I knew it wasn't, this entire charade, my outburst, my still harbored feelings...
Steven felt just like her.
I began to cry.
Stars, I missed her so much.
And here she was. Her son, with the form she left him. He was saying the exact thing she would have.
His small form, clinging to me as if he were a new gem.
He practically was. And he held me like she would have.
I wanted to wail. I was trying so hard to hold it in.
Steven didn't need that.
He needed his Pearl. To teach him. To show him how to be a gem.
Even after!...I could see his face again and the horror and anguish threatened to suffocate me. He reached out for me, even when I made that face at him.
I should have been the one to pull him up, to catch him.
I could feel a warmth begin to settle in my heart.
But he caught it. Human tenacity was strong, but I couldn't imagine one catching themselves like he had.
This... boy. This mirror image of his mother.
He still thought I was great.
As the tears settled and the warmth bloomed, I knew.
He had to be protected, guided, loved, like I loved everything Rose created.
Because...
He was my everything now.
I wanted to describe how Pearl must have felt here, because this artist illuminates it perfectly.
Pearl was still here, while her leader and love lost was gone. The Pearl that started a rebellion against the very nature of what her purpose was meant to be since she had been created.
I could just imagine that in Pearl's mind, she saw the reflection of how Rose saw her as a fighting spirit, a warrior made out of her own foot forward and she strived everyday to show Steven that very same gem.
But after losing that most important person, did that warrior matter?
The moment Steven hugs her and tells her how he feels about her, one of the gems that raised him, did she not have the clearest answer?
Yes, for this wonderful little boy that Rose birthed and sacrificed herself for, with all of who Rose Quartz/ Pink Diamond was, his Pearl was great.
