went to a new optometrist today wearing my squid facts ‘save our freaks’ shirt from @sarahmackattack that has a strawberry squid on it. and i wasn’t even thinking about it but the optometrist walked in and he was like ‘oh what does your shirt say’ so i showed him and he was like ‘oh that’s neat!’ and then i thought he might like to know about strawberry squid eyes since they have weird eyes and he is an optometrist and all. so i was like ‘yeah it’s actually a real kind of squid called a strawberry squid, their eyes are really cool because they have one big yellow-green one and one small blue one’ and he kind of gasped and went ‘oh my god that’s so interesting i wonder why they have that. do you know what their retina composition is like?’ and i watched as he minimized my chart on the computer and started looking up images of strawberry squid and then he googled ‘strawberry squid retina composition’ and he was like ‘sorry we’ll get to your eye exam in a moment i just really want to find out’ LMAO 10/10 optometrist experience will be returning

okay so every time I see this post crop back up in queues and notifications I end up thinking about it. yuna getting really lovely, thoughtful, sometimes extravagant mothers day and birthday gifts from ilya never really understanding why hes going through all this effort even if she does appreciate it and thinks hes so so sweet for it all, even after the boys tell her and david about ilyas mother and the irina foundation it doesnt fully click for a while. it only comes together on some random day, ilya has a game later that night and he’s had lunch with yuna and david planned for a while and he shows up with the good vodka david likes and this small package of candies that ilya hands to her very shyly for the first time probably in his life, definitely since shes known him, and he explains with shaking hands that they were his mama’s favorite, and it was her birthday today.

yuna feels her heart break a little bit when he tells her that she would have been younger than her, maybe too young for how old her children are considering he had an older brother, but he thought about his mama when he was happy in the hollander home, and wanted to share his mamas favorite candy with the woman who was mama to his favorite person in the world. like they got to meet, in a way. and yuna realizes very suddenly that he does the birthdays and mothers days for both her and irina because she is the closest thing he has to a mother, and she looks at him and realizes with it that he is in some ways still 12, finding his mother, and she has never met a little boy so tall and tired when she pulls him into a hug and doesnt let go till david suggests they get inside for lunch.

I am so unbelievably fucking sick of AI tools. Every time I go to the doctor now, they start up by asking, "Is it all right if I use this AI voice translation software to record my notes?" while already setting it up, and then they look nonplussed when I tell them no. Like man I appreciate it takes you a modicum of extra time and concentration to type up things in my chart yourself, but that is in fact a loadbearing part of what I'm paying you to do! I want to know that the notes you take are accurate, or at least accurate to your assessment in the moment! "Oh but we read through the AI summary to check that it's accurate" I don't care! I don't fucking care!! Even if you did it right after my appointment, that's no guarantee you'll remember every beat of what was discussed, because now you're trying to remember thirty minutes' worth of conversation after the fact instead of just typing a few sentences at five minute intervals! And that's the best case scenario - how many patients do you see a day? What fucking good is it if you're reviewing all these summaries in bulk after a ten hour shift, or a day later, or two? How are you gonna catch any errors or hallucinations when you barely remember our appointment? Whereas when you type it yourself, your brain builds connections between what's being heard and what's being written. You remember more. I want you to remember more! I do not want AI in my fucking medical care! Fuck!

So...how much of the bad discourse surrounding Steven Universe is just because people were really hoping that the Gems would beat up Andy DeMayo in "Gem Harvest"?

I was astonished to learn that there was controversy around this episode, because I felt like it was just kind of a normal children's cartoon about getting along with difficult relatives; and then I looked it up and learned that it had the extremely inauspicious timing of airing right after Trump's 2016 victory, and, yeah, okay, I can understand why a children's fantasy about reconciling with your obnoxious conservative relatives and getting them to accept your alternate family structure would play rather poorly at the time.

I think that Rebecca Sugar probably assumed, like most of the world that wasn't my specific flavour of extremely online in 2016, that Clinton would crush Trump and that this episode would maybe help to smooth over divisions; but of course what ended up happening is that an episode about how you should be empathetic towards your bigoted relatives ended up airing just as your bigoted relatives were going around victoriously hate-criming people in the street.

Watching it now, though, it ends up feeling wistful more than anything. Like, yeah, sure, it doesn't work like that, and we all know that now...But wouldn't it be nice if it did? It feels like a pleasant dream.

I don’t think I’m an asshole. I try, sincerely try, to be a decent person.

But. I’ve noticed that on the relatively rare occasion when I literally have no deadlines, no schedule, no worries at all, that I am in fact just much kinder, more patient, and more helpful. When I have no stress on me, I become that guy who will miss his train to explain how the metro works. I will carry stuff for you. It’s just… I’m a better person when I’m entirely relaxed.

And I think maybe that’s across the board? That maybe we’re all low-key kinda stressed all the time, and that makes us more hurried, less inclined to help, less compassionate… simply more selfish and less caring.

Which doesn’t mean “You’re stressed and that makes you EVIL!!!!”. I don’t think people are necessarily like that. But maybe we just have less kindness to share when we’re like that. Maybe you’re normally a saint and the crushing weight makes you just be pretty nice most of the time. Maybe you’d normally be sullen and angry, and it makes you into a huge asshole who actively makes things worse for everyone. Maybe it makes a big difference, maybe it makes a little one. I think maybe we have trouble being nice to each other because of that, though. Because we’re always rushed and worried and stressed out all the time.
