Facts/Possible Answers:

All of the gems are intended to be sexless (except for Steven).

Steven universe isn't the only children's cartoon to recognize the LGBT community.

CN in general isn't the only channel to recognize the LGBT community. Ex: The Loud House, Clyde McBride has 2 fathers, and Luna Loud is hinted to have a crush on another girl, putting a 'love' letter into said girl's locker. (Aired on Nickelodeon)

A possible answer as to why this is (finally) happening, as more shows are produced for children, the more the LGBT community is common in every day life. For example, children will almost always be out with a parent/guardian when shopping, taking a walk, etc. There is always a chance that there could be something subtle that children could notice, such as two men holding hands, or two women, and so on. The way that these shows portray the community is in a completely healthy and beautiful manor, as should be. Not only that, but how the children see themselves. By being introduced in such a positive way at a semi-early/early age, could also introduce the fact that they are beautiful, no matter their preference, as they grow.

In conclusion, this is be the next step for the LGBT community. Let's keep pushing through, y'all!

Okay so I just got off the phone with them. I talked to a trans girl named Aurora & she was super helpful! She gave me a few doctors to talk to & encouraged me to seek therapy instead of just rushing to get my pills. She literally found a trans friendly therapist in my town & I would definitely recommend giving them a call!
