hunter.

hunter laughs. it’s breathy–like he’s fighting it. niko’s such a little shit. and hunter used to like that. they’d been almost friends, he thinks. and maybe hunter got a little attached. sometimes he fucks up in drawing lines between appropriate professionalism while he’s working, and it bit him in the ass with niko. the guy almost sold him out.

so he’s not gonna let this pass. if niko’s gonna talk shit, he better be ready for hunter to cash it in

he bends a little. leans in so they’re eye to eye.

“don’t be a bitch.”

there’s always been an air of authority around hunter -- maybe it had to do with the whole dealer/customer dynamic or something else but all niko knew for sure was that hunter could be intimidating. and niko, being as petty as he was, only urged him on. 

“sorry-- little bitch or big bitch, i only have two gears. what can you do?” he gave an exaggerated sigh and shrugged as he took another sip of his drink. 

was it niko’s fault that their fight had turned out so dramatic? after all, he had tried to explain himself, he just grew tired of it. 

“anyways, it’s my graduation night, hunter. don’t be a buzzkill.”

𝐢𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 recognize drunk or sober, it was niko’s. her rock, her brother from another mother; the idea of him graduating & leaving for good might’ve been one aspect of winnie’s life that had driven her to drinking so excessively tonight. she squeals immediately, catching up to him & throwing her arms around his neck, giggling into the sloppy hug. “ my dumb ass is drunk ! “

“i can see that now,” niko offers a small chuckle as he wraps his arms around her in return of her hug. “actually, more like smell it-- you reek,” he pulls back teasingly but leaves one arm wrapped around her back in support. last thing he needed was winnie drunkenly stumbling. “can’t believe you left the bonfire without even coming to find me. does this have to do with that whole weaning yourself off thing? because i don’t know if i’m emotionally prepared for that yet.”

「    𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘴𝘦  𝘨𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴  𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯  at  the  drink  in  his  hand  as  if  just  noticing  it ,  a  sheepish  blush  creeping  up  his  cheeks  as  he  hits  his  knee  against  niko’s .    “  one  of  us  has  to  make  sure  nobody  falls  in  the  fire ,  ”    and  he  sits  his  beer  at  his  feet  before  sitting  up  straighter .     “  i’m  about  to  lose  my  only  connection  to  the  cool  club  anyway .  ”

niko slaps his hand on chase’s back, “you might not know this but.. it doesn’t have to be you. just enjoy yourself, man, no need to worry.” he pats his shoulder before taking a swig of his own beer. “don’t be so dramatic-- if anything, the cool club’s gonna have an opening. and who better to fill my spot other than you?” niko asks, grinning as he turns to look at chase in hopes of lifting his spirits.

“well, we all do that. classes suck. it’s the people you miss.” jade chuckles along with him, clinking her drink and then taking a big gulp in celebration. “it doesn’t have to be the library.” she takes another sip before continuing,  “i’ve just gotten so used to seeing you at there is all. gonna miss having you there to keep me company.” it’s genuine. niko had made work a lot more enjoyable. reshelving books was the most mundane job ever, but when she had someone making her laugh while doing so, it wasn’t that bad. “aw, don’t make me sad! new york is so far away.” she sighs and playfully punches him on the arm. “let’s make the most of the night then – since it’s our last time seeing each other for a while or whatever.”

“the people here are special,” niko admits with a light tug of his lips. “yeah? here i thought i was becoming a nuisance,” he chuckles and takes a sip of his own drink, “to tell you the truth i’m actually not a big fan of libraries.” niko glances to jade for her reaction and the corners of his eyes crinkle as she punches his arm, trying to suppress a laugh. “can’t say i’ll come visit often but if you’re ever in new york city, just let me know and i’ll be sure to give you a tour around the place.” he tilts his chin up at her words, “maybe this is our chance to actually get to know each other. first thing’s first though -- do you want something to drink?”

𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙙𝙨  𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙘𝙝  𝙪𝙥  to  squish  his  cheeks  together ,  humming  and  smiling  when  he  whines  at  her .    “  disagree .    you’re  one  hundred  percent  my  baby .  ”    she  finally  completely  steps  away  from  him ,  shoulders  back  as  a  smug  smile  rests  on  her  features .    “  your  super  cool  roommate  only  helped  a  little .    you  did  all  the  hard  work  yourself .  ”    and  then  she’s  plopping  herself  onto  his  bed ,  looking  up  at  him  and  resting  her  chin  in  her  hands .    “  so  what’s  next  for  you ?    after  all  this  is  over ?  ”

niko cringes at the gesture, mostly because it reminds him of when his grandmother would pull his cheeks. “i’m still waiting for them to call me and say they’ve made a mistake and i’m not actually qualified to graduate but.. nothing yet,” he chuckles lightly, still in disbelief this day has come. “you mean after i fly back to new york and realize i can’t do shit with my degree?” niko shakes his head, “fuck if i know what’s next. i guess securing a job to pay off my student debt would be ideal but i don’t know, really.”

    “ riiiighttt , totally not in your nature , “ her voice are deep and sarcastic as she rolls her eyes at him. he rhead whips around eyes narrowing at his next words, “ i swear to god roman if you told a single soul that horrible lie, i will kill you and have no remorse , “ she points at him before letting out a short snort. her eyes follow his gaze to the pair of parents which she could only assume to roman’s “ at least they’re here ya know , i think some people’s didn’t even show up , “ at the mention of her own parents her the blonde’s smile faltered as she looked away pointedly, “ i tried to talk to them … it was just a lot of yelling to be honest , “

“i may have told justice but he’s also on my furry suspect list so i’m sure he won’t judge you,” a laugh bubbles from his chest, an amused grin on his cheeks as he enjoyed teasing the blonde. “i was almost sure mine weren’t gonna show up,” his lips thinned into a pressed smile. niko turns to jo and reaches to squeeze her arm. “hey.. don’t worry too much about them. i know it sucks right now but maybe they’ll come around one day.” he gives her a look in support and offers a change in subject. “are you coming to the bonfire? i wanna get shitfaced.”

“yeah?“ hunter’s got a branch in his hand, sticking it into the fire so the tip sparks when he holds it up. “things always aren’t so bad when you look back.” he drags the stick into the dirt, sketching his initials. one more year and he’ll be out too. and maybe he’ll miss the people, maybe some of the instructors–but hunter sure as hell won’t look back fondly on the late nights he worked to keep his student debt from drowning him, or semesters barely scraping together a c so the school didn’t kick him out.

“you still look like you’re a high school kid. how’s anyone gonna take you seriously?”

niko hums in thought, thinking back at the four years he spent at this school. of course there’s been some rough patches -- this past semester in particular, but generally he had a decent time. especially when hunter had been his dealer but that’s all a thing of the past now. 

“good to know i still have my youth,” he rolls his eyes and lets out a scoff at the other’s insult. nothing could damper niko’s mood tonight but it’d be a lie to say that he would let an opportunity to be salty towards the other slip. “it’s a shame you can’t say the same-- chain smoking really does fuck you up for the worse.”

open starter — event three. saturday, june fifteenth, post-bonfire

𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐡, 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐧𝐢𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐝𝐞𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐝𝐫𝐮𝐧𝐤. 𝐦𝐚𝐲𝐛𝐞 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 way that she’s stumbling around, completely alone on campus as she tries to find her way back to her dorm in the darkness, or it might be the way that she completely reeks of alcohol. or, it might even be because of the way that she’s giggling to herself, looking down at the ground to make sure that her feet are actually touching the ground after each step. she wasn’t some kind of lightweight, but she didn’t like feelings emotions — they had fucked her over far too often this past year. so, she drank. she drank until she felt good, & then she drank until she felt nothing at all. & then she left, all on her own. winnie uhm wasn’t known for having the best ideas, drunk or sober. this is especially evident by the way that she stops in her tracks when she realizes that she’s not the only one wandering campus & that there’s someone else nearby, close enough to yell at & address; & so that’s what she does. “ hey ! “ she lets out a fit of giggles afterward, uncharacteristic but totally expected from winnie uhm in her current state.

having finally called it a night -- or at least until he gets home and polishes off the wine bottle his parents got him for graduating, niko made a detour to walk through campus. something about leaving it had him wanting to spend more time there. ironic considering how many classes he had skipped this past semester. he doesn’t, however, think he’ll find anyone here -- “winnie?” he raises a brow as he walks over to her, slight concern written on his face, “what the hell is your dumbass thinking wandering campus alone at night?” winnie was like the little sister he never had, so naturally he felt responsible to make sure she was safe, especially after what happened to manon.
