Carole, The Night Stalker's first groupie?
One of the most intriguing aspects of the Night Stalker case is the groupies. After Richard Ramirez's arrest, dozens of women of all ages from around the world became obsessed and deeply fascinated by the man identified as L.A.'s Night Stalker. But what if that wasn't the case for all of them? What about a woman whose fascination began even before he was identified?
In the special update Philip Carlo wrote for the tenth-anniversary edition of his book about the Night Stalker he discussed the phenomenon of the women who 'loved' the serial killer, Carlo mentioned that he was curious about it so much so he decided to interview some of these women to know the why and make his own explanation for it, one of these women, was Carole, who her story was a little bit different from the other women.
Carlo said that she lived in Monterey Park while the Night Stalker crimes were taking place. There were five Stalker attacks in Monterey Park. She was a single child in a loveless marriage of convenience. at the time she was interviewed by him she was 34 years old, married, not happily though, with two children and was working as a computer programmer. And he described her saying she looked like the actress Jennifer Connelly (A Beautiful Mind).
Carole told Carlo that she was fourteen when the crimes were happening, that they were all over the news. And She said : “Everyone was always talking about them. Many of them occurred just near where we lived. I mean blocks away. For the life of me, I don't know why, but I began fantasizing he... I mean the Stalker, would come in my room and rape me. Sick, I know. I'm... this is kind of hard for me to talk about, but it's the truth. I was, in fact, raped by my mother's boyfriend. I told my mother. She didn't believe me. I used to keep my window open and hoped he'd come in. Maybe... maybe I don't know I was trying to get back at my mother for, you know, allowing me to get raped, then not believing me. In any event, I used to think about that. Then when Richard was ar-rested, I really started having heavy sexual thoughts about him. He was-well, he was so cute and so bad at the same time. His badness drew me to him even more, you could say, you know. I was too young to go visit him then, but I did write him letters-love letters. Then, I... well, I grew out of it, you could say. Now I want to go see him. I know he's married, but this is between me and him.”
