TF85’ is nonsensical and the writers truly cannot grasp platonic love.
So we all agree this scene in S3 was definitely supposed to indicate that they barely spent time together before this right? It’s very clear that Max is shocked that El sought her out and wants to talk to her…and then we see very clearly that this is the beginning of their friendship
So did they spend the whole fall/winter together or not? Because it sure looks like it to me in TF85 and so this S3 scene makes absolutely no sense.
I get that they could have theoretically been more like acquaintances in the party before S3 but if that’s the argument the shows gonna make I will actually scream because this would mean that from Dec 84’ to roughly around July/Aug 85’ Max and El actually spent time together daily for 7-8 months but didn’t interact or become friends at all. Being the only girls within a group of less than 6 people? I only accepted this S3 friendship narrative because they left us with the impression El was still very much locked away in Hops cabin between S2-S3. and didn’t see Max much at all until summer.
And at this point they’ve made it clear that TF85’ isn’t just gonna retcon Mileven into something it never was. It seems they’re also gonna make Max’s whole character about Lucas. So I guess both girls spent everyday together for a whole winter and didn’t care about each other one bit until El started having boyfriend problems with Mike. How do you fail the Bechdel test OFF SCREEN?! That’s an unbelievably embarrassing accomplishment for the writers.
I guess they just exist around each other here wanting nothing to do with one another because grown men writers believe all these girls could ever possibly hope to need in life is their boyfriends (who believe they’re emotionally irrational creatures of a different species)
Less than a year after this El restarts Max’s heart and quite literally brings her back to life with the power of their love for one another because S3-S4 had women in the writers room.
Beyond the horrible representation of young girls, I also hate that this show only values ONE platonic relationship and treats it with any kind of respect and that’s Dustin and Steve. Everyone else we’re just kind of told are friends but they don’t show it. It wasn’t perfect but they did something right with the lessons of El and Max’s love for one another in S3-S4 and come S5 we got “you’re here…” and then El talking to Max like she’s completely irritated with her existence in the mindscape. When you pile on the fact that Max’s whole identity in S5 was also stripped down to strictly Lucas and I can’t even talk about El’s “Mike, you understand me better than anyone” I just can’t. I keep going in circles on this topic because it’s the same for Byler. So even if they didn’t want them to end up together, why have Mike and Will tell each other over and over ad nauseam that they’re “best friends” just to have them barely interact and once again force another plot line of “Mike is obsessed with El.” Now we have Lucas complaining about it. If you want your main couple to be well received stop making all of the other characters point out how dumb and annoying the relationship is.
