power exchange fantasy where one character is vulnerable and helpless and the other takes care of them. In the case of stories involving grievous injuries, where someone is bedridden for a long time, you often end up with two characters in a 24/7 total power exchange relationship without a safeword. It just doesn’t involve as many whips and dog collars.

Not to derail from nonbinary folks' additions about gender neutral adjectives, but just CALL THEM BY THEIR NAME (and/or pronouns)

Why is nobody called by their name? Does the "narrating" person not know the name of the person sucking them off? "Oh god, yeah, raven-haired person, use your tongue just like that", something they would say? "Oh yeah, I sucked the taller off yesterday, they came so hard for my ravenet*te ass"?

They have names! You don't talk about your relatives, colleagues, friends etc. by using (only) adjectives, you call them by their names in your head and when talking to other people. And as long as the character's name is known to a) the narrator/POV character and b) the audience, that goes for fictional characters as well.

I'm afraid, I am starting to like this actually xD In a weird, crack-ish way. Now I wanna read a whole Smutfic where the protagonists are only referring to each other by the haircolour and nothing but the haircolour in their dirty-talk!

(Alright. For the record: This remark was not meant to be deadly serious. And also: Don't get put off by OPs charmingly salty undertone ;) - this is actually good advice. If you wanna give me a moment of irritation and throw me out of the story for a little meta-moment and some musings about writing-styles, do the call-them-by-the-haircolour thing. But otherwise, if you intend to really suck readers into your story and keep them hooked, it's definitely good to stick to the actual names (and/or pronouns) ;))

What they don't tell you about writing is that as you write, you discover scenes and entire plots that you hadn't accounted for that need to be written. So you can spend two hours writing and editing only to realise you're further away from the finish line than you thought you were when you started

online numbers can really fuck you up when it comes to your creative work because you're sharing something you worked on with all your heart but it's very important to remember there's actual people behind those numbers. even if it's 1. that's one whole actual person. that's a human being who said "haha nice". that's a connection with a REAL person with a REAL life and REAL thoughts and feelings and experiences. like. damn. that should mean something

I mean…wir sind es schließlich irgendwie gewohnt, haarsträubende/trashige storys/plots durchzuwinken, wenn der spaß-faktor, iconic lines und die friendship-vibes und queer-vibes/gay-vibes dafür stimmen…😁😜 - right?
