"You could get up early and do it before work" I could also wait for a magic beanstalk to start growing in my living room LMAO. Let's focus on things that happen in the real world
Henry having 2 extremely suicidal mothers is hilarious in the context of the show because they are always trying to martyr themselves and Henry gotta be like hey no let’s actually not do that let’s go to granny’s
Here's a map of the original names of Palestinian cities before its colonization.
Why does it matter to know this? Because changing the names as part of colonialism is not new in history.
Learning about the history of colonialism and imperialism is important. When we say educate yourself on these matters, it's because you need to learn to recognize patterns and prevent them from reoccurring.
The idea of the West being civilized is all a sham. The idea of Arabs being terrorists is a mere lie similar to the endless lies that have been told about Native Americans and many other indigenous groups.
If you're going to use the word 'terrorist', it's about time you use it on the real enemy.
Free Palestine.
Do you idiots really think that Jerusalem, which existed before Islam, and before the arab conquest of the levant in the 7th century, was originally named Al Quds?
The historic revisionism is astounding. I say this as a historian.
10,000 people couldn't be bothered to do a lick of research so I guess I'll do it for them
Akka wasn't built as a Palestinian city. It isn't even Arabic. It was first recorded in that pronunciation between 1800-1500 BCE (Old Arabic first emerged around 100 CE, almost 2000 years later). The word itself is not Semitic in origin
the city is not called Ahilud, it's Ahihud
Netanya is not Umm Khalid, it's about a kilometer to the west
Tel Aviv is not Jaffa. It was built in 1917 and incorporated Jaffa in 1950, starting with the Jewish quarter in 1948. Jaffa was also not built as a Palestinian city. It was built in ancient Canaan and was ruled by the Canaanites, the Egyptians, the Philistines, the Israelites, the Assyrians, the Babylonians, the Persians, the Phoenicians, the Ptolemies, the Seleucids, the Hasmoneans, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Islamic Caliphates, the Crusaders, the Ayyubids, the Mamluks, the Ottomans, and finally the British, before Israel was established. It was called Yafo by the ancient Israelites, and that names carries on today
Al-Lydd was not built as a Palestinian city. It has history stretching back to the Neolithic Period. It was called Lod by the ancient Israelites. It was a Jewish center during the Roman occupation. It was called "Al-Ludd" 600 years later when it was conquered by Muslims, then St. Jeorge de Lidde by the Crusaders 400 years after that, then Lydda by the Mamluks, until it was renamed Lod by Israelis
Ashkelon is built near Ascalon, which was an ancient Canaanite seaport, and was destroyed in 1270. Ascalon was populated in the Bronze Age by the Philistines, an ancient group of invaders and pillagers. Askalan is the Arabic name for the ancient site
Zekharia was founded as Beit Zekharia, a Jewish city during the Roman occupation. It is named after the Jewish prophet of the same name. It was renamed Zakariyya by Mamluk conquerors
Modern Be'er Sheva was established by the Ottomans in the start of the 20th century. It is near the ancient city of Be'er Sheva, which was founded by the ancient Israelites.
Umm al-Rashrash was not a Palestinian city. It was a police station consisting of five clay huts
Jerusalem was founded as Jerusalem (Urusalimum in Egyptian or Yerushalayim in Hebrew) in the Bronze Age. It was also called City of David and Zion. Al-Quds is a shortening of Madinat Al-Quds, the "city of the holy sanctuary", referring to the ancient Israelite Temple of Solomon, built around the 10th century BCE. It is similar to the name Ir HaKodesh, the "Holy City", an ancient Hebrew nickname for the city
and finally
the name Israel has been used to refer to the land since the Kingdom of Israel was established sometime in the 10th century BCE. The Roman Emperor Hadrian renamed the land Syria Palaestina after the Bar Kokhba revolt in 135 CE–more than 1000 years later–possibly as an insult to the Jewish population at the time. The British Mandate in Palestine takes its name from there
In short, almost all of these names are simply Arabic names for cities that already existed when Arabs conquered the land. Many of them are Arabic translations of Hebrew or Phoenician names. Both Arabic and Hebrew names are equally valid, as both groups have lived in proximity for thousands of years. Many Israeli cities are built on or in Palestinian cities that were ethnically cleansed during the Nakba (such as Kiryat Shmona). That's something worth talking about. Lying about history isn't
Further things:
Jaffa is A DIFFERENT FUCKING CITY FROM TEL AVIV. It's still around by the way. You may notice this if you looked at Google Maps:
Must've been ethnically cleansed. Surely there aren't any Muslims there anym--oh.
Also the word "Yaffa" is derived from...er...Hebrew.
Palestine: Excellent point; here's a map of historic Palestine, not in English because no one seems to have bothered to translate it, alas:
Jafa! Hey! I know that place!
...Wait a second.
Anyway, where does "Palestine" come from? Surely this isn't the right map. Must be a mix-up.
To Etymonline!
To Philistine (it's what they link to)!
Hmm.
I'm afraid that is what is pictured in the map. Lovely place, I've heard. So who were these Philistines?
Oh.
What about Jews?
So Palestinians are named after Europeans...and they call us the Europeans?
Gee.
Let's look at Josephus for other original names. He lived about 2,000 years ago, so rather closer.
Here he is quoting a Roman, with bolding mine:
It is also our pleasure that the city Joppa, which the Jews had originally, when they made a league of friendship with the Romans, shall belong to them, as it formerly did; and that Hyrcanus, the son of Alexander, and his sons, have as tribute of that city from those that occupy the land for the country, and for what they export every year to Sidon, twenty thousand six hundred and seventy-five modii every year, the seventh year, which they call the Sabbatic year, excepted, whereon they neither plough, nor receive the product of their trees. It is also the pleasure of the senate, that as to the villages which are in the great plain, which Hyrcanus and his forefathers formerly possessed, Hyrcanus and the Jews have them with the same privileges with which they formerly had them also; and that the same original ordinances remain still in force which concern the Jews with regard to their high priests; and that they enjoy the same benefits which they have had formerly by the concession of the people, and of the senate; and let them enjoy the like privileges in Lydda.
So more evidence for Jaffa's Jewish origin; and Lydda seems likely to be Lod/Al-Lydd. Keep in mind though that these were Romanized names--thus Joppa and not the Hebrew.
Here he is quoting an antisemite:
The people of the Jews being leprous and scabby, and subject to certain other kinds of distempers, in the days of Bocchoris, king of Egypt, they fled to the temples, and got their food there by begging: and as the numbers were very great that were fallen under these diseases, there arose a scarcity in Egypt. Hereupon Bocehoris, the king of Egypt, sent some to consult the oracle...about his scarcity. The god's answer was this, that he must purge his temples of impure and impious men, by expelling them out of those temples into desert places; but as to the scabby and leprous people, he must drown them, and purge his temples, the sun having an indignation at these men being suffered to live; and by this means the land will bring forth its fruits. Upon Bocchoris's having received these oracles, he called for their priests, and the attendants upon their altars, and ordered them to make a collection of the impure people, and to deliver them to the soldiers, to carry them away into the desert; but to take the leprous people, and wrap them in sheets of lead, and let them down into the sea. Hereupon the scabby and leprous people were drowned, and the rest were gotten together, and sent into desert places, in order to be exposed to destruction. In this case they assembled themselves together, and took counsel what they should do, and determined that, as the night was coming on, they should kindle fires and lamps, and keep watch; that they also should fast the next night, and propitiate the gods, in order to obtain deliverance from them. That on the next day there was one Moses, who advised them that they should venture upon a journey, and go along one road till they should come to places fit for habitation: that he charged them to have no kind regards for any man, nor give good counsel to any, but always to advise them for the worst; and to overturn all those temples and altars of the gods they should meet with: that the rest commended what he had said with one consent, and did what they had resolved on, and so traveled over the desert. But that the difficulties of the journey being over, they came to a country inhabited, and that there they abused the men, and plundered and burnt their temples; and then came into that land which is called Judea, and there they built a city, and dwelt therein, and that their city was named Hierosyla, from this their robbing of the temples; but that still, upon the success they had afterwards, they in time changed its denomination, that it might not be a reproach to them, and called the city Hierosolyma, and themselves Hierosolymites
Hierosolyma is pretty clearly "Jerusalem", not "al-Quds".
By the way, there's an interesting Exodus parallel here, but that's not the point.
And so on and so forth.
@la7ma-mafrooma, do you have any comments on the various debunkings in this thread?
Thanks, @edithsweetith
