"Don't lie to people" is all very good until u remember how funny it is to give the wrong birthday to an astrology person and have them go "that explains so much abt you
worried that thing you put in your art or writing or game or music is too self-indulgent, too self-referential, too niche for anyone but yourself? fear not! you can do whatever you want forever. and you should.
itās kinda fucked up that youāre only an age for a year. I didnāt know how to be 23 yet, let me try again
Iām going to think about this foreverā¦
tumblr night shift is crazy everyones ready to die or ready to fuck
Back in my day we called it nightblogging and we blamed the Australians
reminder that 30 isnāt old, itās very normal to not accomplish everything in your 20s, and that it is never too late to learn that thing youāve always wanted to learn. youāre always growing. thatās a good thing.Ā
Who the hell accomplishes everything in their 20s? Who made that a thing?
I was 48 when I started my apprenticeship to become a tattoo artist. I was 50 when I married the love of my life.
Youāve got time.
I needed this right now. Iāve got time!!!
To anyone who needs to hear this, my aunt called my mom last year in tears and, as she talked about how things are going, she admitted that she didnāt know she could be so happy, and she didnāt know how good life could be.
She is 72. After a very rough go of things, she is now with someone who cherishes her (met him three years ago!), goes on bucket-list road trips multiple times a year, founded two nonprofits to help people who have been through similar struggles, and feels fulfilled.
30 isnāt too late. Neither is 40, nor 50, nor even 70.
when I was in college in the 1990s I took a document design course and we had to go talk to an archivist at the university library
the library had a single page from a gutenberg bible (the bible had been damaged by fire and the remaining undamaged pieces cut apart and sold) and a CD sitting next to each other
we looked at the bible page, marveling at this 500+ year old page with its neatly set type, carefully kept under a sheet of glass to protect it
and then she held up the CD and pointed out that in 500 years, if a CD could even last that long, it was unlikely we'd possess the technology to read it
and we all got very quiet and look at the book page for a long time
and is evidenced by the fact I'm telling you about this almost 30 years later, I have never forgotten that blank-looking shiny piece of plastic sitting next to a beautiful, ancient piece of paper that someone pressed words into with a machine and left for me to read, hundreds of years before I was born.
not to be a nerd but itās so crazy how he (Bernini) really did that from cold hard stoneā¦ā¦. truly a spectacle, truly breathtaking, an honor to behold
I think you should know he was 23 when he finished this and the ass gets a lot of attention but the hand on Persepinaās side/tummy is also exquisite
before i saw the caption I knew that HAD to be bernini.
I try not to make sweeping statements but I think thereās a case to be made for bernini as the greater sculptor thereās ever been.
hereās his bust of costanza bonarelli
hereās apollo and daphne from the front, where sheās mostly human
from the back, where sheās mostly tree
and details
this is the one art form I genuinely just cannot get my brain to accept as real. Iāve watched sped-up videos of it being done, read about it, seen in-progress marble statues and I still just canāt get it to sink in or stick. My mind doesnāt want to believe that any person has ever been able to start with a big block and break little bits off of it until it looks like a finely detailed person. At some point it has no recognizable shape and they still know where and how deep they should take a chip out of it thatāll still be the right decision 50,000 fucking chips later?!?
The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa has a hidden skylight for gold rays of actual light to shine down on their expressions and clothes and clouds.
On my first day in Germany I got to my hotel and I couldn't get the lights to turn on. And I was like "Eh, fuck it, I'll just take a shower in the dark." And then the shower wouldn't get hot. I waited and waited and it stayed ice cold.
So I go down to the front desk and I'm like "My lights won't turn on and my shower won't get hot" so they send this guy up with me. We get into the room and I flick the switch and nothing happens so I'm like "See?"
And he goes "You must put your card in the slot."
"I... what? I have to put my room card in the light switch?"
"Of course!"
Now I have been in many hotels in the US and never encountered this concept, but apparently it was something most of their guests already knew. So I'm looking like a fool at this point. I feel like an idiot. The dude is fully grinning at me. I put the card in the slot and voila, the light turns on.
Then he's like "Ok, let's see if the shower works. You know you must wait for the hot water?" and I just know he's thinking I'm an idiot who also can't use a shower. This stupid American can't wait for the hot water! She can't even use a light switch or a shower!
And I guess he was distracted by these thoughts of my stupidity, because this dude fully stepped into the shower. In his nice dress shirt and slacks. He just. Gets into the shower.
And turns it on.
Have you ever seen a playing field get leveled instantaneously
Had a friend in middle school going through a breakup ask me "why do people say they'll love you forever if they don't mean it?" and I said something like "I think people mean it when they say it, but then people change" but all I was thinking was "girl we're in 8th grade"
worried that thing you put in your art or writing or game or music is too self-indulgent, too self-referential, too niche for anyone but yourself? fear not! you can do whatever you want forever. and you should.
feels like i hallucinated this entire year
