@plaguedocboi is absolutely right! This is a Geckolepis! You might remember the one we described a few years ago, Geckolepis megalepis, that went as far as becoming a feature on Snapchat of all places.

And resulted in this *spectacular* art by @leotide:

There are five currently recognised species. I would hazard a guess that the one pictured above is G. typica, but these geckos are very hard to ID.

As a defensive tactic it seems impractical

It’s actually super effective. The scales, which are full of bone, and skin stick behind in the mouth of a predator like a snake or a bigger gecko, and the Geckolepis escapes naked but safe. The skin is weirdly sticky, too.

The whole thing doesn’t take too long to regenerate, amazingly. It’s a very cool version of autotomy—far beyond just losing the tail (which most non-snake squamates can do).
