summer means summer jobs, and that means a lot of students newly working in the food industry. be it starbucks, mcdonalds, or a local restaurant: do NOT mess with people’s food. giving someone milk when they ask for soy could kill them. giving someone meat when they ask for vegetarian could kill them. giving someone caffeine when they ask for none could kill them. people have deathly allergies and painful reactions and I have absolutely 0 sympathy for anyone who purposely messes with people’s food orders. respect people’s orders regardless of what you think would be a funny “prank” and regardless of how specific someone’s food order is. even if you had a 4 day straight shift if someone orders something specific you either do it or tell them that you cannot.
sick and disabled people should not have to be afraid of being sent to the hospital every time they go out to eat but some of you folks in the food industry really go out of your way to make us feel unsafe.
PS: if someone asks for a straw you fucking give it to them. chances are, most disabled people do not “look” how you think disability is supposed to look and if you refuse someone a straw because you doubt their need for it you are an asshole. disabled people are now being harmed and humiliated by assholes who think they have the right to determine who and who is not “worthy” of a straw.
You might think you’re “teaching someone a lesson” or “they won’t know the difference” and your intentional attack could kill someone
or make them suffer horribly
so I don’t care how rude or stuck up you’ve decided they are
intentionally tampering with food is ethically manslaughter (Doing something you know might kill with a hope to cause harm or to kill) and if it could ever be proved (can’t happen) I would believe it should be charged as such in courts.
For fuck’s sake people, don’t mess with people’s orders.
If someone’s being an asshole and you want to mess with their coffee, just make it decaf /instead/ of caffeinated (unless they asked for decaf in which case please don’t switch it.) One cup of decaf isn’t gonna hurt anybody’s health but it will make their day worse!
wrong! absolutely wrong! do not mess with people’s food no matter what! it absolutely can hurt people! some people medicate with caffeine and will wind up sick without it, not to mention it might not even be for the person ordering! people can get awful migraines and other debilitating symptoms from suddenly not having enough caffeine, and who knows what else! this is exactly the attitude that leads to people getting hurt! and if anyone reading this thinks food revenge is a cool under any circumstances, do not work in food what the fuck
you do not know every condition on the planet. stop assuming something will not hurt people and how about just not fuck with people’s food
this is exactly what I was talking about
If somebody orders diet and you give them regular, you could cause their blood sugar to spike (insulin-dependent diabetics have to know what they’re eating and medication-dependent diabetics have to avoid a lot of sugar).
However, far too many people think it’s okay, especially if the person is a bit overweight, to give somebody diet when they ordered regular.
Aspartame, which is in almost all diet sodas, is a very common migraine trigger. It is actively poisonous to people with phenylketonuria, because they can’t properly process one of the ingredients. It also worsens the side effects of some schizophrenia medications.
If a “fattie” is asking for regular instead of diet and you give them diet you could make them very sick.
Just like the caffeine thing. You don’t ever mess with people’s food like that because you don’t know, you can’t know, and your job is to give people what they order.
I used to work as a waitress and we had this young kid one time who’s birthday it was. He had ordered a burger and when I returned with drinks his parents told me that he has a milk allergy and he gets sick because of eggs. I too have a milk allergy, so the kid and I had a quick chat on how stupid it sometimes was that we couldn’t drink a full glass of milk, but we could eat milk chocolate. Since sometimes milk allergies can get really specific. I continued my shift and not ten minutes in, I realized what he had ordered. A burger with a egg fried in to it. I can’t tell you how fast I walked to the kitchen, screaming that they needed to take the egg out. They were just preparing it, so I was on time. I walked back to the table and quickly told them what happened and the kid was super surprised I took the time to help him. When he went to the bathroom, I asked the parents what they wanted to do for dessert, since we then always bring out small fire works for someone’s birthday. All the deserts were made with milk or cream, so I asked them if he could handle Oreo cookies. He could eat about three and then he needed to stop, but he could. So I made a piramid out of Oreo cookies, while still helping my other 15 tables, put the fire work in the middle and with the entire staff walked up to his table. He was so super excited and happy and it was such a joy too see. After my shift, his dad came over to give me the secret money handshake and gave me a tip. I remember him saying something like: “Thank you for being so helpful. He had a great time!” Because to be honest, it doesn’t take a lot to make someone happy with food. I remember the one time I went to Starbucks and asked for something but I really hammered on the part that I needed soy milk in it. Other wise I would get sick. The lady literally gave me the cup and I asked again, just to be sure. She assured me it was with soy. Good to say I spend the entire afternoon I was supposed to spend with my grandma, being really sick. I’m scared now to go to Starbucks, since I just don’t want to get sick. So please people, make sure you just get orders right or just help people by checking in the kitchen if the food they want has something in it with their allergies. Food is for the soul, getting sick isn’t.
