I really loved the dynamic between Niragi, Chishiya, and Arisu especially since I always find it fascinating to observe how people who come from similar backgrounds can find themselves led astray to entirely different paths than one another.
First, you have Niragi who was bullied during his adolescence (also he probably didn't have that good of a home life considering the fact that the bullying persisted his entire life and no one ever stepped in to stop it or get him help). Because of this, upon arriving to the Borderlands, he chooses to lead a life of malice and cruelty with no regard for the lives of others since he believes: "No one cared about me so I'm going to be a menace to humanity."
Then you have Chishiya who was emotionally neglected by his parents and lived a life void of the love and care that are essential for full human potential. His parents value him for performance rather than him as their son, as a human being, and even then, he isn't given affection despite the fact that he worked hard to get in the medical field like his father, hoping to achieve the approval and affection that he's lacked of his entire life. Due to this, he leads a life void of sympathy and compassion for others since he believes: "No one cared about me so I'm not going to care about anyone."
Finally, you have Arisu who was verbally and emotionally abused by his father his entire life. He too has lived a life void of affection and filled with harm at the hands of someone who should have been there for him and nourished him. However, it's obvious that his outcome of a character greatly contrasted that of both Niragi and Chishiya. He has chosen a path of benevolence despite the fact that benevolence is something he himself is more foreign to than others. Because of the lack of kindness in his own life he believes: "No one cared about me so I'm going to care about everyone."
Niragi represents the cruelty that can emit from trauma.
Chishiya represents the indifference that can emit from trauma.
Arisu represents the leniency that can emit from trauma.
All three of their characters represent a greater truth and that truth is that regardless of what we have endured, we always have the ability to choose how our roles as humans cultivate. By being maleficent or apathetic, not much change can ever be brought forward for oneself or the world around them, but by being soft-hearted and caring in spite of the wickedness bestowed upon your experience as a human being, an improved quality of life is possible.
Arisu is evidence of this because if it had not been for his strength and courage to be kind when everything he had gone through told him not to be, he and nearly everyone else he had met in the Borderlands would have most likely died.
“These events are so boring, aren’t they?” you asked the moment a young man stepped over to you with a glass in his hand. It was only when you looked up that you realized who it was, that it was finally someone you actually cared about. “It’s been a while.”
Han-seo let out a laugh. “You’re the one who ghosted me, I’ve been trying to call you.”
Awkwardly taking a sip of your own glass of champagne, you thought about the past few days. He was right, you’d been ignoring him. “Gosh, I’m sorry. I’m working on this new prototype, and between this and meetings, I don’t have time for dates. But I’ll make it up to you, I promise,” you said, taking his hand and intertwining your fingers with his.
“Why don’t you let others work on it?”
“Because this project is my baby, I don’t want others to take credit.”
Shaking his head with a smile, he finally sneaked an arm around your waist. “It’s your company, don’t let them. But all right, I know you better than to argue about things like that.” He leaned down to kiss you gently and you quickly melted into his embrace because you really missed this feeling of warmth. It didn’t even matter that you weren’t alone. “Why don’t we leave early?” he whispered.
“I can’t. Apparently, we won some award and I have to stay to give an acceptance speech,” you said tiredly. “I’m not even having fun, and they managed to make this even worse. I mean, I’m glad that at least you’re here.”
He remained silent as he looked into your eyes. It wasn’t hard to tell he was thinking about something to make you feel better, an act of kindness like getting you something sweet to eat, or maybe an escape plan he could offer. “All right, how about you coming home with me? We could have fun on our own later,” he added with a boyish smile.
“I can’t deny that it’s tempting,” you told him hesitantly.
“Then what’s the problem?”
“I wanted to go back to the lab after this.”
Han-seo rolled his eyes at you. “Can’t it wait? It’s just one night. Let’s say you’re making up for the cancelled dates. What do you say?”
It was hard to say no to him. Hell, it was impossible to say no. Letting out a sigh of defeat, you eventually nodded. “Sure, it’s just one night after all. And I’m close to the finish line anyway.” Now that you said it out loud, you realized how bad it came out. “Shit, I’m sorry. I sound like a real bitch, and as if I didn’t care about you at all.”
“I know how this brain of yours works,” he said with a short laugh as he poked your forehead with his fingertip. “You didn’t want to sound mean, this is all that matters.” Someone in the background began to call your name but it was him who noticed it first. “You’re popular tonight.”
“Huh?” You turned around and saw a familiar woman approach you, waving constantly while she got closer. Forcing a smile on your face, you nodded to stop her from getting any closer then turned back to Han-seo. “I guess I gotta go now. Wish me luck.”
Instead of saying good luck, he simply kissed you again, this time not holding himself back. If that was only up to you, you wouldn’t have left him there, but the next part of the event was just about to begin and you had to go on the stage. That woman even walked over to you and patted you on the shoulder to get your attention and remind you that it was time to go. At least he didn’t seem disappointed. If anything, he looked proud of you.
Flashing a small smile at him, you said, “I love you.”
This made him freeze and it was his turn to be confused. “Huh? You do?”
You glanced up from your plate with a surprised look. “Me? Why? What makes you thing that?”
Leaning back in the chair, Han-seo smiled at you. “You’re usually not this quiet,” he explained, taking a good look at you. “You can tell me if you feel like talking about it.”
“Nothing’s bothering me, I just have a lot on my mind right now. Mr. Lee and I will meet Babel’s lawyers this afternoon, and just between us, I’m kind of afraid to see what skeletons will fall out of the closet,” you told him as you stretched your arms above your head.
He cleared his throat. “Will they tell you everything?”
“We both signed and NDA when we joined the company, so hopefully they will. That’s the only way we can properly prepare.” You took the last bite of your lunch and looked down at your private phone, searching for something. Once you found the picture you were looking for, you showed it to him. “On a lighter note, I’d be happy if you agreed to meet this friend of mine. I think you would be cute together.”
Shaking his head, Han-seo let out a sigh. “You know it’s complicated. But she really looks nice.” You knew there was more so you patiently waited for him to go on. It had taken him a minute or two, but eventually he said, “Look, I appreciate that you’re trying to set me up with someone, but it’s time to stop playing the matchmaker. It would be better for everyone.”
There it was again, that strange look in his eyes that you couldn’t quite decode yet. It was like guilt, but why would he feel guilty? “I know you and you need to spend more time around people. Being the Chairman of this company doesn’t mean you have to isolate yourself. It’s quite the opposite, actually. Socialize. Meet new people. Try to do something fun for once.”
Suddenly your phone began to beep next to you.
“You have to go?” he asked with an understanding smile.
“Yeah, I don’t wanna be late.”
When you stood up, Han-seo stood up as well. “See you next week, then?” You nodded. “Good luck for the meeting.”
As you took a good look at him, you realized he knew something. Something bad. Damn it, how bad could it be? But you didn’t want to pressure him into giving you a preview so you just said, “Thank you. And go out. Be around people. I’m serious.”
Rolling his eyes, he only waved you to leave the meeting room already. With a cheeky grin, you quickly did as you were told and headed back to your office. Mr. Lee was already waiting for you there, although he didn’t look like he was about to rush you. If anything, he looked curious.
You quickly glanced down at your watch. You still had five minutes until you were supposed to leave so why was he waiting there? “I thought I had more time, I’m sorry,” you said nonetheless.
“We still have some time, don’t worry,” he said as he followed you inside the office. “I wanted to talk to you about something else, actually. Do you think regularly having lunch with the Chairman is a good idea? People will talk.”
“We’ve been friends since high school, let them talk. He didn’t even know I applied for a job here, I only told him on my first day,” you explained calmly while you put your laptop in your bag.
He let out a sigh. “All right, it’s your choice. I’m just a little concerned, that’s all. Be careful. Anyway, it’s time to go if we don’t want to be late.”
The trip to the law firm passed in silence which you didn’t mind this time. All you could think about was your boss’ warning back in the office. Was it really that bad? It was only lunch and you were nothing more but friends. Sure, from the outside some people might see it the wrong way if they don’t know the background, thinking you were just trying to climb the ladder this way.
It was a tough decision to make because you liked these lunches and you knew Han-seo also needed a real friend in the office. If you decided to cancel this regular event, he might assume you’re trying to shut him out. But this wasn’t something you could decide so soon so you focused on the meeting ahead instead.
In the office a receptionist called for someone, and soon a guy around your age showed up with a goofy smile on his face. “Welcome to Wusang. My name is Jang Joon-woo and I will guide you to the meeting. Follow me, please.”
While the two of you followed him, Mr. Lee cleared his throat. “Why do I have a feeling this is going to be interesting?”
“And not in the positive sense of the word,” you added with a groan.
Inside Han Seung-hyuk’s office you were greeted with a warm welcome along with yet another NDA to sign. When you pointed out you already signed one at Babel, the other lawyer, Hong Cha-young informed you that this is between you and the law firm, not Babel. Hesitantly, but you both signed it just to finally begin the meeting.
And this is when the fun began—one skeleton came after another, and when they told you they would send a memo with all the things you’d just heard, you began to zone out. If just half of these things were true, you were in trouble. All it needed was one person to open their mouth and talk to the press, and even if they could cover it up somehow, Babel’s reputation would be already damaged and it couldn’t be fixed that easily.
Then, out of the corner of your eye, you noticed that their intern kept watching you with a weird look. At first you didn’t care, but then it began to bother you. A lot. Why was he looking? Why couldn’t he focus on someone else? Or something else? Anything other than you. But he didn’t give up so you flashed an awkward smile at him then turned your attention back to the meeting, hoping he would just give up.
An hour later you were back in the car, but you didn’t leave the parking lot, you just sat there and tried to process what you’d just heard. It was an overwhelming amount of information that filled you with anxiety. It was like a landmine—Babel stepped on it and Wusang was constantly working on keeping it from exploding. And you? You were the collateral damage in case it exploded.
“We heard way too much today, if just one thing gets out, it’s a PR disaster for us,” Mr. Lee suddenly spoke up. “But I still think they didn’t tell us everything. We need another source too.”
“Who?”
“That intern seems to like you,” he said as he looked at you. “This can come in handy.”
He was right, you needed a source, but this had to be a mistake. “Wait, what, you want me to flirt with him?” you asked just to clarify.
“Why not? You can't even say he's ugly.”
“Yeah, he’s not, but—”
“Just think about what’s ahead of us,” he interrupted you. “We need to make sure they don’t keep things from us. And maybe you shouldn’t cancel those lunches after all. We might need some help from above.”

Horrifying screams of agony fill up the room to the brim, and despite his love for the new world order, Last Boss wants it all to stop. He can smell the metallic pungency of blood—so strong that he can taste it on his tongue when it nervously swipes over his bottom lip. He wishes he could turn back time and deter you from joining the game.
“I told you not to get attached.” Just hearing Niragi’s voice makes his hands tremble in fear.
Takatora doesn’t dare to acknowledge him, his eyes solely focused on your face, on the eyes that always stared at him with nothing but pure love, on the lips that he loved to trace with his fingertips after every kiss you gifted him with. But now your eyes are staring into space lifelessly, no adoration left in them for Tora to hold on to. The corners of your mouth are cut, angry red wounds still leaking blood stretched all the way to your cheekbones and messily sewed shut.
“Tora…” It’s a one word, a whisper that barely reaches his ears, but it makes a tiny spark of hope bloom in his heart. You’re not dead, and you still remember his name.
Even Niragi is left speechless, forced to look you up and down several times before his eyes recognize you. You aren’t dead after all, but he has a feeling that you wish you were.
Both men had never seen such a gruesome result of a game. Niragi wants to ask you how it all happened—he’s more than curious to know how a game of Hearts turned into this bloody scene—but he’s not sure if you are in any condition to speak properly, so he leaves you be for now.
Last Boss is quick on his feet, reaching you in what seems to be milliseconds. You want to greet him with a smile, but there is no point in doing so; your lips are already stuck in a permanent grin. He sits on his knees in front of you, and you slump further down the wall, trying to hide from him.
“You’re alive,” he whispers, hands already tangling in the hair on the back of your head so he can hold you still while his lips cover every inch of your face—his kisses as delicate as butterfly’s flutters.
Your eyes close involuntarily when he brushes one of the wounds on your cheeks, not because it hurts but because you are aware of how disgusting they must look. There is no way that he isn’t disgusted by them, you think.
The screams in the room slowly fade away, and you look to the left to see the man that helped you take care of your injuries slide down the wall, taking his final breath. You avert your eyes and meet Takatora’s gaze. You’re surprised to see the same amount of love and adoration in his eyes; it hasn’t changed a bit since he saw your ugly wounds.
Niragi breaks the silence. “You look kinda cool now.”
You guess that this half-assed comment is meant to reassure you in some way. You do feel a little bit better; just the thought that he said something like that to buck you up makes your eyes water in appreciation. You send a teasing wink Niragi’s way, making him scuff and cross his arms over his chest.
“Let’s get out of here already,” the black-haired man says before he turns away to walk out of the office room. “It seriously stinks here,” he murmurs under his breath when another whiff of the strong metallic smell hits his nose, and then the door clicks shut behind his back.
You turn your attention back to Last Boss, who hasn’t stopped staring at you for even a second. “Are you alright?” you ask him, daring to brush your nose against his to break him out of his thoughts.
He hums quietly and lets you leave a soft peck on his tattooed cheek, eyes closing in pure bliss. “I love you,” he mumbles out, and your eyes widen at his words.
“I love you too, Tora.”
He kisses you on the lips gently, careful not to hurt you before his arms find their way under your knees and your back, and he lifts you off of the dirty floor, making you gasp in agony, but when his mouth finds yours again, the kiss melts the pain away.
I can just imagine reader snapping of the excess parts of the honeycomb cookie no giving a shit at all (it’s a circle btw) and everyone is just like “what the fuck are you doing bitch you gonna get yourself killed” and she doesn’t give a fuck and is like “it’s a circle I’ve done this before” and is the first to win that game.
