For anyone confused about why this "sweet ad" is actually evil:

ring is passing the surveillance they collect to ice

ring is using these ID features to search for/identify people that ice wants to deport/kidnap/disappear, & using it to spy on Americans in general.

This ad is the company's gross & sneaky attempt to appeal to humans' kindness [ I'll be helping people find their pets!" ]

They are trying to trick more people into buying this tool that will be used as surveillance on people living in the USA

also probably trying to trick people into turning on features/settings that will make it easier for them to pass information to ice and other hostile governmental authorities

I called this ad propaganda the second I saw it and my dad got annoyed with me. Excuse me for not wanting to live in a fucking surveillance state. It’s too late. My parents already have a camera. But at least the street isn’t visible because we have fence around the front yard. People walking by are safe. They would have to come all the way up the driveway to be seen. But still.

It's sweet to think that changing these settings will meaningfully impact data collection, processing, and use.

I wrote that before I noticed the text admitting they'll ignore the settings at their discretion.

I don't know why they bothered to say they'll comply with warrants; they already hand over everything that governments ask them to and more, with or without a fucking warrant.

Remember that any fines (usually the only consequences) levied against these corps if a government tries to take them to account (very rare) long after the damage is already done are just part of the cost of doing business. It's nothing to them.

Remember when google owned nest nanny cams were hacked, allowing even more strangers* to surveil inside your home? Like watching your baby getting changed? If people accessing these cameras stopped giving themselves away by talking to people through the cameras, the breach may never have received as much publicity as it did; nest might never have acknowledged or disclosed the breach at all if their hands weren't forced by people talking about being harassed through their cameras.

Get rid of your stupid fucking internet connected cameras!

I don't give a single fuck about why you want it or why getting something that is privacy preserving/has no fucking internet connectivity is Too Hard.

* by even more strangers I mean even more than just anyone who works at nest and the companies they use for any data processing or infrastructure like cloud hosting.

Don't even get me started on modern cars' surveillance, either. I am so fucking tired.

Nora would absolutely be in the spirit, and Loki would be annoyed but also amused at all of the drinks she'd be getting and toasts she'd be making with the rowdy visitors. He would also, at some point, make himself look like one of them to slip into the crowd and flirt with her like they were strangers, which Nora would clock at once.

not using AI genuinely feels like the rest of the world is experiencing some kind of mass amnesia. if someone says they never use it, the immediate response is that can't be true because "everyone" uses it to write their emails or answer their questions. saw a comment suggesting that not using chatgpt to write an essay is "like the 90s". girl I graduated in 2021 and we weren't doing that! how is it that everyone has suddenly forgotten that they were entirely capable of doing these things all by themselves for their entire lives up until the past few years!! am I going crazy!!!
