The Mandela Effect makes me so angry because it's so stupid but it also reflects the way some people in the first world see the rest of the world. Nelson Mandela was not like, some actor, he was one of the greatest political leaders of the 20th century, the father of the modern nation of South Africa, a key if not the key person to bring down apartheid which was one of the greatest crimes against humanity of the century. A South Africa and indeed a world without Nelson Mandela would be very different, we're talking about 58 million people who would still live under an oppressive racist regime or a devastating civil war; this was all avoided thanks to the tireless effort of Mandela and others to create modern South Africa. If you ever picked up a newspaper or watched the news or watched the 2010 World Cup, you MUST have at least heard of him.

And then some dumb pseudoscience "paranormal researcher" doesn't remember him and says that's proof of parallel dimensions and the whole internet takes it as a meme, and the other examples, together with a political leader spoken about in the same tone as Ghandi or Martin Luther King, are a children's book and Pikachu's tail. Just say you're a fucking dumbass who lives in a bubble and doesn't pay any attention to the world around you, it would be less embarrassing. Fucking hell.

Just to be clear, the original "Mandela Effect" thing was not about false memories (those are called 'false memories' and it happens because humans are dumb) but a "paranormal researcher" who thought Mandela died in prison in the 80s and was surprised to see he actually died in 2013. So one of the explanations she gave was that she came from a parallel dimension where Mandela did die, and her proof was that so many other (dumb) people had similar memories, most likely mistaking Mandela by other anti-apartheid leaders.

Apparently, the fact that one of the world's most important leaders died or not had absolutely no effect whatsoever beyond confusing this single dumbass lady. The entire nation of South Africa with its millions of people might as well have been in civil war, still under apartheid, or taking a completely different course, but who cares, right? That's in like, Africa.

yes. my answer was no before bc the former CEO of twitter who also sucked, jack dorsey, was on the board, but he left as of may 2024, and things have gotten a lot better. also a lot of japanese and korean artists have joined

don't delete your twitter. lock your account, use a service to delete all your tweets, delete the app off of your phone, and keep your account/handle so you can't be impersonated.

get a bluesky with the same handle, even if you won't use it, also so you won't be impersonated.

get the sky follower bridge extension for chrome or firefox. you can find everyone you follow on twitter AND everyone you blocked so you don't have to start fresh: https://skyfollowerbridge.com/

learn how to use its moderation tools (labelers, block lists, NSFW settings) so you can immediately cut out the grifters, fascists, t*rfs, AI freaks, have the NSFW content you want to see if you so choose, and moderate for triggers. here's a helpful thread with a lot of tools.

the bluesky phone app is pretty good, but there is also tweetdeck for bluesky, called https://deck.blue/ on desktop, if you miss tweetdeck.

bluesky has explicitly stated they do not use your data to train generative AI, which is nice to hear from an up and coming startup. obviously we can’t trust these companies and please use nightshade and glaze, but it’s good to hear.

As a Bluesky elder (derogatory) (no you will not find me), it's important that you all know several other things about Bluesky.

We collectively bullied Jack Dorsey off the site because he was upset that we wanted moderation tools to limit racism, transphobia, etc. Now the moderation tools are powerful and we use them extensively. There have been bumps along the way, but... lol. lmao, even

The site has long been run by strange transgender people over 30. The user base expands, but they are the heart of it. More websites, organizations, systems of government, and other things of that nature should be organized thusly.

The first and most famous meme on the site was a sexy picture of Alf whose hog everybody wanted to see. When people say Alf Hog, this is what they're referring to. Multiple sitting congressional representatives are explicitly aware of Alf Hog.
