Abbot and Robby are equals, said Hatosy. “I’m coming in, and I have this calming presence. When you’re looking at these two competent physicians, there’s really nothing they can’t handle. Give them a resuscitative hysterectomy or anything, they can handle it, but when it comes to their mental health, they have a hard time,” he continued. “They’re incompetent, and it speaks so much to the challenges that the attendings face and how much they’re carrying and how hard it is to say to anybody, ‘I need help.’ But they can say it to each other. Abbot, who is hands-on and good at fixing things, is looking at a guy who is in survival mode, and he is unable to diagnose him and fix him. What he can do is offer perspective as somebody who has stood in his shoes, and sometimes just knowing that somebody sees and hears you is enough.”
