Book Review: Ashes Through the Hourglass by Danny Lenihan - An Exciting Blend of Psychological Thriller & Speculative Sci-fi There are no good and bad choices, only choices. A mix of time travel and grief with elements of dark humour and psychological thriller. I appreciate the writing style and the effort that he puts into his craft. It has a good balance of being technical and geek about sci-fi and time travel and also being character-driven, deeply emotional and introspective.
10 Exciting Upcoming Books in May, 2026
From sci-fi, short stories to fantasy, horror, mystery and non-fiction. I'm curating this book list for a while now, and I still find books that I can add to it! I handpicked from publisher' newsletters, 'new book lists' from libraries and from Edelweiss. (Edelweiss is a digital market platform for booksellers but anyone can browse and have a look around with limited access.)
As of today, I have 34 titles in my bookshop/UK list for May. Which apart from completely newly published hardcovers it also contains paperback publications as well. As there are readers who are interested in some titles but do not want to commit to the hardcover version. It happens with me also. Sometimes, I'm not sure if I'm invested that much to buy as soon as it publishes, and I feel like I don't lose anything if I just wait for the softcover edition.Ā
I have found that I started to lean more towards paperbacks. Especially, well-made editions like theĀ Oxford World's Classics. I love it that I can fully open it - drawing 180 degrees - and nothing happens to the spine. No pages get loose, no gluing errors, no chunks of the book gets ejected into my face or to the floor. Not that it happens often, but you never know.Ā
So, circling back to the original theme of this post, I included softcover publications in the May list as well. Also, if you happen to jump over to my bookshop, you can find the lists for June and July. I love to look for exciting books, new titles and authors. The Lamb is the debut novel of the author, Lucy Rose. It is categorised as a folk horror but there could be some debate on that. Which just shows how hard it is to put a story in a box. It is so much more than just folk horror. It has elements of gore, coming-of-age, queer, feminine, it is also quite a bit meditative. It is a complex book, with a huge message, and importance that should be talked about in every book club at least once in its lifetime.
