Hereee *hands you doodles of zagreus with a jockstrap* the faces are off cause the heads are too small but anyhow, have it
Hi! I saw you have DNI for both anti and pro shippers in your bio and I'm just kinda confused. Is there a third option? Do you just mean you don't want any shippers at all of anything interacting or just anyone with any strong opinions on ship discourse interacting? Or something else?
I already answered this question in another ask, but lemme try to explain it a bit better:
The DNI thing stems from the fact that, from what I know and from how I've seen others use it, anti and pro are on the two extremes of the "fiction affects reality" spectrum, which is exactly why I don't fuck with either of them. There needs to be a middle ground between "fiction never impacts reality in any way whatsoever" and "fiction and reality are exactly the same with no nuance". When we get into the whole discourse about whether or not it's okay to ship something that's problematic because it's fictional, we need to take into account how the problematic aspects are being portrayed, because liking something problematic in fiction is not bad in and of itself. The problem starts when people think it's okay to fetishize stuff like rape, pedophilia, incest and abuse just because it's fictional and therefore "doesn't affect reality"
The way you talk about this stuff matters. There's a reason for why we criticize how sensitive topics are depicted in fiction, because it does affect reality, in the sense that it affects the person who's reading or watching the story unfold, and it affects how we view the issue that's being represented through the characters. People should be held accountable for portraying these subjects insensitively and irresponsibly, but not inherently. This is why I'm way more wary of proshippers than antishippers, because those bitches will take any excuse they can get to justify their use of trauma as porn categories just so they don't have to be held accountable for their weird behavior. And a lot of the time, "antis" are really just regular people who don't like seeing this stuff and get immediately labeled as anti for voicing that (if they don't get called fascist or pro-censorship, that is). And that's not even getting into the issue of how proshipping helps to create online spaces that glorify abuse scenarios, which raises some moral and ethical questions that I don't feel like getting into right now, but I don't think I need to explain why this shit is bad
To wrap this whole thing up, I also just wanted to say that I think the fact we even have categories such as "pro" and "anti" is so fucking dumb. Just call out weirdos who are into pedo fanfiction and tell off people who hate shipping because they think it's cringe or whatever, like in the good ol' days before fandoms learned to use therapy speak to make it seem like they know what they're talking about
I really love the way that you put this and honestly i get it. I barely see proshippers making these excuses but i dont know if im even looking or paying attention enough to see that. I'm pretty sure i have proship on my bio (dont remember) but in my case i was sexually assaulted as a teen and, like a lot of people, fanfics and fanarts and other media containing these topics became a "coping mechanism" (or a like guilty kink, idk if its actually considered a coping mechanism), and sometimes i assume that the artist, like me, they make that type of art to cope themselves. In this case ive always considered that they werent trying to play those off as "just fiction that doesnt impact reality and so its fine" because they know the problem and trauma personally. But then again, i mightve been sometimes assuming that they create as a way to cope.
Im not here saying youre wrong lemme just be clear, on the contrary, you kinda opened my eyes more to the fact that while i was feeling guilty over enjoying these topics in fiction (depending a lot on how they are portrayed, i prefer the loving and caring types but thats irrelevant rn) and started being defensive over proshippers as a whole, assuming that they were like me in the why they like it and create it.
So anyways, i wondered how you view people that create and consume this content as a way to cope with their traumas and your general insights in this situation (dont need to respond if you dont feel like it)
I understand there are some people who have been victims of SA and the like who consume this type of content as a way to cope with their own trauma, and I do not judge them for it. Everyone has their coping mechanisms, and I don't think it's my place to dictate how someone should deal with their issues. However, that does not change the fact that many proshippers have been criticized by victims for the fetishization of their struggles, and in these situations their only response is to say "but some victims say that it's okay", completely disregarding the person's feelings and thoughts on the matter so they can continue to make their fetish content without a care in the world
And, again, there's also the issue of creating online spaces for people who make and consume content that fetishizes abuse without being held accountable for any of it. This is going to inevitably invite people who are genuinely into that type of stuff into those spaces, and not victims who use it as a form of comfort, and then you'll just end up having a safe space for abusers and people who jerk off to abuse to engage in their own desires without feeling guilty about it, or even being encouraged to do so by others in that same space
