We called in a guitar player, and Michael sang every note of every chord to him. “here’s the first chord first note, second note, third note. Here’s the second chord first note, second note, third note”, etc., etc. We then witnessed him giving the most heartfelt and profound vocal performance, live in the control room through an SM57. He would sing us an entire string arrangement, every part. Steve Porcaro once told me he witnessed MJ doing that with the string section in the room. Had it all in his head, harmony and everything. Not just little eight bar loop ideas. he would actually sing the entire arrangement into a micro-cassette recorder complete with stops and fills.”

fun fact: When you break things with your hands like that you have t break your fingers on purpose before so that they heal stronger. So basically this woman is so badass she broke her hands just to do this.

BODY APPRECIATION DOESN’T HAVE TO CENTER AROUND HOW IT LOOKS

I used to assume that body appreciation only meant that I would accept and come to terms with how my body looks, which I kind of did. I mean, I wasn’t crazy in love with my body, but I didn’t hate the way it looked.

Then, I got a shin splint for almost six weeks (It’s when intense exercise causes the tendons in the calf to rub against the bones and become irritated. In extreme cases, fibers may start ripping.) I had to skip out on the rest of the basketball season, and watching my teammates play from where I was sitting on the bench made me (1) immensely jealous and (2) realize how much my legs do for me.

Simple tasks like walking suddenly became incredibly tiring, not to mention I was not even half as fast as I was without the shin splint. Jumping, running, dancing, all became difficult or impossible. All I wanted was for my calf to heal and to get up and running again.

After that experience, I fell in love with my body, not for what it looks like, but for what it does for me. My body lets me walk, run, shoot baskets, and turn my abstract thoughts into text that you can read, with the help of your eyes. My point is, your body is the reason you’ve made it this far and how you’ve made your accomplishments. Even if it wasn’t a physically intense action, like drawing or writing, your body was the vehicle for your thoughts, and that’s why I love my body so much.

Don’t interpret this wrongly; I don’t mean to downplay acceptance of the way your body looks. That is so important as well. I’m just saying there’s more than one way to learn to love your body.
