Y'ALL this is exciting

as hell! Idk how many of you are familiar with chytrid fungi, but they cause a nasty disease in amphibians called chytridiomycosis, where the fungus infected and spreads across the skin. Amphibians both breathe and absorb water through their skin, so once the infection spreads enough it makes it difficult for them to breathe and drink. It's often deadly and has been introduced all over the world, likely from people releasing captive amphibians into the wild. Research has linked chytridiomycosis to the extinction of over 90 species, and is considered one of the primary causes of the global amphibian population crisis we're fighting.

Worst of all, there is no cure viable enough to use on wild populations.

This 'hothouse' method, if it continues to prove effective, would be a cheap and easily-implemented tool to help wild frogs cure themselves!! This could help save dozens -- if not hundreds -- of species from extinction!

This is really interesting, and so important.

The conservation world is going to extreme lengths to try to find a way to help amphibians survive chytrid. It swept the world really quickly and it's absolutely just nuked a lot of wild frog populations, which has had nasty fall-out effects on the ecosystems they live in and the food chain there. Researchers are testing things like "vaccinating" frogs with pre-exposure, and searching for wild survivors of certain species to try to breed populations with some genetic resistance. The biosecurity protocols at breeding centers are incredibly strict to protect the resident animals.

And... maybe just giving them access to areas of higher heat could help, according to this study. Mind blowing. And it's not super high heat either - they're talking about a difference between 18C (64F) and 30C (86F) - like that's really achievable with greenhouse type materials that don't need a separate heater.

There's still a lot of practical stuff to work out re: if it works to implement frog saunas for wild populations, and I don't think it's a magic bullet solution, but it's really need to see progress being made. Everything helps.

When I say "connect with nature" I don't just mean the aesthetic forests with deer and beautiful flowers.

I mean the weeds growing through concrete, the fungus that grows on the rotten shed, the nettles that always seem to return and the scary, spindly cellar spider in the corner of the bathroom.

Nature is not always pretty or magical - the pigeons and seagulls you swat at are nature too, the wasps and flies that hover by your meals are animals too, store-bought strawberries and the leaves that fall from your neighbour's tree are not all that different from the Giant Sequoias and it's seeds.

If you want to connect and understand nature, I mean *really* connect to it, in it's entirety, you have to seek out and learn about the ugly, scary and mundane things as well. You don't have to like it, just don't forget that it's there.

Sometimes you just went on a fandom gif reblogging spree or your energy is low, you do not have the time to make your dashboard suitable to guests, and a polite visit just isn’t in the cards. Potato understands this, and doesn’t get upset, or gods forbid, throws a tantrum and wishes ill on your household. Instead, Potato merely stores away their blessings for a later visit and leaves as a good friend should.
