Card spotlight: The World

The World completes our Major Arcana and represents completion, achievement, understanding, unity, integration, fulfilment, sense of belonging, wholeness, and harmony.

Our World is the Sage of the Six Paths, Otsutsuki Hagoromo. A son of Kaguya, it was Hagoromo who brought chakra and ninshu into the wider world. The jinchuuriki of the Ten-Tails, the Sage later separated the bijuu into nine more sentient and reasonable creatures. He was also the person who set his two sons in the Wheel of Reincarnation forever bound to one another; the influence of the Sage has never left the shinobi world, although knowledge of him faded.

The Sage of the Six Paths as The World was designed and created by @arr-u, who had this to say:

"The baby bijuu surround Hagoromo to represent his accomplishments. Most of them are placed like the four elements would be, but the Kyuubi / Kurama, as the bijuu we see most of and in his Yin and Yang halves, is acting as the wreath. The wreath represents a cycle of completion and new beginnings.

Inspired by the two wands on the original World card, I remembered the image of the Sage with Naruto and Sasuke, with a Sun and Moon staff visible, and decided to split that staff into his two wands."

Card spotlight: Judgement

Judgement can represent self-evaluation, renewal, rebirth, purpose, reflection, decisiveness, apportioning blame, forgiveness, and absolution.

Our Judgement is Pain / Uzumaki Nagato, represented here in his aspects as Nagato injured and drained by chakra rods, and the puppeted body of his beloved friend Yahiko, one of his Six Paths.

Due to his all-powerful Rinnegan eyes, once Nagato stepped into his power in response to the death of his friend, it became his place to judge the worth of individuals, but also of the Akatsuki plan to save the world and make eternal peace. His vision was in fact flawed and manipulated, just as the card can mean that you are judging or being judged too harshly. Nagato was redeemed at his end when Naruto's optimism spurred re-evaluation of his worldview, and he let go of his revenge to spend his power rejuvenating all the lives he took in Konoha.

"The art style for this was inspired by Art Nouveau.

I used the Rinnigan eye as the background because it sees all (giving a feeling of being perceived).

Nagato and his Path are the one judging and the enforcement of judgement.

Nagato's pose, with one palm up, and his clothing, are refrences to Jesus; this was inspired by the end of Nagato's story, sacrificing his life for the lives of Konoha after judging their lives worthy."

Card spotlight: The Sun

The Sun represents happiness, success, optimism, vitality, joy, confidence, warmth, and truth.

The Sun represents the dawn which follows the darkest of nights. Our Sun is Uzumaki Naruto, whose birth was on the night a terrible tragedy befell Konoha, and who had a difficult and lonely childhood before growing up to be loved and respected by the whole Village. Despite harsh treatment, Naruto's determined optimism and good cheer never failed.

Naruto as The Sun was decided, designed, and created by @anothernarutofanaccount, who said:

"I’m sure all of us have heard Naruto be referred to as “the sun”, “sunshine boy” or something similar. When we were all throwing ideas around in the discord server, I threw this idea in and decided I wanted to do something new and try it. Upon looking at websites like Labyrinthos I came to learn the sun’s true meaning and decided that fit Naruto even better. The face was actually a redraw from what I considered one of his happiest moments: meeting Kushina."

Card spotlight: The Moon

The Moon represents illusion, intuition, uncertainty, confusion, complexity, secrets, the subconscious; twin possibilities.

Our Moon is Haruno Sakura. It was important to include her in this Tarot and she fits perfectly here, between her two teammates, giving light which, while dimmer than the Sun, can bring clarity and understanding.

The Moon tells us that everything is not as it seems. Sakura's Inner self represents the subconscious, which may either be bringing your attention to some information the conscious mind has missed - or presenting emotions previously pushed down deep, which must be addressed. The light of the Moon is your intuition, leading you through this darkness.

Sakura as The Moon was designed and created by twitter user kyvtae, who said:

"My main inspiration was the moon card's representation of fears + illusions! i wanted to include a reference to the Infinite Tsukuyomi in some way (since that's the main fear + illusion throughout the series), and decided to emulate opening 18 (line), with the moon standing in for the crystal, since that's one of the openings during said Infinite Tsukuyomi."

Card spotlight: The Star

The Star represents hope, inspiration, faith, renewal, healing, and serenity.

The Star indicates that you have come through your tough times with a renewed sense of yourself and the world around you, and you are open to healing the wounds of the past.

Our Star is Uchiha Sasuke, designed and created by @vinniebean:

"The Star symbolizes hope, faith, and renewal, which are all really important parts of Sasuke's journey. Even his path of vengeance against his brother was guided by a sort of twisted hope, through a desire to get stronger and make things right. Just like the Star comes after the "scary" transformative cards of the Major Arcana (Death and the Tower) this scene I'm depicting is the moment of transformation after Itachi's death: when Sasuke decides to rename team Hebi to team Taka. He's shedding the clothes he wore when training with Orochimaru as he stands among the crashing waves, with the waters of his conscious and subconscious mind flowing through his fingers and joining the vast ocean. The waves are also based on Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa": the wave he depicted may have been a "rogue" wave, sudden and cataclysmic, and I did my best to imitate how the edges of the waves have little claws (or for more hawk imagery, talons!)

The seven stars could symbolize any number of things traditionally (the Pleiades or the seven "planets" for example) so that's up to interpretation. The large 8 pointed star is the morning/evening star, and also looks like a compass rosette, giving direction. The colors of the sky might be at sunset, or sunrise: a time of change.

His pose is based off the crescent pose in yoga, partly because I wanted to include a bit of moon symbolism, but also because it feels more active than the kneeling pose in the original card. He's stepping forward, curved like a drawn bow, ready to take flight like the hawk soaring above him."

Card spotlight: The Tower

The Tower can represent chaos, sudden upheaval, trauma, disaster, revelations, confusion, violence, or natural disasters.

Typically the Tower card shows figures making a desperate escape from the broken Tower, from the turmoil and destruction inside, to plummeting uncontrollably outside. The Tower shows us that something built on shaky foundations or false premises only takes one hit to be knocked down; the destruction must happen in order to clear out the old ways and welcome something new.

Our Tower is Uchiha Madara, one of the founders of Konoha. He later broke away to enact his own plans, kidnapping and brainwashing a young Uchiha Obito to further his work. We can see his appearance in The Tower representing either his need to leave Konoha, and the concept of peace that he saw as flawed after the death of his last brother; or as a reflection on the Eye Of The Moon plan and how influenced it was by Zetsu, who lied to Madara and manipulated him to achieve Zetsu's own goals.

The Tower was decided, designed, and created by @rosyhatake, who has this to say:

"The falling god! I took inspiration from Catholic imagery (which I saw at a museum recently) and gave him a God-like halo! I drew the God Fruit in there as well since it represents godhood and is the way to reach godhood in Naruto.

Madara killed thousands for his goals and plans so I layered the foundation of his towers with skulls. He was cut in half by Kaguya so I represented that with the tower cut in half. His look of shock and horror is from his own downfall as he plunges to the ground!"

Card spotlight: The Devil

The Devil represents feeling trapped, empty, and unfulfilled; addiction, obsession, excess, powerlessness, and limitations.

Otsutsuki Kaguya suits the role of Devil well. Trapped and sealed inside the moon, she couldn't find fulfillment in the family she created, and obsesses over gaining power - she desires nothing less than all of the chakra / power of life in the world.

The Devil card was designed and created by @chipeurtheshipper, who says:

"This card is broadly inspired by classic tarot The Devil cards. However, in usual representations there's a female and male entity chained; I chose not to use these since they don't well suit the Naruto storyline.

Instead, Kaguya offers the chakra fruit to the viewer, directly addressing the audience. The chakra fruit here represents the temptation of physical things and of power; in Naruto it granted such great power to Kaguya, she killed a clan member to obtain it and betrayed her mission. It's also a reference to the apple from the bible, the fruit of temptation.

After discussion with @sevenhelz about our "paired" cards, I decided to include the God tree behind Kaguya. The tree produces the chakra fruit, the root (pun intended) of earthly desires. My canon-esque depiction of the tree is feeding itself by draining people, them being consumed by desire.

Trees are often important in creation mythos, but this particular tree does not represent life, it represents death (literally sucking the life out of people, and also symbolically with its dead grey colouring).

To tie in with partner card, The Lovers, I used a golden snake from Klimt's Hygieia as jewellery for Kaguya. This is again a wink to Christian mythology, the story of the apple and the snake. I positioned it to give the impression of a shackle/chain around her wrist - she's chained to her earthly desires.

To colour the piece I mostly worked from canon; however the purple of chakra fruit and the gold yellow are a close match to those used in The Lovers.

For lighting I decided to use a moonlight vibe, because Kaguya's the moon lady. Also the full moon is associated with femininity, witches, a time for evil magic, yet also purity and cleansing. Things happening at night is spookier, perfect for Halloween Tarot."

Card spotlight: Temperance

Temperance represents balance, patience, calm, tranquillity, harmony.

Temperance completes the second leg of the fool's journey, through the inner mind; Jiraiya completes the trio of Sannin. As a team, we wanted to include Jiraiya in this tarot. He is an incredibly powerful shinobi, who often acts rather foolish; however, he does represent patience and calm in his role as spymaster. When situations arise that make him get serious, his Toad Sage form relies on a sense of balance and tranquility, letting energy flow in from nature. Thus here we see him with Ma and Pa toad, in his Sage form, with his weaponised hair spread like wings.

Jiraiya as Temperance was created by @ne-ono, who said: "It was @sevenhelz who actually came up with the main visual elements of the card ー Jiraiya in sage mode with the two frogs on his shoulders, pouring sake.

I simply wanted to draw frogs. 🐸

Borrowing symbolism from the original card, I’ve placed Jiraiya in Myoboku-zan, one toe dipped in their famous oil. As the “fool,” Jiraiya learns temperance on Myoboku-zan, culminating in achieving Sage Mode.

I tried a new coloring style for this, studying from @kokodrawings. This also turned into an exercise in restraint and not chasing perfectionism as I lined and colored the card."

Card spotlight: Death

Death represents transformation, endings, change, release, and rebirth.

Our Death is Orochimaru, chosen for his themes of rebirth and immortality, with a nod to how much death he caused in canon.

No-one can destroy Death, just as nobody managed to destroy Orochimaru; while he did spend some time apparently dead, he returned in a way that changed him and his way of life. Appropriately, the Death card symbolises that one major phase in your life is ending, and another about to begin.

@bloodredsugarknight designed and created the card, and had this to say: "For the design/planning of the card, I started knowing nothing about tarot other then the fact that they could be used for fortune-telling, but I really like Orochimaru and his design, so I volunteered for the card. I wanted to really emphasize the Death symbolism with the half skeleton and the Shinigami looming in the background similar to when he revived the past Hokages. I also made sure to draw as many details from the original card as I could without it looking out of place, with the two Hokage towers framing the piece with the sunset in the middle, the boat for escorting the dead to the afterlife, the black clothes, and white five petaled rose on his cheek for immortality."

Card spotlight: The Hanged Man

The Hanged Man represents sacrifice, waiting, uncertainty, contemplation, surrender, and acceptance after facing what we have made of our lives.

Our Hanged Man is Uchiha Itachi. The Hanging Man is believed to be positioned there of his own free will; Itachi understands that his position is a sacrifice that he needed to make in order for his brother and his Village to progress forward.

Caught between Village and Clan as a child, he made a terrible choice, and spent the rest of his life suffering the consequences, awaiting the final justice he expected to receive by the hand of his younger brother Sasuke.

The Hanged Man was decided, designed and created by @stygian-blu. Blue said: "Itachi is suspended with the shuriken wire that the Uchiha use in their signature shuriken jutsu, behind him is dark endless woods, symbolic of how lost his life is in and because of Konoha. He is lit from below because I think Itachi saw his sacrifice as his salvation, in his own misguided way. The butterfly on his hand is the fleeting mirage of hope (Sasuke killing him, and then being safe and strong). Fluttering around Itachi is a leaf hurricane as another nod to Konoha, but the leaves are brown and dead, since Itachi lived most of his life in the dark underbelly of its ANBU. The Hanged Man's halo is a rainbow mainly for visual interest against the dull colors of everything else, but rainbows also always gave me a sense of transience and temporariness, which I thought fit well with how short-lived and fleeting peace and love -Itachi's deepest wishes and driving forces behind his actions- were in his life."

Card spotlight: Justice

Justice represents fairness, balance, truth, law, cause and effect, and accountability. It is the archetype of honesty, which is essential for restoring balance and harmony.

Our Justice is Senju Tobirama, a man integral to the foundation of peace and formation of Konoha. Paired with his rival Uchiha Izuna, his design by @sevenhelz mirrors The High Priestess card.

@sevenhelz said: "For this design I blended the symbolic items of Justice with the style and themes of @n0pepng's High Priestess Izuna. It was suggested from the beginning that the rivals be paired this way and when I took over this card I was determined to honour that pairing. Once again I called upon @vinniebean for help understanding what I was trying to show.

Tobirama sits on a throne in the traditional robes of the Hokage, with the Hat symbolic of his power hung on the wall behind him, in place of the red moon of the High Priestess. The clarity in thought which is required to dispense justice is usually symbolised by the square on the crown Justice wears; in this case the Hat itself is square.

The two pillars of the original card are replaced by a Torii Gate to mirror The High Priestess card.

The scales represent how intuition should balance logic; they are designed as a nod to the Senju vajra, with the top part looking like a Buddhist vajra. This in turn represents holding lightning in one hand to shatter illusions, and diamond in the other to endure unscathed. In this way the vajra symbolises enlightenment and strength, both key aspects of Tobirama's personality.

The sword of course is his Sword of the Thunder God, channelling lightning chakra and literally lighting the area around it.

This card was created with fineliner pen and coloured pencils."

Card spotlight: The Wheel of Fortune

The Wheel of Fortune can represent luck, destiny, change or upheaval, a decisive moment, cycles of life, and divine timing.

The Wheel of Fortune is one of the most highly symbolic cards in the deck, filled with signs that each have their own meaning. The Wheel turns continually, communicating that life is made up of both good and bad times, and that the cycle is one that we cannot control. Obito was a great choice by @ghosts-and-chaos, with his path (and Kakashi's) decided by strong decisive moments - turning points for these young boys to change their ideals, and grow into new selves.

@ghosts-and-chaos said this about the design: "My card started out as an idea about how Obito was stuck in the Wheel of fate.

He goes along unknowingly with a plan made millennia before him by Zetsu, shown by the way he’s stuck to the Wheel and also stuck to his Mangekyo (something that connected him with Kakashi and to their grief over Rin).

He is watched over by a tengu (guardian spirit) and has a snake whispering in his ear, representing the lies he was told over the years.

Behind the Wheel, representing the four elements, are things that define Obito. We see the cave-in where he “died”; the back of Rin showcasing how he didn’t actually know the whole situation, with Kakashi’s Chidori as the focal point; Minato’s Rasengan - something that was his sensei’s and which he faced twice, against Minato and against Naruto; and finally we have his Fire Vortex jutsu which he uses after revealing his identity.

The Juubi is behind him about to swallow him whole because that’s what chasing the Infinite Tsukoyomi did to him.

Overall it’s meant to symbolize how, upright, the Wheel of Fortune represents adaptability - something Obito accepted at the end of time; versus the reversed Wheel of Fortune meaning of being stuck in a negative cycle like the one Obito was stuck in."

Card spotlight: The Hermit

The Hermit represents soul-searching, introspection, being alone, and inner guidance.

Our Hermit is Hatake Kakashi, standing in a snowy field of graves. The Hermit invites you to step away from the noise of the outside world and turn inward to find the answers within yourself; Kakashi's quiet contemplation represents this perfectly.

This design came from @vinniebean, who said: "When I started designing the card, I knew I wanted it to be close to the Rider-Waite-Smith Hermit card: grayish sky, snowy background, and the Hermit figure holding up the lamp that symbolizes knowledge. On the surface this card seems more like the Hermit reversed (loneliness and reclusiveness) but underneath lies the upright meaning (introspection and wisdom). Grief is a process and something that Kakashi is still in the middle of working through before and during the series, but he gains wisdom through it all.

The lamp representing knowledge contains the Chidori-- knowledge he got from Minato and passed down to Sasuke, for better or worse-- and its cold light is the brightest thing in the picture. Everything else is kind of in shadow, and I went with purplish shadows in the middle because it's Rin's color, and because purple-blue-gray colors remind me of a bruise, which is like grief. Kakashi's scar matches the red of the Will of Fire monument, and the long lines of graves all curve towards that and look almost infinite. The monument itself is cloaked in fog, or smoke-- fire is a good thing sometimes, but fire also consumes."

Looking underneath the underneath as Kakashi would, we can see how strong the symbolism is in the design. Thanks @vinniebean for taking this on.

Card Spotlight: Strength

Strength symbolises inner strength, courage, persuasion, influence, and compassion. The Strength card represents tapping into your higher self to overcome a challenge, and confronting, accepting and taming hidden fears.

Our Strength is Tsunade, who overcame her own greatest fear and became the leader of Konoha. As well as her bodily strength, the compassion and patience Tsunade shows with her own self as well as others is extremely appropriate for the card. Tsunade is pictured having tapped into the power usually hidden in her Strength of a Hundred seal to carry her former self, who was traumatised by loss; in a sense, she will always carry that history with her.

Tsunade as Strength was designed and created by @richard189381184, who said: "To be honest, I was totally clueless about what I was going to do at first. We discussed some ideas in the server and I ran with them. The blood rain symbolizes her phobia of blood, and the light streaming through the clouds is representative of her eventually facing that fear. She's carrying her younger self from the night of Dan's death- hence the necklace. I wanted to symbolize her saving herself, sort of reassuring that things do get better, and her willingness to try and pull herself out of the pit she fell into for a while. She became stronger in more ways than just physical."

Card Spotlight: The Chariot

The Chariot represents willpower and initiative; ambition, self-discipline, focus, and courage in the face of the unknown.

Our Chariot is Maito Gai, with hints of him carrying his eternal rival Hatake Kakashi. The Chariot challenges us to take life into our own hands and steer with determination, and illustrates that victory does not come from the attainment of a goal, but instead occurs at the exact moment you choose courage instead of fear. These values are integral to how Gai approaches life.

Normally the driver of the Chariot is considered to be in control, but the piggyback scene this draws from has Kakashi chakra-exhausted and needing help; Gai takes the initiative to carry him to safety.

The Chariot was designed and created by @illtakethatroad, who said: "I wanted to create The Chariot because of how it's treated me in my Persona games; in these, your relationships with people are represented by a card of the Major Arcana (based on that specific person's characteristics), and all of my Chariots are my best characters.

I would like to give @vinniebean credit for choosing Gai for the role. In the early stages of deciding on characters, she pointed out that Gai matched better than who I originally had in mind and I agreed. The second she brought up Gai, I thought of the iconic piggyback from canon and it wouldn't leave my brain.

I initially wanted to work in a stained glass style for this, but soon I remembered the faceless style used by Genshin Impact in some of its cutscenes. I hadn't tried it before, so I'm glad it turned out well."

Card Spotlight: The Lovers

The Lovers represents choice: breaking away from what is expected, following our desire to a state of love, to a valuable, lasting, supportive relationship which leads to a new understanding of life.

Our Lovers are Sai and Yamanaka Ino. The meanings of the card are perfect for the pair. When Sai was captured and under a genjutsu Ino used her family jutsu to delve into his mind and help resolve his inner crisis and his loneliness; their mutual trust and support begins there, and Sai grows from a seemingly emotionless Root agent to an integrated self. Eventually they marry, with Ino going against people's prejudice to do so.

The Lovers was designed and created by @sevenhelz, also the main co-ordinator of the event. He says: "I didn't know much about tarot previously, but when The Kiss occurred to me as a base for The Lovers I thought it would be beautiful. I asked @vinniebean about the symbolism I should include and realised that the Tree of Life is another well-known Klimt piece from his gold period; the tree I've drawn is a little thinner, but it follows the patterns pretty clearly. I used some of the flowers from that painting below the tree in the flower meadow, which is otherwise drawn directly from The Kiss and only very slightly supplemented with flowers inspired by other Klimt paintings and patterns. The Tree of Knowledge is my own design, based a little bit on apple trees, but instead growing Chakra Fruits - here I collaborated with @chipeurtheshipper, who created Kaguya as The Devil, to design our fruits similarly. The snake design is flipped from Klimt's Hygieia, and the trunk of the tree behind the snake roughens into a snakeskin pattern inspired by Klimt's Water Snakes paintings.

Other details came from the original character design; the hearts on Ino's dress represent the shape of the hand sign she uses for her family jutsu, and the tiny snakes and mice on Sai's clothing refer to his ink animals. Sai typically wears black and grey with a little red highlight, but Ino wears a lot of purple, so I applied artist's prerogative and gave them both purple clothing. It wasn't obvious to me before, but there are sections in the middle of them which could belong to either character, and I wanted to retain that sense of them being so close as to almost be conjoined.

The last point to note is that that the flames of the Tree of Life are drawn directly from the symbol of the Will of Fire in Konoha. I was delighted to realise how neatly the concept lined up.

It was obviously important to me to include a lot of fine detail, which was quite tricky given the size of the piece. I normally outline my work with either paint pen or fineliner, but either of those would have limited me here; Ino's spirals and the linework in her dress are so close that paint marker would destroy the piece, and fineliner doesn't take well to being wetted so would've limited my options for colouring thereafter. I decided to outline with (very sharp) coloured pencils, which gave me a great range of colours to choose, and then I filled with watercolour pencils. I love the "painted" effect watercolour pencils can give, and although it softened some of the linework as I painted, I'm really pleased with the outcome overall."

Card Spotlight: The Hierophant

The Hierophant represents Doctrine: our submission and responsibility to societal beliefs, and a mediated experience of the Divine.

Our Hierophant is Uzumaki Mito, who married Senju Hashirama as part of an interclan alliance, and took on the burden - and enormous power - of holding the Kyuubi as the first jinchuuriki.

Georgie says: "Mito and Hashirama had at least partially a political marriage, which means accepting the responsibilities and, to some extent, the beliefs of the clan she married into. The Senju/Uzumaki political alliance was already important, and from the pairing of Mito and Hashirama came what would arguably be the greatest weapon of all time: Jinchuuriki. For these reasons I believe Mito makes the perfect Hierophant. The Hierophant is also a priest who teaches the priestlings - in this case, the next generations of Kyuubi jinchuuriki, shown at the bottom of the card. The banner symbols in the background obviously represent Konoha and Uzushio, showing the wider importance of the Senju/Uzumaki alliance, which was furthered by the later jinchuuriki generations also being Uzumaki. I drew Mito on Kurama as her throne partly for my own enjoyment, but also because being jinchuuriki places her as a mediator for the power of the bijuu. Kurama is an integral part of her life and role."
