Welcome to the Alola Region!
Today, the Pokemon Company released another video formally introducing us to the Alola region and many of the characters we saw in the trailer. It started off, however, with the full rundown of the version legendaries Solgaleo and Lunala.
Solgaleo is Psychic/Steel type and its ability, Full Metal Body, prevents stat changes. There is presumably more to this ability, however, as Clear Body also prevents stat changes. Solgaleo’s signature move, Sunsteel Strike looks fantastic and is likely Steel type.
Lunala is Psychic/Ghost type with the ability Shadow Shield, making both version legendaries part Psychic type. Unfortunately, there wasn’t a look at Shadow Shield in the newest video, but it probably functions similarly to Full Metal Body. Moongeist Beam, its signature attack, looks phenomenal as well and appears to have (aside from the coolest name in series history) either a Psychic or Ghost type as either would be super effective against Gengar.
The island revealed in the last video turns out to be just one island in a chain of five, one of which is artificial (according to the Pokemon Company Twitter). We can see two more volcanoes, one of which has some sort of crystalline structure on top of it (likely where players will battle the Elite Four), and an area that looks like a desert. The small island all the way on the far left seems like the most likely candidate for the starting island and if the island on the far right has Victory Road, it seems likely that players will work their way across the archipelago from left to right.
Your cousin, who was already the first person to greet you in Alola, is also apparently the professor. This raises the question of who the guy who gives the player their starter pokemon is.
This is the first we’ve seen of Lillie, who may act as an additional rival for the player or as a guide character introducing players to new areas.
Hau is likely your primary rival in Alola, though not much more is known about him.
The video closes with one of the strangest reveals to date:
There’s a Rotom… in your Pokedex….
Truth be told, I think it’s really interesting. The Rotomdex (as I’m calling it until we get an official name) calls itself “A whole new way for people and Pokemon to communicate.” Presumably this will include a feature similar to Pokemon Amie as the way for pokemon and people to communicate.
Rotodex!
So the Rotodex will function with a detailed minimap that tracks your progress on the bottom screen, a new feature for the Pokemon series. You could always track your progress on the region map, but that had very few precise details.
Possible Synergy Stone? Maybe Ash-Greninja will make an appearance in this way. Are those multiple slots? Could the one Mega rule change?

More Pokemon Sun and Moon News in June
Friday morning, the Pokemon Company’s official Twitter account announced more news for Pokemon Sun and Moon would be released on June 2 at 9 a.m. EST. With details on the starters already revealed, the new information will likely be the official names and types of the version legendaries and a closer look at the Alola region. That said, many fans are still speculating that Sun and Moon may feature Burst Evolution, and the June announcement could resolve those rumors one way or the other. We’ll find out in just under two weeks.
Still reeling from the arrangement of Girl in the Tower, the end credits music of King’s Quest VI, that plays at various points through Chapter 3 of the newest King’s Quest.
Thursday, the official Nintendo of America and Nintendo of Europe Twitter accounts announced Monster Hunter Generations will release on July 15 in their respective regions. This release will coincide with the release of a special edition New Nintendo 3DS XL; blue in the Americas and red in Europe.
Monster Hunter Generations, or Monster Hunter X (Cross) as it was called in Japan, includes monsters and environments spanning the entire Monster Hunter series. For a breakdown of the original announcement trailer, go here.
Okay, now that I’ve made my announcement post, I’m just going to gush a little about everything we saw announced today, starting with this little guy right here:
Look at this adorable little guy. I am generally a sucker for the grass starters, and Rowlet here is no different. Owls are some of my favorite animals and I love the grass/flying type combo. Also, look at that little leaf bowtie. You can’t look at this little borb and his bowtie and not want to hug it.
Honestly, the first thing I thought when I saw this guy was that it was going to be a massive edgelord, but it’s grown on me. This starter is pretty lit-ten. I’m hoping it gets a dark secondary type, though a part of my brain is calling for a poison type, which would be a new and interesting type combo.
Popplio is a mixed bag for me. On one hand, I love how silly it is in some of its animations, but it almost feels a little too silly to me. I’m feeling an eventual secondary fairy type from it, but at this point I’m just hoping it gets a secondary type at all, unlike Blastoise, Feraligatr and Samurott.
These guys right here are some impressive legendaries. I haven’t been this pleased with the design of both of a version’s legendaries in a long time. We don’t know their names or their types, but I’m feeling fairy from the lion and dark from the bat. I’m hoping I’m wrong though, simply because that would make them exactly the same type matchup as Xerneas and Yveltal (though that bat is significantly cooler than Yveltal).
The rival and the professor are poc, and that is just incredibly refreshing and important. This is a region based off of Hawaii, and I was honestly very scared they were going to whitewash it. However, not only is the professor a poc, but our rival is too.
Look at this region, just look at it. The burned-out volcano, the reefs, the mountains, that beautiful little town, the nice little city, the view of the ocean at night, etc. Everything we’ve seen so far in this region shows it to be one of the most, if not the most, visually stunning regions to date.
I could not be more excited to explore the Alola region with my Rowlet on November 18.
Pokemon Sun and Moon Starters, Legendaries and Region Revealed
Today, the starters and flagship legendaries of Pokemon Sun and Moon were revealed via the Pokemon Company’s official YouTube channel. There’s Rowlet, the grass/flying owl (and my personal favorite); Litten, the fire cat; and Popplio, the water seal. Now, Popplio and Litten may (and probably will) get secondary types in later evolutions, but for now they’re just fire and water type. If I had to hazard a guess though, I think Litten could get a secondary dark type and Popplio could get fairy type.
The flagship legendaries for each version were also revealed, though only their appearance and version affiliation are currently known. That said, they look excellent, and the video ends with a shot of the box art of Sun and Moon, as well as the official release date of November 18, 2016.
This video also gave a long look at the environment of the newly announced Alola region. This name and the design of the region pretty definitively confirms fan theories that the region in Sun and Moon is based off of Hawaii. Through this look at Alola, we know that our cousin is the first person to welcome us to the region, we see the new professor and a person who may well be our new rival. The Alola region appears to have reefs, widespread mountains, ancient monuments, a hollowed-out volcano and a large (though not on the scale of Castellia or Lumiose) city.
So, what do you think of the new region? Which starter will you pick? Which version? Let me know.
More Sun and Moon News Incoming
Late Thursday, Junichi Masuda announced via Twitter that more Pokemon Sun and Moon news would be arriving on Tuesday May 10 at 21:00 JST (or 8 a.m. EST for those of us in the Americas). While this isn’t much information to go on, fans have already begun to speculate about the information to be revealed, ranging from simple information on the starters and region to showcasing the theorized “burst evolution” mechanic sweeping its way through social media. Will we see a new evolution mechanic with mega evolution still so fresh in our minds? Will this just be an introduction to the starters or the region most fans agree is based off of Hawaii? What do you think?
Release Information For Next Zelda Title and NX
Late Tuesday night (Pacific Time), Nintendo announced via their official Twitter account that “The new Legend of Zelda will be the focus of E3 2016. It will launch simultaneously on both WiiU and NX in 2017″
Not only does this confirm the rumors of a cross-platform release, but it means we will be getting the official reveal of the NX at this year’s E3. The NX will also be launching in March 2017, according to a Nintendo Facebook post.
This means the NX is likely compatible with amiibo as well, since the Wolf Link amiibo is also compatible with the next Legend of Zelda title. E3 is less than two months away, with press conferences starting June 12.
